J.K.Rowling frequently shows there is magic every day.Her HarryPotter series has helped people through times of stress and depression and she is always there to deliver wise words of encouragement.
She is one celebrity who is very active on Twitter. So when a single dad named Matt Burke sent her a message thanking her for the series, she noticed. Her series had helped strengthen his relationship with his 9-year-old daughter Bailey.
He included a link to his article titled Being a Broke Parent. He explained how he hadn’t found a level of financial stability that allowed him to pay bills on time and take his daughter on more activities and events. The family also doesn’t have the Internet or TV,which means there’s no “digital babysitter” and he has to rely on his own creative ways to bond with his daughter.Since he received the series, the main thing that has occupied them these days is reading books together.
Burke admits that he thought he was “too cool” for the books when they first came out and he was in his twenties, but he’s loving reading them now.“We switch off chapter by chapter reading them out loud,” Burke explains.“This not only allows her to get more used to reading aloud in front of someone, but it gets me directly involved in something she loves, and it gives me the chance to be very dramatic when I read my chapters and bring myself into the characters in the book, which has proven to be a ton of fun.”
After hearing Burke’s story,Rowling said how honored she was when Harry Potter was a part of his family’s life and offered Burke more books.Besides, people are also offering to send Burke more books as gifts. For Burke, this experience, far more than gifts, will be what he treasures.

English is full of colourful phrases to describe shyness.Someone shy might be called shrinking violet or a wallflower, while for especially nervous types we have the curious expression: they wouldn’t say “boo” to a goose.
None of these are traditionally seen as positive descriptions, even if you like geese. In a culture of go-getting high achievers, shy people don’t come first.Or that’s what the self-help industry would have you believe.Bookshops are filled with vital tomes(大部头书籍)that promise to help beat social fears and find success in life, love and business. That is why one book,Shrinking Violets: A Field Guide to Shyness, bucks the trend. It became a sudden success across English-language media recently for its new take-on shyness.
Author Joe Moran says that despite struggling with shyness and longing for loneliness all his life, being shy can also be “a gift”.Freed from the constant urge to participate and compete in social situations, people are liberated to look at the world in new ways, and gain fresh insights.
Indeed, many of the world’s great thinkers and artists are introverts(内向的人).Scientists Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein preferred their own company;actress Keira Knightley often finds herself tongue-tied at parties;and Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling claims she used to be too nervous to even borrow a pen.
Moran told BBC Future, “I think shyness probably does turn you into an amateur anthropologist(人类学家),really—you are more likely to be an observer.”
So,while extroverts make all the noise, they don’t necessarily have the best ideas.
If you’re shy, you’ve probably known this for a long time. You just don’t shout about it.
25.What does the underlined phrase “bucks the trend” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Goes against the trend and succeeds.
B.Changes the public idea completely.
C.Becomes unpopular and unaccepted.
D.Becomes the major concern of people.

A.To point out the harm shyness brings.
B.To disconnect shyness and success.
C.To show the reasons for shyness.
D.To prove shyness contributes to science.
27.What is the author’s attitude towards shyness
A.Opposed. B.Indifferent.
C.Supportive. D.Critical.

My wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pictures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.
Just a few minutes later,I heard my daughter shouting,“Dad!The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back—the sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day.The bear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.
I held my camera tripod(三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me.Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight.I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.
Even so,this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.
The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod.I raised my left arm to protect my face;the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side.My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.
Drawing back my free hand,I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away.I was actually wrestling(扭打) with the bear at this point. Then,as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attack. The first time I felt panic.Apparently satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went.My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could hardly have been better.I’m proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day, when I was walking through the empty street in Stanislau,California,I saw an old man stand in front of a little house. He invited me in.In the house,I saw a bright rug(小地毯) on the clean floor.Pictures hung all around the room.On the little tables there were books and vases full of flowers.
The pleasure I felt in my heart must have shown on my face.
“Yes,” he smiled,“it is all her work.Everything in this room has the touch of her hands. She is nineteen. We were married just six months ago. You’ll see her tonight!”
“Where is she now ” I asked.
“Oh,she went to visit her parents,”the man sighed.“They live forty miles from here. She has been away for two weeks and she will be back soon.”
The man told me his name was Henry. Then we talked about many different things, but mainly about her.
In the evening,we had a visitor. He was a grey-haired gold miner named Tom.“I just came for a few minutes to ask when she is coming home,”he explained.“Is there any news ”
“Oh yes.I got a letter.Would you like to hear it ”the old man replied, taking a yellowed letter out of his pocket and started reading to us.
It was full of loving messages to him and to other people—their close friends and neighbours. When the man finished,he looked at his friend.“Oh,Tom!You always cry when I read a letter from her.I’m going to tell her this time!”
“No,you must not do that,Henry,” Tom said.“I am getting old.And any little sorrow makes me cry.I really hope she would be here tonight.”
Then he started to give Henry glasses of wine. When I reached for one,he stopped me.After Henry emptied the last glass,he got very drunk and fell fast asleep.
“His wife has been dead for nineteen years,” Tom said, looking into my eyes.
“Dead ”I whispered.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Tom explained that she went to see her parents after they got married.
Then Tom went to the old letter that Henry had just read to us.

My first job was in Jessif,in the east of Poland.I was promised that I wasn’t going to have to teach any beginners or any little children because it was my first job.I was promptly given the beginners. On my first day of teaching I was given a book which said,“Ah!Go into the classroom and say hello to the children and they’ll all say hello back to you and wave.” I walked into a class of five four-year-olds,followed by all their mothers and grandmothers and I said“Hello” and they all burst into tears.I spent half the lesson trying to get them to say “Hello” to each other and stop them from crying while all the grandmothers stood around and stared at me.I finally finished off my singing Happy Princess Song, all on my own, with crying children to accompany me.It was one of the worst days of my life.I could feel the same with all the children though, because I wanted to sit on the floor and cry with them by the end of it.Then I realized that teaching kids was never going to be my career.I had some other classes as well but quit soon after that and moved onto adults who cry slightly less.Yeah, that was my first teaching experience. Not the best.
