在远古时候，有一只叫作“年”的猛兽，每年除夕这天都会到村子里捕食家禽家畜。村民们深受其害。后来，人们发现“年”害怕红颜色，火光和噼噼啪啪的响声。除夕这天，人们就在家门口挂上红颜色的桃木板，在路上架起燃烧的柴火堆，用木棍不停的敲敲打打，发出巨大声响。“年”果然被吓住了，灰溜溜的钻回山洞。
人们平平安安地度过了除夕夜，第二天，兴高采烈地走出家门互相道贺，杀鸡宰羊，饮酒唱歌，一起庆祝。这种习俗一代一代传下来，就形成了过年这一传统。
