Development of Lantern Festival
There exist many different beliefs about the origin of the Lantern Festival. But one thing for sure is that it had something to do with religious worship.
Origin of Lantern Festival
One of the most popular legends tells us that it was a time to worship Taiyi(太一神), the God of Heaven in ancient times. The God of Heaven controlled the destiny of the human world. He had sixteen dragons at his beck and call and he could decide when to inflict drought, storms, plague upon human beings.
Starting from Qinshihuang, all the subsequent emperors ordered splendid ceremonies to ask Taiyi to bring
favorable climate to their country.
Origin of Lantern Festival
Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty directed special attention to this event. In 104 BC, he proclaimed it one of the most important celebrations and the ceremony would last throughout the night.
Development of Lantern Festival
By the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, the lantern displays would last three days. The emperor also lifted the curfew(宵禁令), allowing the people to enjoy the festival lanterns day and night.
Development of Lantern Festival
In the Song Dynasty, the festival was celebrated for five days. Colorful glass and even jade were used to make lanterns, with figures from folk tales painted on the lanterns.
Development of Lantern Festival
The largest Lantern Festival celebration took place in the Ming Dynasty. Emperor Chengzu had the downtown area set aside as a center for displaying the lanterns.
Development of Lantern Festival
Eat “Yuanxiao”
The Lantern Festival has its own special dish --“Yuan Xiao” , or sweet dumpling soup. Although the sweet dumplings differ in name and recipe from the North to South, they are always made with glutinous rice flour as the outside. The filling is usually composed of different kinds of fruit kernels and sugar.
Customs of Lantern Festival
“Guessing lantern riddles”
“Guessing lantern riddles” is an essential part of the festival. Lantern owners write riddles on a piece of paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have solutions to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to check the answers. If they are right, they will get a little gift.
Customs of Lantern Festival
In the daytime of the festival, performance such as a dragon dance, a lion dance, a yangge dance, walking on stilts and beating drums while dancing will be staged. On the night when the first full moon enters the New Year, people become really intoxicated by the imposing fireworks and bright moon in the sky.

By Ouyang Xiu
Last year on the Lantern Festival night,
The colorful lanterns shone as daylight.
On top of the willows the moon crept,
With my lover, the evening date I kept.
