Lesson 47: I Made It!
Ⅰ. Analysis of teaching material:
In this unit, students will learn how to focus on identifying their own strengths and weaknesses. They will learn to analyze and discuss their interests and dreams and find out what makes each one of them unique. They will also learn to address things they want to improve on and explore different ways of improvement. Students will practice giving advice based on encouragement and evaluation.
Ⅱ. Analysis of students’ background:
The students are the eighth graders, and they are interested in stories, and have the ability of thinking more deeply.
Ⅲ. Teaching objectives:
1.Aims of the knowledge:
①Enable the students to handle the target words and phrases in the text.
②Enable the students to handle the basic reading skills.
2. Aims of the abilities:
①Enable the students to master the quickest way to know about a text with the help of skimming.
②Enable the students to improve their reading speed with the help of scanning.
③Enable the students to better understand the writer’s writing purpose.
3. Aims of the emotion:
①To foster the students’ sense of loving and helping the people around them.
②To encourage the students to make improvement.
Ⅳ. Teaching emphasis and difficulties:
1. To make the students learn about three important reading skills.
2. The useful words and phrases and task-based reading skills.

Ⅶ. Teaching procedures:
Step 1: Warming-up:
Show the students an e-mail from my student, Tan Le. He has some trouble in studying English. The students and I will work together to find out Tan Le’s problem.
Step 2: Presentation:
1. Show them the new words and phrases by using some sentences.
2. Train them to know the meanings of the words and phrases from the context, with the help of word-building and some pictures.
3. Use the skimming way to read the text. Students can know the main idea just by reading three parts: the title, the first paragraph, the last paragraph. And after skimming, let the students try to predict what the story is about.
4. Read the text for the second time with the method of scanning. The students just need to read the questions first and try to find out the direct information related to these“W” “H” questions.

①Why did Peter look sad
②Who helped Peter
③What book did Peter receive
④Where did Peter come from
⑤What did Peter do after accepting the challenge
⑥How was Peter’s spelling at last
5. Read the text for the third time with the method of careful reading. It aims to let the students have a better understanding of the writer’s writing purpose.
6. Guide the students to translate a long and difficult sentence little by little.
7. To check the students if they have fully understood the text by retelling work (put some key words on the blackboard to help them).
8. Use a chart to help the students know Peter better and motivate them to perform better in their future life.
Step 3 : Cultivation of Emotion and Attitudes:
Show some pictures of the successful people with strong mind. And encourage the students to bravely face their problems and work hard to make it. Use a chart to show them how to approach their goals step by step.
Step 4: Homework:
Ask the students to write back to Tan Le instead of the teacher to give him some advice.
