Building a five-star hotel in the middle of a valuable wilderness(荒野)without damaging(破坏)the environment might not be easy, but it is far from impossible. The King Pacific Lodge in British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest shows that if enough care and attention is taken, the task is possible.
Unlike many other hotel building plans,no trees were cut down and no land was wasted to build it.The Lodge does not have the same location(位置) but sits on a floating boat pulled into the sea bay in May,till September. Those wishing to stay in one of its seventeen rooms must access it by boat or seaplane. Each guest staying at the Lodge is charged 3% tax(税)on the protection of the natural resources, but is given the chance to see whales and bears. And since these are the main attractions of the area and of the Lodge, the management knows well that in order to stay in business they must make the area untouched.
In 2000,the Lodge management signed an agreement with the native(本土的)Gitga’at people.Together they work for the benefit of the area. The Lodge knows that the native tribe(部落)is the owners of the land,so it pays the tribe for the use of their land and even supports the native youth and employs the tribe’s people. They,in turn, teach the newcomers about the local culture.
The King Pacific Lodge is one of a growing number of tourism companies that manage to minimize their environmental damage to win the approval(批准)of the local government where they set up their business. These companies pay more attention to environmental protection and are careful to use natural resources and protect endangered animals.Realizing how destructive tourism can be,they want to avoid the love-it-to-death effect of tourism.

23.According to Paragraph 3,we learn that some of the native people .
A.want to learn the newcomers’ culture
B.are not willing to sell their land
C.are employed by local government to work for the Lodge

24.According to the passage,the tourist industry .
A.will always do harm to the environment
B.cares little about the importance of environmentally friendly tourism
C.can do less damage to the environment
D.always has a disagreement with the local government

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5th and was created to inspire people around the globe to take an active part in environmental protection and learn more about ways we can help to guarantee the future of our planet is safe.
The very first World Environment Day took place in 1974,established by the United Nations General Assembly on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment that took place in 1972.Each year the United Nations picks a theme and a host city where anyone who is concerned about the environment can talk about environmental topics with others, followed by different kinds of exhibits to promote environmental awareness.Environmentalists, academics and scientists come together to bring new ideas on the table concerning the environment.
The 2018 World Environment Day was hosted by India, and the theme was Beat Plastic Pollution. It urged people to explore and choose supportable alternatives like paper or cloth bags to reduce the production and use of disposable plastic, which made up 10% of all of the waste.Even though the United Nations picks a specific host city every year, people around the world still celebrate World Environment Day in their hometowns with parades (游行),concerts, cleaning up,tree planting and all kinds of green actions to work towards having a beautiful planet and battling pollution.
World Environment Day is not a public holiday,so you won’t be getting the day off work or school, but if you want to celebrate, why not bring it to the attention of your parents, friends, colleagues or classmates World Environment Day is all about working together to take action for the planet,so try to get everyone you know interested in helping do something.Things as small as making sure people have a way to recycle can make a difference. You could also try beautifying your neighbourhood by planting gardens, learn about green foods, raise money for a local wildlife conservation group or simply learn about the effects of different products on the earth.
25.Why is World Environment Day set up

When she first started learning about the climate change from one of her elders,Fawn Sharp was invited on a helicopter flight over the Olympic Mountains to survey the Mount Anderson glacier. But the glacier was gone, melted by the warming climate.Sharp had a deep sense of loss when she discovered the glacier wasn’t there anymore.
Loss is a growing issue for people working and living on the front lines of climate change. And that gave Jennifer Wren Atkinson,a full-time lecturer at the University of Washington Bothell,US,an idea for a class.
This term, she taught students on the Bothell campus about the emotional burdens of environmental studies. She used the experiences of Native American tribes(部落),scientists and activists, and asked her 24 students to face the reality that there is no easy fix—that “this is such an intractable problem that they’re going to be dealing with it for the rest of their lives”.
Student Cody Dillon used to be a climate science skeptic(怀疑论者).Then he did his own reading and research, and changed his mind.
Dillon wasn’t going into environmental work—he was a computer-science major.Yet,the potential for a worldwide environmental catastrophe seemed so real to him five years ago that he quit his job and became a full-time volunteer for an environmental group that worked on restoration(恢复) projects.
Six months into the work,he decided that Atkinson’s class was just what he was looking for—a place where he could discuss his concerns about a changing climate.
Atkinson said she hoped the class helped her students prepare themselves for the amount of environmental loss that will happen over their lifetimes.
“We are already changing the planet—so many species are going to be lost, displaced or massively impacted,” she said.“The future isn’t going to be what they imagined.”
28.Why did the author mention the case of Fawn Sharp
A.To lay a basis for Fawn Sharp’s further research.
B.To prove Fawn Sharp’s work is similar to Atkinson’s.
C.To lead into the issue of loss caused by climate change.
D.To show scientists’ concern about the Mount Anderson glacier.
29.Which of the following words best explains “intractable” underlined in Paragraph 3
A.Simple. B.Difficult.
C.Common. D.Interesting.
30.What’s the main purpose of Atkinson’s class
A.To explore how different people deal with climate change.
B.To get students more concerned about the environmental issue.
C.To find solutions to the environmental issue of Olympic Mountains.
D.To teach students how to conduct research about environment.
31.How did Atkinson’s class influence Dillon
A.It made him work as a part-time volunteer for restoration projects.
B.It made him realize a planet-wide climate disaster would happen.
C.It encouraged him to be more involved in environmental protection.
D.It discouraged him to work on restoration projects for the environment.
D
Population data for European mountain birds have been for the first time combined in a recent study, with worrying results: the abundance of mountain-specialist birds has declined by as much as 10% in the 2000s.
Ecological communities in mountain areas include species not found in any other habitats. These species are also very susceptible to climate change,as global warming is reducing their liveable habitats. In principle, species may relocate further up the mountains, but closer to the top their habitat inevitably shrinks.
According to the new article, the abundance of European mountain birds has in fact declined in line with climate change projections.
The recently released study examined the population trends of 44 bird species in the 2000s in the mountain and fell regions of Fennoscandia,Great Britain, the Alps and the Iberian Peninsula.A decline was seen in 14 of the observed species, while eight of them saw significant increase.
“On average, population decline among the species studied was 7% over the 13-year research period, making the situation of mountain birds distinctly worse compared to,for example,European forest birds, whose numbers did not change during the same period,” explains Aleksi Lehikoinen,an Academy of Finland research fellow at the Finnish Museum of Natural History Luomus (part of the University of Helsinki),who headed the study.
The situation is direst for species that only inhabit mountain regions and are unable to live in other European environments. For these species, known as mountain specialists, the numbers dwindled by as much as 10% during the monitoring period.
32.Which one is TRUE according to a recently released study
A.All 44 bird species decreased.
B.Only 8 of the species declined.
C.14 of the observed species declined.
D.There was no change in the number of the bird species.
33.Why did the liveable habitats of the species reduce
A.Air pollutions.
B.Global warming.
C.Human activities.
D.Competition with other species.
34.What can we get from the passage about European mountain birds
A.They are newly found species.
B.They can be found at any place of the world.
C.The number of the birds has decreased greatly.
D.The number of the birds has increased greatly.
35.What does the word “direst” mean in the last paragraph
A.Serious. B.Useful.
C.Suitable. D.Waterless.

