These people are studying English. However, they are now facing some problems.
I am Pablo. I work 50 hours a week as a taxi driver, so I talk to people all day. They understand me, but I know I make a lot of mistakes. No one corrects me. My vocabulary is strong. Grammar is my problem. I'm trying to change little by little. For example, I don't use the past tense (时态). I always say, “I drive him to the office this morning” instead of “I drove him to the office this morning”.
My name is Maria Luisa. I'm teaching myself English, and I'm good at grammar. However, it's really difficult to find ways to practice English. I live in an area where everyone speaks my language. My neighbors and friends speak Spanish. I can speak Spanish in the supermarket and at the post office.
I am Li Ping. I understand the grammar and the readings in my class and I think my writing is good, but I'm very nervous when I speak English. I don't want to make any mistakes because I'm afraid people will think that I'm stupid. Also, my pronunciation isn't good. When I speak, people often say, “What Say that again”.
I am Yoshi. I have been in the United States for one year. I'm studying hard and I know grammar well, but the vocabulary is very difficult. When I listen, I don't understand many of the words. When I try to read, there are three or four new words in every sentence. I feel discouraged.
21.Who may say, “I go to bed late last night”
A.Pablo. B.Maria Luisa. C.Li Ping. D.Yoshi.

A.She can't pronounce words in English correctly. B.She speaks at a very fast speed.
C.Her grammar is terrible. D.Her voice is very low.
24.What can we learn about Yoshi
A.He was born in the United States. B.He has a very small vocabulary.
C.He has learned English for years. D.He is very good at listening.

Have you ever considered all the English expressions that include words about clothes Let's have a look.
People wear pants to cover the lower part of their bodies. We sometimes say that people who are nervous have ants in their pants. Sometimes, people may get caught with their pants down. They are found doing something they should not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes control. Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do. Then we say she wears the pants in the family.
Pants usually have pockets to hold things. Money that is likely to be spent quickly can burn a hole in your pocket. Sometimes you need a belt to hold up your pants. If you have less money than usual, you may have to tighten your belt.
I always praise people who can save their money and not spend too much. I really take my hat off to them. Yet, when it comes to my own money, I spend it at the drop of a hat, which means I instantly spend it.
Boots are a heavy or strong kind of shoes. People who are too big for their boots think they are more important than they really are. I dislike such people.
My father is an important person. He runs a big company. He wears a suit and tie, and a shirt with sleeves that cover his arms. Some people who do not know him well think he is too serious and never shows his feelings openly. But I know that my father wears his heart on his sleeve.
25.Which of the following expressions can show someone is nervous
A.Get caught with one's pants down. B.Have ants in one's pants.
C.Wear the pants in the family. D.Burn a hole in one's pocket.

A.doesn't save money B.earns much money

If Confucius (孔子) were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy (哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States,at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.
29.The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ________.
A.provide some key facts about Confucius B.attract the readers' interest in the subject
C.show great respect for the ancient thinker D.prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations
30.We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students ________.
A.have a great interest in studying Chinese B.take an active part in Chinese competitions
C.try to get high scores in Chinese exams D.fight for a chance to learn Chinese
31.What is the best title for the passage
A.Forgotten Wisdom in America B.Huge Fans of the Chinese Language
C.Chinese Culture for Westerners D.Old Thinker with a Big Future
32.The passage is likely to appear in ________.
A.a biography B.a history paper C.a newspaper D.a philosophy textbook
D
Let’s do some sleep math. You lost two hours of sleep every night last week because of a big project due on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, you slept in, getting four extra hours. On the next Monday morning, you were feeling so bright-eyed that you only had one cup of coffee, instead of your usual two. But don’t be cheated by your energy. You’re still carrying around a heavy load of sleepiness, or what experts call “sleep debt”.
Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. It’s a shortage that grows every time we skim some extra minutes off our nightly sleep. “People get more sleep debt gradually without being noticed,” says William C. Dement, founder of the Stanford University Sleep Clinic. Studies show that such short-term sleep lack leads to a foggy brain, worsened sight, and trouble remembering. Long-term effects include fatness, insulin resistance(胰岛素抵抗), and heart disease. A survey by the National Sleep Foundation reports that we’re losing one hour of sleep each night-more than two full weeks of sleep every year.
The good news is that, like all debts, with some work, sleep debt can be repaid. Adding an extra hour or two of sleep a night is the way to make up. For the long-term lack of sleep, relax for a few months to get back into a natural sleep pattern. Go to bed when you are tired, and allow your body to wake you in the morning (no alarm clock allowed). At the beginning, you may expect to have ten hours’ shut-eye per night. As the days pass, however, the amount of sleeping time will gradually decrease.
So earn back the lost sleep and follow the rules of your sleep needs. “When you put away sleep debt, you become a superman,” says Stanford’s Dement.
Why did the author mention the example of sleep math
A.To show in what case you build up a sleep debt.
B. To inform why you need six hours’ sleep every night.
C. To state in what way you can make up for lack of sleep.
D. To explain why you are energetic even without enough sleep.
34. What does Dement mean by saying the underlined sentence in the last paragraph
A. you need a lot of sleep to be a superman.
B. you will be in a good state with enough sleep.
C. you need to be a superman to repay sleep debt.
D. you will become a superman with more sleep debt.
35. What might be the most suitable title for the passage
A. What is sleep debt B. Can coffee refresh you
C. How can you keep energetic D. Can you make up for the lost sleep

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don’t be late for supper," Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!" "OK! " my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to express my sincere thanks to you for your great help with my English learning during the past year.
I can well remember that once I had much trouble in learning English. I couldn't remember new words and phrases. What's worse, I was afraid of speaking English. However, you advised me to read more English magazines and books in my spare time, and listen to English songs. At school, I try to communicate with my teacher and classmates as often as possible. With your help, I have made rapid progress in learning English. At present, I show great interest in it and my oral English has been improved a lot. In a word, as long as we practice speaking English more, we will have a good command of it..
I feel sorry that we have to say goodbye now. Thanks again and wish you a pleasant safe journey home.
读后续写:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. My horse turned to the left to avoid the little rabbit as I held on tightly and tried not to fall. Then my dad turned around and shouted, “Hold on!” All of a sudden the horse began to run. My dad tried to keep up behind us. For a few minutes my horse slowed down to a trot and then stopped beside a river. I looked around and realized that we were way off the track.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Luckily the stars came out and gave us a little light when we were looking for the way to the farm house. After what must have been several hours, we suddenly heard the sound of sheep in the distance. My dad and I both rode our horses towards the sound of the sheep. As we got closer we saw Uncle Paul with a flashlight waving us over. What a night!
