第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
The world is filled with many interesting sounds. Some are very pleasant to hear; others are unpleasant to our ears. In a day, you probably hear hundreds of different sounds.
All sounds are different. Some may be soft; others may be loud. Some sounds are high; others are low.
Some sounds are useful. Without sound we cannot talk or listen to one another. The ringing alarm clock makes people wake up. The hooting of a horn (喇叭声) on the road warns careless people of danger.
We make sounds by making things move to and fro. This to-and-fro movement is called vibration (振动). It means moving up and down or forwards and backwards very fast. This makes sound waves.
We can make sounds in many ways, for example, by shouting, clapping our hands and striking the table. We can make sounds only by making things vibrate. We can talk because we can make our vocal cords (声带) vibrate. Our vocal cords are in a sound box or voice box. Two vocal cords vibrate when our lungs force the air through them.
56. We can make sounds ______.
A. by making things still
B. by making things vibrate
C. by making things jump up and down
D. by changing the positions of things
57. Some sounds are useful because ______.
A. they can wake people up
B. they can warn people to be careful when they are crossing the road
C. they make it possible for people to talk or listen to each other
D. all of the above
58. When the air is through our vocal cords, it can make them ______.
A. vibrate B. breathe the air
C. talk to each other D. move forward and backward
59. Sounds are different because ______.
A. different sounds have different vibrations
B. different sounds have different sound waves
C. different sounds have different vocal cords
D. both A and B

A few days ago my wife sent me out to buy something. When I came home, I handed her a paper bag and said, “Here are the apples you wanted.” She looked in the bag, and then she looked at me. “I told you,” she said slowly, “to buy some eggs.”
I felt worried about my absent-mindedness, so I went to see a doctor. He was a very kind man. “I have seen many people like you. It’s nothing to worry about,” he said. “If you know you are absent-minded, you are all right. But if you do not know you’re absent-minded, you may be really in trouble.”
“Many famous people were absent-minded,” the doctor told me. “Thomas Edison was standing in line one day to pay his taxes. When he arrived at the window, he found that he had forgotten his own name. He had to ask the man who was behind him to tell him who he was.”
I felt much better and got up to leave. “Thank you, doctor,” I said. “How much do I have to pay you?”
“Ten dollars for the check-up,” the doctor said.
“But doctor, I did not have a check-up!”
For a moment the doctor looked puzzled. Then he said, “Oh, yes, it was the patient before you who had a check-up. How absent-minded I am!”

“I would almost rather see you dead,” Robert S. Cassatt, a leading banker of Philadelphia, shouted when his twenty-year-old eldest daughter announced that she wanted to become an artist. In the 19th century, playing at drawing or painting on dishes was all right for a young lady, but serious work in art was not. And when the young lady’s family ranked among (跻身于) the best of Philadelphia’s social families, such an idea could not even be considered.
That was how Mary Cassatt, born in 1844, began her struggle as an artist. She did not tremble before her father’s anger. Instead, she opposed (抗拒) him with courage and at last made him change his mind. Mary Cassatt gave up her social position and all thought of a husband and a family, which in those times was unthinkable for a young lady. In the end, after long years of hard work and perseverance (坚持), she became America’s most important woman artist and the internationally recognized leading woman painter of the time.
64. How did Mr Cassatt react (反应) when his daughter made her announcement?
A. He feared for her life. B. He was very angry. C. He nearly killed her. D. He warned her.
65. What in fact was Mr Cassatt’s main reason for opposing his daughter’s wish?
A. Drawing and painting was simply unthinkable among ladies in those days.
B. He did not believe his daughter wanted to work seriously in art.
C. He believed an artist’s life would be too hard for his daughter.
D. Ladies of good families simply did not become artists in those times.
66. What do we know about Mary Cassatt’s character from the text?
A. She was brave in going against old ideas.
B. She got tired of always obeying her father.
C. She hated playing at drawing and painting.
D. She did not mind being poor at all.
67. According to the text, which of the following was generally considered the most important in the life of a woman in the US in Mary Cassatt’s time?
