What makes a book a good read It is a great question, but there’s no easy answer!
1 There are so many styles and types of books. This is because people have different likes. For fun, go and read the 1-star Amazon reviews for your favorite popular book. Many people hate it and can’t finish it! Does this mean the book is actually terrible 2 Art is highly subjective (主观的).
There are certainly many good books on writing and story structure, but they’re more general guides than step-by-step guides. Since books have no hidden parts (all the words are there on the page), it’s necessary to study the books you and others think are good reads and ask, “ 3 ”.
Most serious writers have early readers who read drafts (初稿) and provide their opinions. 4 They learn which parts aren’t as good as they think. And then they rewrite the drafts. A good read is usually the result of many improvements of a bad one.
One difficulty in writing is that it is hard to find people who can give useful opinions beyond “I like it” or “I hate it”. 5 And you have to try to be receptive to things that you don’t want to hear. At the same time, be glad to make changes to a draft based on what you learned.
A. Why do people like reading books
B. Maybe, it depends on your preferences.
C. Why does this work the way that it does
D. You have to try to find good advice givers.
E. They don’t know how to produce good books.
F. These writers are learning from actual readers.
G. What interests one person may not work for another.
第二节(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Do you know some people have memories that are completely wrong They remember things that never happened. Sometimes, many people have the same wrong memory. When this happens, it’s believed that it is because of the Mandela Effect.
People first noticed the Mandela Effect in 2013. That year, Nelson Mandela passed away. However, thousands of people remembered him dying in the 1980s. They described watching his funeral (葬礼) on TV. But in fact, Mandela lived to be 95 years old. How could that be How could so many people have the same wrong memory
Most experts explain the Mandela Effect using brain science. When we make memories, our brains keep them in groups. Each group includes memories that are similar to each other. Sometimes, our brains mess up. They mix two similar memories together. That’s why people thought Nelson Mandela died in the 1980s. They knew he was imprisoned (坐牢) during the 1980s. For some reason, they mixed his imprisonment with his death.
That would explain why so many people in 2013 thought Nelson Mandela was already dead. But would it explain why all those people gave similar descriptions of his funeral Could all those people have mixed up the same two memories
There are many other examples of the Mandela Effect. Have you ever seen the Mona Lisa Many people remember the woman in the painting with a frown (皱眉). Others say she was straight-faced. If you look at the Mona Lisa today, you’ll find she’s smiling. Did you ever read a series of children’s books about The Berenstein Bears No, you didn’t. In our reality, the books are about The Berenstain Bears, spelled with an “a” instead of an “e”. Still, thousands of people believe they remember the name spelled differently.
Are these wrong memories the result of mixed memories, or is there another explanation Without further science research, we can’t say for sure!

Many people have fears while traveling abroad. But with so many good places to visit in this world, fears that hold you back are stopping you from wonderful experiences more than they are protecting you. Not being able to communicate can not only be worrying, but sometimes it can even be a bit scary. But don’t let a fear of failing to speak the foreign language inhibit you.
First, try to learn a few words ahead of time, like please, thank you, hello, goodbye. This will go a long way in showing the locals you’re trying. A phrasebook can help, but remember that you may not understand the reply you get.
Second, write down the hotel you chose, and any places of interest you’re planning on visiting. It helps to show a taxi driver or someone you’re asking directions from if you have it written down since it’s possible that you won’t pronounce it correctly.
Third, one of the few words I find to be common is “toilet”. In the US people often ask where to find the bathroom or restroom, but that’s not so easily understood for someone whose native language (母语) isn’t English. But even in the middle of Southeast Asia, people understand the word toilet.
Lastly, try drawing. Andy and I were in a taxi in Izmir, Turkey trying to get to the castle, but the driver didn’t know what we were saying. So Andy quickly drew a castle. The driver laughed and nodded, and then brought us to the castle.
5. What’s the purpose of the author telling us his own story in Izmir, Turkey
A. To tell us drawing is helpful.
B. To show drawing is easy.
C. To show they were wise.
D. To tell us how to draw.
6. What does the author try to do through the text
A. Reduce our fear of learning a foreign language.
B. Teach us how to learn a foreign language abroad.
C. Show us how to ask for help in foreign countries.
D. Tell us how to communicate when we tour abroad.
7. What does the underlined word “inhibit” in the first paragraph mean
A. Hurt.
B. Change.
C. Prevent.
D. Protect.
C
By the time the British adventurer Ash Dykes reached Chongqing 178 days after starting to trek (长途跋涉) along the Yangtze River from its source to the sea, the most difficult part of the journey was over. Dykes had completed about 2,430 miles, and all he needed to do was cover the next 1,550 miles in 187 days or less to complete the whole journey.
On August 26 last year, a three-man team, including two guides and a horse, hit the road at the starting point, the source of the Yangtze River in the south of Qinghai Province. Then at different times for the next two months, different people had come to join them.

However, because of the problems in preparations, Dykes arrived in Qinghai in late August as the days were becoming shorter and colder. Not wanting to wait for another year, he decided to continue.
Within a few days three of the adventurers experienced serious high altitude sickness (高原反应). In the mountains, the team had to light fire to scare off bears, and once they had been followed by a group of wolves for two days. They were forced to quit the journey. In fact, Dykes has been walking alone since late October.
“The rest of the trip would be much easier,” Dykes said. He started from Chongqing on the second half of the journey on March 11. At the same time,he called on more people to join him in some parts of the trek as a way to encourage environmental protection.
“Travelling along the Yangtze River is not only a great act, it’s also a chance to enjoy the true beauty and wonders of China, and attract people’s attention to the environment and good work to protect it,” he wrote on his Weibo. “However, the kindness and warmth of the local people have struck me so much that it is they that make the journey unforgettable.”
8. What do we know about Dykes’ journey along the Yangtze River
A. It will cover about 3,980 miles.
B. It will be joined by more and more people.
C. It began in Qinghai and will end in Chongqing.
D. It’ll take him over a year to finish the whole journey.
9. What made Dykes unable to start the journey as planned
A. Bad weather conditions.
B. Not enough preparations.
C. No partners.
D. High altitude sickness.
10. What’s the text mainly about
A. The importance of protecting the Yangtze River.
B. The best way to travel along the Yangtze River.
C. People’s effort to protect the Yangtze River.
D. Dykes’ journey along the Yangtze River.

第二节 概要写作(25分)
Study after study shows the most important thing deciding the quality (质 量) of the education a child receives is his teacher. Teaching has become one of the most difficult jobs today. But what makes a great teacher
Responsible teachers set high expectations for all students. They expect that all students can achieve in their classroom, and they don’t give up on those who do poorly in study.
Great teachers have clear teaching goals. They have lesson plans that give students a clear idea of what they will learn, what the homework is and what the grading standard is. Homework has learning goals and gives students enough chances to practice new skills. At the same time, they are prepared and organized. They are in their classrooms early and ready to teach. They present lessons in a clear way and instill (逐渐灌输) a hunger in their students to learn more on their own.
To become great teachers, they should engage (吸引) students and get them to look at problems in all kinds of ways. They use facts as a starting point, not an end point; they ask “why” questions, look at all sides and encourage students to imagine what will happen next. They ask questions frequently to make sure students are following along. They try to engage the whole class, and they don’t allow a few students to control the class. They keep students active with many different and lively ways.
Great teachers have strong relationships with their students and show that they care about them as friends. Great teachers are warm, kind, energetic and caring. Teachers with these qualities are known to stay after school and make themselves available to students and parents who need them. They often communicate with parents. They reach parents through parent-teacher meetings and frequent written reports. They will pick up the telephone to call a parent if they are concerned about a student.
