When Fulton posted the video on her Facebook page, she wasn’t expecting to receive such a strong response (反应). We don’t do this on a regular basis but occasionally! The more she has shopped, the bigger the toy gets and the bigger the toy gets, the higher the price! But her papa didn’t say a word about how much the one she picked out was. YES, she is spoiled (宠坏的).” She continued, “We want to thank everyone that has viewed, liked, shared and commented about the video I posted about our Lucy during her shopping trip for a new toy! This happened while we were on vacation in Daytona Beach, Florida. Our kids told us that the video had got around rapidly. It is amazing.” Fulton was truly shocked at how much attention Lucy’s video received since she is used to posting pictures and videos of Lucy on her Facebook all the time. “It’s amazing to see that a video of a precious little dog can bring so many smiles and laughter for people,” says Fulton, who is retired from the Henderson County Schools in Kentucky. “I am receiving so many nice comments from people all over the world.”

Which comes first, happiness or money? Are richer people happier? And if so,how do people get much richer?A recent study could tell you the answer. The study looked into thousands of teenagers and found that those who felt better about life as young adults tended to have higher incomes by the time they turned 29.Those who were happiest earned an average of 8,000 more than those who were the most depressed. The researchers, from University College London and the University of Warwick, say that very gloomy teens,no matter how tall or smart they were, earned 10% less than their peers, while the happier ones earned up to 30% more.
Happier teenagers have an easier time getting through school, college and a job interview, mainly because they always feel better about life.It may also be true that happier people find it easier to make friends, who are often the key to homework help or networking.
A report in June suggested that professional respect was more important than dollars in terms of workplace happiness. In August, scientists announced that they had found the gene for happiness in women. However, the same gene doesn’t appear to have the same effect on men.And in October researchers in the UK and in the US announced that people who eat seven portions of fruit and vegetables a day report being the happiest. The big question is:if it really is true that happier kids end up being wealthier(有钱的) kids,is it necessary for parents to get their kids to do the homework? The fact is that no homework will make kids happy but surely hurt their grades.Studies do show, after all, that more education leads to better paid jobs, which may give us a deep thought. “These findings show that the teenagers’ happiness is important to their future success,” one of the report’s authors writes.“But what is the most important is that we should find a way to help children gain more satisfaction from doing schoolwork.”
8.What conclusion can the researchers draw from the recent study
A.Wealth has nothing to do with happiness at all.
B.Money can make people become happier.
C.Happy teenagers grow up to be wealthier.
D.Schoolwork can help teens achieve success.
9.The main reason why happier people have more chances to succeed is that . .
A.they are hopeful and optimistic about their life
B.they are good at doing their schoolwork
C.they are easy to communicate with others
D.they eat much more fruit and vegetables a day
10.The underlined word “gloomy” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ”.
A.wealthy B.young C.happy D.upset
11.What can be the best title for the text
A.The Way to Educate Kids B.The Secret of Being Wealthier
C.How to Achieve Your Goal D.The Source of Happiness
D
A typical(典型的) school day in the UK starts around 8:30 am. This is often even earlier elsewhere in the world, with students sitting down to their first lesson at 7:30 am in the US. The average teenager ideally(理想的) needs eight to nine hours’ sleep each night, but in reality a lot of teenagers struggle to get this much. A lot of the problems happen because our sleep patterns(模式) are not fixed, and they change as we grow.
So a later school start time could help to solve this problem, by ensuring(确保) to get their eight plus hours sleep and react(对…做出反应) properly to their body’s natural rhythms(节律). There has been a general change over the past 25 years to shorten the school day. This is not at the cost(代价) of teaching time (which has remained constant(不变的)) but at the cost of natural breaks, which has led to reduced lunch time and lesson breaks(课间休息).
Later start time could help teens’ grades and health. This is mainly because it makes the management of children easier. Managing hundreds of children “playing” requires effective staffing(有效的管理). And there is always the fear that behavior worsens during breaks. So the theory goes that having them in class and strictly managed must be better.
But this means that students hardly have enough time to absorb(理解) what they were doing in maths before suddenly they are forced to study ancient history. And teaching staff(教职工) also move through from one class to another, with hardly a rest or time to refocus.
Clearly rethinking the school day could benefit everyone included. Anyway(而且), it could also lead to better achievement in teenagers and less of a struggle for parents in the mornings. For teachers, it could also mean a less stressful day all around and what could be better than that
12.At what time do the students start their first lesson in the US
A.7:00 am. B.7:30 am. C.8:00 am. D.8:30 am.
13.How do schools often shorten the school day
A.They reduce children’s lunch time and lesson breaks.
B.They reduce the teaching time.
C.They properly adjust(调整) children’s natural rhythms.
D.They increase more holidays.
14.What’s the purpose of the short lesson breaks according to the text
A.To make children behave better in class.
B.To make children quickly take in what they learned.
C.To reduce children’s excitement.
D.To manage children more easily.
15.What can we learn about later school start time from the text
A.It will add to the teachers’ pressure. B.It has always been there for 25 years.
C.Parents may support it. D.It benefits the students only.

18 Don't sit back and let things happen to us. Co out and make things happen. We are what we do, not what we say we'll do. Stop saying "1 wish" and start saying "I will". Tum our dreams into plans.
Do the work. We can't underestimate(低估) a person who always works hard. Be that person. 19_.Always remember that the task ahead of us is never greater than the strength within us. Do what's night, not what's easy. Our dreams are worth it.