A. Money. B. Career.
C. Marriage. D. Courage.
D
Have you ever been afraid? Do thunder and lightning make your heart beat faster? Maybe your mouth goes dry when your teacher says you will be given a test, or your palms(手掌) sweat when it’s your turn to give your report in front of the class. Perhaps you get butterflies in your stomach when you see the bully (欺负人的人) who chooses you.
We all have fears sometimes. That’s true no matter how big we are or how brave we can be. Fear of getting too close to a campfire may save you from a bad burn. And fear of getting a bad grade on a test may make you study hard. Being nervous can also sharpen your senses and help you perform better during a track meet. Some people even enjoy being a little scared (恐惧的). That’s why they like to watch scary movies.
Usually, our bodies go into fight only when there is something to fear. However, sometimes this happens when there doesn’t seem to be anything to be frightened about. When you feel scared but there doesn’t seem to be a clear reason, that’s called anxiety (焦虑). For some kids, the feeling of anxiety or worry can happen at any time. For others, it might appear only at certain times, like when they are leaving their home or family to go somewhere. For some people, this feeling of anxiety happens almost all the time and gets in the way of what they want to do.
Tell your parents if your anxiety becomes strong and is getting in the way of what you want to do. Your parents can take you to a doctor, who can help to find out if a medical problem is making you feel anxious. But you can also try these ways to kill the feeling yourself.
68. What does the underlined phrase “get butterflies in your stomach” (Paragraph 1) probably mean?
A. Get angry. B. Get nervous.
C. Get hurt. D. Get excited.
69. What does the writer want to show in the second paragraph?
A. Brave people won’t feel fear whatever happens.
B. Children are easier to show fear than adults.
C. Fear is a sign of being sick and unhealthy.
D. Fear can be good to people sometimes.
70. According to the passage, we can learn that anxiety _________.
A. often appears before an important exam
B. appears when people face some frightening things
C. can’t be treated once it begins
D. sometimes doesn’t seem to have a clear reason
71. What would be talked about in the next paragraph?
A. The great harm fear does to people’s health.
B. Who to turn to for help when people feel anxious. C. Some good ways to help people deal with fear.
D. What kind of people can easily feel anxious.
E
Once upon a time, a businessman named Ray Kroc discovered a restaurant owned by two brothers. The restaurant served just four things: hamburgers, French fries, milk shakes and Coca-Cola. They were clean and cheap, and the service was quick. Mr Kroc liked it so much that he paid the brothers so that he could use their idea and their name: McDonald’s.
Mr Kroc opened his first McDonald’s in 1955. Four years later, there were 100 McDonald’s restaurants. Mr Kroc knew Americans liked success. Therefore, he put up signs saying how many millions of McDonald’s hamburgers people had bought. In just four years, the number of McDonald’s restaurants was one hundred million.
Anyone who wants to open a McDonald’s must first work in one for a week. Then, they do a nine-month training program in the restaurants and at McDonald’s University in Chicago. There they learn the McDonald’s philosophy (理念): quality control, service, cleanliness and cheap prices. McDonald’s has strict rules. Hamburgers must be served before they are ten minutes old, and French fries must be served before they are seven minutes old.
McDonald’s has never stopped looking for new methods to attract customers. Chicken, fish, salad and, in some places, pizza are now on the menu. McDonald’s in Holland even sells burgers without meat.
The international popularity of McDonald’s shows it has found the recipe (秘诀) for success.
72. If you want to open a McDonald’s, you must .

Text 1
W: Hi, Bob, have you heard that three more people will be sent to Europe besides those two? M: Oh, really? They are so lucky. I wish I could be sent there, too.
Text 2
W: Can you drive a little faster? M: Sorry. The speed limit is 40 miles an hour here.
Text 3
M: I called you last night. Why didn’t you return my call? W: You called?
Text 4
W: It is said that you are going to spend your holidays in London this year. M: No, anywhere but London. In fact, I feel like seeing the country, not a crowded and noisy capital.
