1. Do you know what a resolution is
It’s a kind of promise. Most of the
time, we make promises to other people. (“Mom, I promise I’m going to tidy my room when I get back from school.”) However, promises you make to yourself are resolutions, and the most common kind is New Year’s resolutions. __________ When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps them to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans.

2. There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. __________ Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. __________

promise 此处用作名词，意为“承诺；诺言”。
常用短语： make a promise/promises “做出承诺；许下诺言“； keep a promise ”信守诺言“； break a promise ”违背诺言“。
If you make a promise,you should keep it.
如果你许诺了，你就应该遵守诺言。

2. When we make resolution at the beginning of the year,we hope that we are going to improve our lives. 当我们新年伊始下决心的时候，我们希望会改善我们的生活。（课本第45页2b）
（1）at the beginning of 意为“在......开始”，其中beginning 作名词，意为“开头；开端”。
At the beginning of this term,I joined a swimming club.
在这个学期开始时，我加入了一个游泳俱乐部。
He has made a good beginning .
他已经开了一个好头。
【拓展】由beginning构成的其他短语
①at the beginning 意为“起初；一开始”，相当于in the beginning。
At/In the beginning,she worked in a middle school. 起初，她在一所中学工作。
②from beginning to end 意为“从头到尾；自始至终”。
He read the letter again from beginning to end. 他又从头到尾把那封信读了一遍。
（2）improve 意为“改进；改善”，既可作及物动词，又可作不及物动词。
The important thing is how we can improve our studies. 重要的是怎样才能改善我们的学习。

write down 意为“写下；记录下”，是“动词+副词”构成的短语。名词做宾语时，可位于down之前或之后；
代词做宾语时，必须放在write与down之间。

有类似用法的短语还有：
cut down 砍倒； put on 穿上； put up 张贴，搭建；
turn on 打开； turn off 关闭。

4. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. 很多决心是关于自我提升的。（课本第45页2b）
have to do with 意为“关于；与......有关系”，相当于have something to do with。
其反义短语为have nothing to do with,意为“与......没有关系；无关”。
What does it have to do with me 这与我何干？
The development of a nation usually has something to do with education. 一个国家的发展通常与教育有关。
I don’t know him at all and I have something to do with him. 我根本不认识他，而且我和他没关系。

5. Some people might say they are going to take up a new hobby ...有些人可能会说他们将开始培养某种业余爱好...（课本第45页2b）
take up 意为“学着做；开始做”。
Mr.Depp has taken up golf. 德普先生学起打高尔夫球了。
【拓展】 take up的其他含义
①take up 意为“占用（时间或空间)”。
We shouldn’t take up our teachers’ time. 我们不应该占用老师的时间。
②take up 意为“接受；答应”。
All the employees took up the offer. 所有的雇员都接受了这个提议。

6. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. 有时这些决心可能会太难而无法实现。（课本第45页2b）
too...to...意为“太......而不能”，too后面接形容词，to是不定式符号。该短语在形式上是肯定结构，表达的却是否定意义。
The room is too small to live in. 这个房间太小，住不下。
【拓展】 too...to...句式的转换
①too ...to...=so/such that
The box is too heavy to carry.=The box is so heavy that he can’t carry it. 箱子太重了，这个小男孩搬不动。
②too ...to...=not...enough to
The child is too young to go to school.=The child is not old enough to go to school. 这个小孩太小，不能去上学。

7. To question the idea of making resolutions 质疑下决心的想法（课本第46页2c）
question 在此处作动词，意为“表示疑问；怀疑；提问；质询”。
I don’t question your ability. 我不怀疑你的能力。
【拓展】question还可以作名词，意为“问题”。
Can I ask you some questions 我可以问你一些问题吗？

8. To give the meaning of resolution 给出“决心”的含义（课本第46页2c）
the meaning of 意为“......的意思”。其中meaning作名词，意为“意义；意思”，其动词形式为mean，意为“意思是”。
