Cala didn’t like us.Any of us.We didn’t do anything to offend her and she didn’t know us but that didn’t matter, she still didn’t like us.
As new teachers in the Emirati school,we Westerners greeted her every day.She ignored us.She came into our rooms and bypassed us as she shook hands with all the non-Westerners.Whenever we saw her,she avoided eye contact with us.Eventually,we stopped trying to befriend her.
I won’t say her nationality but her friends had been fired from the school,we had been employed in their places and that was enough for her to have nothing to do with us.
Well after 16 months in the school we had a secret-friend gifting. To my surprise,I drew her name from the glass jar and that meant she was my secret pal.My role was to buy her a gift and say something about her when we publicly acknowledged who our secret pal was.
I decided to gift her a coloured bangle(手镯).I added a postcard and wrote “Love and Blessings,Rose-Marie.”
Then came the day.We all gathered in the meeting room. When you received your gift, you said a few kind words about your secret friend and passed the gift to them. What could I say Everyone knew she didn’t like the Westerners. She taught music in the school so I said “My secret pal is someone who brings music to our ears every day.”She came forward with a huge warm smile. She hugged me and kissed me on both cheeks and accepted my gift.
Since then, she smiles often. We hug and shake hands when we meet.I have seen her wear my gift several times and I am so pleased.

You see your phone light up from the corner of your eye and quickly reach for it.What started as a simple notification(通知) check snowballs into an hour-long period as you look through rows of notifications and endless social media feeds.
This is by design.Tech companies such as Google and Facebook have spent years working to make consumer technology as addictive as possible. After all, time spent with their products could equal big profits for the company.
However, that’s starting to change.Apple takes action with the introduction of tools in its new operating system aimed at informing users to better manage their smartphone usage and parental controls that allow parents to better monitor and control their children’s phone time.
Google also offers a “Wind Down” feature to set at bedtime, which automatically puts the phone into “Do Not Disturb”.No notifications will show up on your phone, and losing all colour on-screen is certainly a cause to put your phone away.
There are still no clear guidelines on what causes tech addiction, but it’s a growing concern likely on the minds of parents everywhere as they see their kids’ faces constantly glued inches away from a screen. And everywhere you go,you’re all but guaranteed to see people buried in their phones.
Apart from Apple and Google,Facebook deserves a fair amount of blame,as CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged in a blog post earlier this year. The social network announced plans to roll out changes aimed at making interactions more meaningful.
“By making these changes,I expect the time people spend on Facebook will go down,”Zuckerberg said.“But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable. And if we do the right thing,I believe that will be good for our community and our business over the long term too.”

It’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes. His silence about his feelings and thoughts made him mysterious and hard to see through. You could never break his hard shell and get to know him.And he seemed to want to stay that way too.
But a year ago when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit,I needed my dad to pull back the curtain so I could see him as real and accessible.I was facing serious problems and I wanted to know whether he had faced them before and how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine.In desperation,it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key,so I wrote him one, telling him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer,if he felt like it.
Two weeks later,it showed up in my inbox:a much-thought,three-page letter.Dad,a 68-year-old retired technologist and grandfather of four, had carefully considered my message, and crafted a response. He mentioned his lost love, the foolish mistake he made in career and the stupid pride he had between him and his parents. He comforted me that “life will still find its right track despite many of its twists and turns”.
I closed the email and started to cry, because I wished I had opened up earlier but was grateful it wasn’t too late.I cried because at 33,in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end,it was so simple:I just had to hit “Send”.
We’ve since had many email exchanges. This increasing communication opened a door into his world. My problems haven’t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better has made the tough thing more manageable and life sweeter. It’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes, but I’m glad I found a way to talk to mine.

