Traveling without a map in different countries, I find out about different ways of giving directions every time I ask "How can I get to the post office "
Foreign tourists are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don't have name signs. In Japan, people use landmarks(标志性建筑) to give directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, "Go straight down to the comer. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop."
People in Los Angeles, the US, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance by time, not miles. "How far away is the post office " you ask. "Oh," they answer, "it's about five minutes from here." You don't understand completely, "Yes, but how many miles away is it, please " To this question you won't get an answer, because most probably they don't know it themselves.
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language. Instead, a Greek will often say, "Follow me." Then he'll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes a person doesn't know the answer to your question. What happens in the situation A New Yorker might say, "Sorry, I have no idea." But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers "I don't know." People there believe that "I don't" is impolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan! However, one thing will help you reach your destination everywhere in the world. It's body language.
1.Which of the following is probably an example of Japanese directions
A."The post office is at Street Kamira."
B."Turn right at the hospital and go past a school."
C."The post office is about five minutes from here."
D."Go south two miles. Turn west and then go another mile."
2.Why don't people in Los Angeles give directions in miles
A.They prefer to lead you the way.
B.They prefer to use body language.
C.They often have no idea of distance measured by miles.
D.They use landmarks to give directions instead of distance.
3.How do Greeks give directions
A.Using street names. B.Using landmarks.
C.Leading the way. D.Giving people a wrong direction.
4.According to the last paragraph, we can learn that _______.
A.people in Yucatan sometimes give wrong directions
B.people in Mexico know street names well
C.body language makes you get lost in Yucatan
D.people in Mexico prefer to use body language

We humans like to conquer things.
For the same reason that soccer players want to hold the World Cup trophy (奖杯) and tennis players crave a Grand Slam win, mountaineers dream of reaching the highest peak on the planet—Mount Qomolangma, which is about 8,848 meters above sea level.
"Everybody wants to stand on top of the world," Mirza Ali from Pakistan who had just "conquered" Mount Qomolangma, told the Los Angeles Times.
However, this desire to conquer Mount Qomolangma has become so strong that we have begun to travel in the wrong direction.
During this year's climbing season—from March to May—at least 11 climbers died in the Himalayas, making it one of the worst seasons on record. And the fact that many of the climbers were inexperienced is one of the major factors contributing to the tragedy, according to USA Today.
"They don't train very hard. They underestimate(低估) Qomolangma," Jangbu Sherpa, who has been working as a guide on Mount Qomolangma since 2006,told NBC News. "There are lots of climbers who just want to check the box so that they can say they've been to the top of the world."
This ignorant attitude of climbers also leads to other problems—apart from putting their own lives at risk, of course. According to The Huffington Post, the mountain's cleaning group collected 12 tons of trash—including food wrappers(包装袋), and oxygen tanks—left behind this climbing season. This once holy (神圣的) and peaceful comer of the world has, as The Atlantic reporter Margaret Grebowics put it, lost its magic.
Perhaps what we should do now is restore the meaning of the activity itself—the real meaning. And for Alison Levine, a US mountaineer who reached the summit(山顶) of Mount Qomolangma in 2010, the meaning doesn't come with the summit itself, but with everything that led her up to it.
"When I did make it to the summit, what I realized is that standing on top of a mountain doesn't change you and doesn't change the world," Levine told NPR. "It's really about the journey. The journey is the most important thing."
It's true that we humans like to conquer things. But the first step of conquering anything is probably to learn to conquer our own greed and ignorance.
1.The underlined word "crave" in Paragraph 3 means "________".
A.have no interest in B.have a strong desire for
C.be optimistic about D.be likely to win
2.What is a major cause of the climbing tragedy this year, according to USA Today
A.Not having enough training and experience. B.Not bringing enough oxygen tanks.
C.Not having professional climbing equipment. D.Not being accustomed to the cold weather.
3.What matters more to Levine when she climbs
A.Being on top of the world. B.Being able to change the world.
C.The journey to reach the summit. D.The spirit to conquer the summit.
4.What attitude does the author hold toward climbing Mount Qomolangma
A.Regretful. B.Critical. C.Encouraging. D.Doubtful.