Zoey admits it was a little sad saying goodbye to her fish. 36 Zoey’s class at Hawthorne Elementary School spent most of the school year raising the fish from the time when they were nothing more than little eggs with eyes.
The program the Hawthorne kids took part in is called “Trout in the classroom”. 37 The kids at Wilson Middle School in Fishersville took part in the project, too.
“I got to feed them every morning and watch them grow up,” said seventh-grader Lauren Clayton.“We have to protect them,or some of the fish could go extinct.” Lauren was right. 38 But later, pollution, overfishing and loss of natural habitat have pushed some species to the danger of extinction.
Thanks to the kids in the program, trout are being reintroduced into rivers and streams across the country. And by doing that, the kids are helping to restore there local ecosystems—the natural balance that existed before human disturbed it.
39 Because the fish are in their classrooms, the kids are responsible for making sure there is cool, clean water, proper food and proper living conditions in the tanks.
By the middle of May,they were “as big as a finger”. That is,they are old enough to be released into Oneida Creek.“Remember to swim back here to meet us and eat the food we bring little trout.” 40
A.The kids can learn some scientific lessons at school.
B.Make sure when a worm lands on the surface, never bite.
C.Finally,Zoey read them goodbye letters before letting them go.
D.They can also see how our actions affect the trout’s ability to survive.
E.But she honestly thinks it’s good that they are going to a natural home.
F.It’s a national project supported by a conservation group called Trout Unlimited.
G.When America was first founded, river and streams across the continent were filled with fish.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Nowadays, more and more college students have no problem walking into a classroom and opening their laptops.Others may spend an entire study period with a smartphone in hand. Some people argue that the increasing use of technology can have many helpful effects on society. But a recent research suggests that using technology during class time may harm college students’ ability to remember and process the subject material.
Arnold Glass, a professor in Rutgers University in New Jersey, and a student researcher investigated the issue of divided student attention. The study involved 118 Rutgers students who were taking the same level college class. The students were permitted to use any electronic device during half of their daily class periods.During the other half, no one was allowed to use any technology.
The researchers found that the average daily quiz results showed no evidence of harmful effects from the use of technology. However, the average results of the larger tests and final exam showed that all the students performed poorly when they were permitted to use technology in the classroom.Glass argues that it shows the use of electronic devices in the classroom prevents students from processing information. When the students hear what the professor is saying, they might be buying things online or reading unrelated emails at the same time. And that, Glass says, makes it harder for the information to enter their long term memory.Even though the students know what the professor is saying at that time, they no longer remember it a week later because they have missed the opportunity.
However, Lauren Margulieux, an assistant professor at Georgia State University in Atlanta argues that there are times when classroom use of technology is unavoidable. So, he says, educators need to consider that something other than technology is distracting students.
In fact, a special software program has been created.Students can use the program, which engages students more with the class material on their personal devices during a given class. It can also be used to observe student activity and prevent them from opening unrelated pages and programs.

Good evening, and welcome to the British Council. My name is John Parker and I’ve been asked to talk to you briefly about certain aspects of life in the UK before you actually go there. So I’m going to talk first about the best ways of making social contacts there. Now you might be wondering why it should be necessary. After all,we meet people all the time. But when you’re living in a foreign country it can be more difficult, not just because of the language, but because customs may be different. If you’re going to work in the UK you will probably be living in a private house,so it won’t be quite so easy to meet people. But there are still things that you can do to help yourself.First of all,you can get involved in activities in your local community, join a group of some kind. For example, you’ll probably find that there are theatre groups who might be looking for actors, set designers and so on.Or if you like the idea of finding out about local history there’ll be a group for that too. These are just examples. And the best places to get information about things like this are either the town hall or the public library.Libraries in the UK perform quite a broad range of functions nowadays—they’re not just confined to lending books, although that’s their main role of course.