We’ve all been there:in a lift,in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us,deeply focused on their smartphones or,worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence.
What’s the problem It’s possible that we all have compromised conversational intelligence. It’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s awkward and challenging,or we think it’s annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble.Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits.
“Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can’t forget that deep relationships wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for casual conversation.Small talk is the grease(润滑剂) for social communication,”says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast.“Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains.“The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”
In a 2021 study,Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC,invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction(互动) with its waiter;the other,to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience.“It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,” says Dunn.“But interactions with peripheral(外围的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging,a bond with others.Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk.“Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says.
12.What is important for successful small talk according to Carducci
A.Showing good manners.
B.Relating to other people.
C.Focusing on a topic.
D.Making business deals.

How to Communicate With a Deaf Person
Communicating with a deaf person doesn’t have to be as difficult as it might seem. The trick is to be patient, straightforward, and to remember that deaf people communicate visually.
Method1:Starting Your Conversation
1 You can do this by moving into the person’s field of vision and waving from a polite distance,or by tapping the person gently on the shoulder.
Position yourself carefully.Make sure that the light in the room is shining directly onto your face, and that you’re not standing with your back to a light. 2
Find out how the person prefers to communicate. Some deaf people are better lip-readers than others. Some deaf people may prefer to write back and forth or to use an interpreter.Man interactions between the deaf and the hearing require a combination of these methods. 3
Method2:Communicating Through Lip-reading.
Keep your sentences simple and use plain language. 4 The more complex your phrasing and vocabulary, the more likely your deaf companion is to miss something.
When someone else is speaking, don’t turn away from the deaf person in your group. 5 You don’t have to look at the deaf person while someone else is talking, but try to make sure your face is visible.
A.Get the person’s attention.
B.It’s important not to talk too quickly.
C.Or,they’ll miss parts of the conversation.
D.If so,it’ll make them feel left out of the conversation.
E.Stand directly in front of the person,at a normal distance.
F.The best way to know which methods are most effective is to ask.
G.Try not to be too difficult when using your words in the beginning.

第二节 概要写作(20分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Most Americans love Chinese food, whether during in a restaurant or from those little, folded white take-out boxes. However, the Chinese food found in most casual Chinese restaurants in the U.S.is very far different from the authentic cuisine eaten daily in China.
One main difference between authentic Chinese food and the food offered in American casual Chinese restaurants is the cooking methods used. The food found in Western Chinese restaurants is mainly cooked through frying.Though traditional Chinese food may be cooked using frying methods,it is not the main way such cuisine is cooked. Methods such as stewing(炖),baking, steaming, boiling, and even fermenting(发酵) are commonly used.
Another big difference between authentic and Westernised Chinese food is the ingredients(食材) used.Westernised Chinese food focuses dishes with a main meat;ingredients like rice and vegetables are sides(配菜) or fillers. With authentic Chinese dishes, the opposite is true.Ingredients like vegetables, rice, noodles and soybeans are those that are most often used.Westernised Chinese food features meats that are acceptable for eating in Western culture.Meats are usually beef, pork,or chicken. Most Western cultures are pretty conservative(传统的) in the meats they eat.Authentic Chinese cuisine uses a wider variety of protein sources, like tofu, and its other meat sources would seem unpleasant to most Westerners, such as snake, chicken feet and duck blood.
Then how do the changes come about America was once the melting pot, with populations from different continents joining together. Most cultural groups brought their customs and their cuisine, both changed and adapted over the years. The history of Westernised food started in San Francisco in the mid-1800s with Chinese immigrants who came to the U.S.looking for work. Many Chinese workers had trouble finding work and opened restaurants to make a living.Eventually,Chinese cuisine made its way into the mainstream and was changed along the way to reflect Western tastes and regional influences.

【概要写作】
Although the majority of Americans are in favour of Chinese food, there exists huge difference between the Chinese food served in American Chinese restaurants and that enjoyed every day by Chinese. The cooking methods used contribute to one of the major differences.Besides, different ingredients used can explain why authentic Chinese food is so different from that Westernised. To sum up,what accounts for the characteristics of Westernised Chinese food today is the influence and reflection of local flavour.