Last weekend I visited Rome for the first time. I spent three busy days in the Italian capital, seeing lots of tourist attractions and walking down streets lit with Christmas decorations. There are a lot of things I love about the city.
Rome is one of the most ancient cities in the world and is full of wonderful relics(遗迹) from its distant past. These monuments include the Roman Forum and the vast Coliseum where gladiators used to fight each other until death and hunt animals coming from another country. The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating: you can't quite believe how old they are.
I studied the masterpieces of the Renaissance period at university and was very excited to see them in real life. I walked around the museum in Vatican City and saw plenty of famous sculptures (雕塑). The best part of the visit was, without doubt, the Sistine Chapel Ceiling, painted in the early 16th century by Michelangelo. It was so breathtaking that I couldn't tear my eyes away from it.
In Rome, there is a lot of food on offer for tourists but some of it isn't of very good quality. I made an effort to find reliable restaurants to taste the popular meals of the region, like pasta with tomato, onion and bacon. I also love eating ice cream and hot chocolate under the Christmas lights.
Rome has not only lots of luxury boutiques(精品店) but also plenty of shops that were more in my price range! It was a perfect opportunity to go and buy presents for my family and friends. There was also a Christmas market, where I bought a sparkly decoration for the tree.
1.The underlined word "gladiators" in the 2nd paragraph probably means "_________".
A.athletes B.butchers C.invaders D.fighters
2.The author found the ruins of buildings and temples fascinating because _________.
A.they represent Rome's religion
B.they are relics from Rome's distant past
C.you can't help wondering how old they are
D.they include the Roman Forum and the vast Coliseum
3.What is mainly discussed in the 3rd paragraph
A.The great museums of Italy.
B.The sculptures in Rome.
C.Art-related activities during the visit.
D.The achievements of the Renaissance period in Italy.
4.When visiting Rome, you should be careful in choosing ________.
A.the attractions B.the food C.the hotels D.the luxury boutiques

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn't interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn't decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement (实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month's placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn't have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through(穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus.

The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces.

A.答案:1-3.BDA
Oxford: Inchudes a guided tour of England's oldest university and colleges.
Hampton Court was once the home of four Kings and one Queen.
In Japan, people use landmarks(标志性建筑) to give directions instead of street names.
People in Los Angeles, the US, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure distance by time, not miles. To this question you won't get an answer, because most probably they don't know it themselves.
Instead, a Greek will often say, "Follow me." Then he'll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
People there believe that "I don't" is impolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan!
B“have a strong desire for(对…… A项“对……
And the fact that many of the climbers were inexperienced is one of the major factors contributing to the tragedy, according to USA Today." They don't train very hard可知,许多登山者缺乏经验和训练是造成这场灾难的主要原因之一。故选A项。
The journey is the most important thing.(旅途是最重要的事情。) When I did make it to the summit, what I realized is that standing on top of a mountain doesn't change you and doesn't change the world,"可知,当Levine登顶的时候,她意识到站在山顶不会改变一个人,也不会改变世界。
But the first step of conquering anything is probably to learn to conquer our own greed and ignorance.(但是,征服任何事物的第一步可能就是学会征服我们自己的贪婪和无知。)
根据画线词之后的"used to fight each other until death and hunt animals coming from another country"可知,该词意为“斗士”。故选D项。
根据第二段中的"full of wonderful relics (遗迹) from its distant past"和"The ruins of buildings and temples are fascinating"可知选B项。
In Rome, there is a lot of food on offer for tourists but some of it isn't of very good quality. I made an effort to find reliable restaurants to taste the popular meals of the region..."

He invited us to have coffee可知,那位女士的丈夫对作者一家的到来表示欢迎。
talk about谈论;wait for等待;cheer up使振奋起来;pick up捡起,用车接。根据后句She came past 12.
9.根据后面的so as not to disturb them可知作者想要悄悄地走,以免打扰对方。
keep in touch保持联系。
答案:where; lost; to cross; masses; reached; eighth; celebration; amazing; so; an

manage to do sth.
此处表示为了庆祝……,应用In celebration of,故填celebration。
此处与后面的第一个that连用,构成so...that...
此处为感叹句“What+a/an+adj.+n.(+主语+谓语).”,且exciting以元音音素开头,故填不定冠词an。

第二节
答案:
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. He hit the road face down and rolled over. He lay still in the middle of the road as the bus sped away. None of the cars behind stopped. Thinking that he could die in a matter of minutes, I stopped my car and carefully examined the boy. With the help of some passers-by, I lifted the unconscious boy into the car and raced back to the hospital. Then his family was contacted, and he was wheeled into emergency surgery. I drove home, exhausted but happy.
The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces. What a feeling it was to help save the life of another person! I spent the rest of the day in a state of the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced. Driving home hat evening, I decided on my career path. Two months of placements could not do what 30 minutes' helping an accident victim had done for me. This experience taught me that at times, the decisions are made for you—and that whatever happens is always for the best.