Text 5
M: Are you ready for your final exam next week? W: Not really. The reading list is too long, but I’ll take the test anyway.
Text 6
W: My bag is missing. Has anybody handed one in? M: No. What kind of bag is it? W: It is a shoulder bag. M: What colour is it? W: It is brown and it is made of leather. M: What was in the bag? W: There was a purse and two keys. M: Was there anything else in it? W: Yes. There was a letter with my name on it. M: Good. If anyone hands it in, I’ll inform you right away. W: Thank you very much. M: You’re welcome. Don’t worry. It will soon turn up.
Text 7
M: Er ... a friend told me that you have dance classes here. W: That’s right. M: Can you give me some information about days and times, please? W: Yes, there are four classes a day, from Monday to Saturday, nothing on Sunday. M: Yeah. W: The first one is from 8: 30 to 9: 30. Then there is one in the afternoon from 2: 30 to 3: 30. M: Right. I have to. I haven’t got any money. W: What kind of thing are you looking for? M: Maybe in a shop. The problem is I don’t know how to look for a job. W: Why don’t you look in the newspaper? M: That’s a good idea.
Text 9
M: What’s your trouble? W: I can’t tell exactly, but I don’t know whether our senses have anything to do with our health. M: Very much. Scientists say that making the most of our senses when we are young can keep us healthy later on in life. W: Is that true? M: Yes. One reason why we become stressed and have high blood pressure is that we misuse our senses in our everyday life.W: I see. But should we develop all our senses or not? M: Yes, we should try our best to develop all our senses. W: But how? M: For example, while having dinner, listen to some enjoyable music rather than watching TV. While relaxing at home, have some flowers next to you that smell nice. W: What else can we do? M: While sleeping, wear a nightshirt that is pleasant to touch — it will make us sleep deeply. We all know sleeping well is very important because good sleep gives us the chance to dream. Dreams keep us young and healthy. W: Oh, I learn a lot. Thank you, doctor.
Text 10
In order to learn a foreign language, four things are necessary. Firstly, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it correctly and quickly. Thirdly, we must be able to read the language, and fourthly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are grammatically correct.
There is no easy way to be successful in language learning. A good memory is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning long lists of words and their meanings by heart, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn to use the language. If we are satisfied with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. “Learn through use” is a good piece of advice for those who are studying a new language. Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can.

书面表达(One possible version)
Dear Peter,
I’m writing to ask whether you could do me a favor.
I want to have a pen friend, hopefully a girl in her early twenties, and with interests similar to mine. I hope she is someone who is interested in traveling, swimming, and playing table tennis. Besides, it would be better for her to have a pet dog as I have kept one at home for some time. With such a pen friend, I think I can share with her our traveling experiences, our pleasure of taking care of pets, or whatever we have in common. And I believe I will also improve my English and learn more about her country.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
重点解析
21. B。根据句意,quality为正确答案,quality of life意思是“生活水平”。23. B。分析句子结构可知,空格之后为定语从句,修饰先行词the factory,而the factory 在从句中作地点状语,故选where。28. B。devote ... to ... 为固定搭配,意思“把……用于……”,to为介词,其后接名词或动词的-ing形式。35. D。本题考查倒装句。当only位于句首,用来修饰状语(从句)时,句子需要用倒装语序。56. B。根据短文第五段“We can make sounds only by making things vibrate.”一句可知,我们可以通过使物体振动而发出声音。60. B。推理判断题。根据第一段中“She looked in the bag, and then she look at me ... she said slowly ...”这些描写可以推测出,妻子当时的表情很“惊讶”。64. B。由短文第一段第一句“‘I would almost rather see you dead,’ Robert S. Cassatt, a leading banker of Philadelphia, shouted when his twenty-year-old eldest daughter announced that she wanted to become an artist.”可知,当得知他的女儿想成为一个画家时,Mr Cassatt非常生气。70. D。由短文第三段“When you feel scared but there doesn’t seem to be a clear reason, that’s called anxiety.”可知,有时焦虑心理的产生是没有明确的原因的。
