Make Up Your Mind to Succeed
Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because “everyone’s a winner”.And their report cards sounded more positive than ever before. As a result,Stanford University professor Carol Dweck,PhD,calls them “the overpraised generation”.
Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mindsets that have a great effect on how we react to it.Here’s how they work:
A fixed mindset is grounded in the belief that talent is genetic—you’re a born artist, point guard,or numbers person. The fixed mindset believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult,it’s quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.
On the other hand,a growth mindset believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible.Because the ego(自尊)isn’t on the line as much, the growth mindset sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty,it’s quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact,it enjoys this experience.
We are all born with growth mindsets.(Otherwise,we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mindsets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise.Dweck’s book,Mindset:The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional programme explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.

He is a lesson to every boy who ever picked up a basketball and dreamed that it would change his life.
The lights were never brighter and the crowds were never bigger for a home-grown sports hero than they were a quarter-century ago for Ray Hall. But his athletic achievements,as impressive as they are,are to my mind not what is most admirable about the man.Known as “Sugar Ray” in his teens,Hall was rated among the country’s top 25 high school basketball players. An inner-city kid from a solid family,Hall took on the challenge of lifting Canisius College—still recovering from its failure—back to respectability, rejecting more favourable offers. His status brought more pressure than any 18-year-old should have to handle. However,I watched him mature into the player who led Canisius back to daylight.
After college Hall played professionally in Italy and Greece for over 10 years until a car accident at 32 ended his basketball career. The news that he would never play again shocked Hall but unlike so many others he was ready for life after basketball. When I met Hall—still fit at 46—for lunch Monday,he wore a cut-sharp gray suit, designer tie and blazing white shirt that screamed Success.“That was always the question—when the cheers end, where do you go Who do you turn to ” he said.“It starts and ends with that person in the mirror.”
Hall got the concept of academics—first from his parents. He graduated from Canisius a semester early.“No matter how good an athlete you are,you are just one injury away from losing it all,” he said.“But if you take care of things academically, you are prepared until you leave this Earth.”
For the past 14 years,he has been in a computer sales job at Ingram Micro. He married his college sweetheart. They have three kids and a nice house in the suburbs. He figured out early what others learn too late:Athletics is part of a journey, not the destination.Congratulations,Ray,you made it.In more ways than one.

A.a,c,b,e,d B.a,c,e,b,d

A few hours after my first mission, returning to Earth on the space shuttle Endeavour,I completed all of my medical tests after flight, met with NASA officials, and reunited with my family. Finally,I was alone in my office room in astronaut crew quarters at the Kennedy Space Centre, exhausted and ready for bed.And I did what anyone does when they return to their hotel room on a business trip:I turned on the TV.The television news started up:Such and such had happened, people were shocked, blah blah blah.Sports scores.Silly commercials.
It didn’t take more than a minute before I had to turn it off.It felt like my body was rejecting all this input, just as it would reject an organ donation that had the wrong blood type. All of this noise was just completely foreign to who I was—or,more appropriately, who I had become.A few hours before,I had been orbiting Earth, seeing our planet from space, flying the most amazing machine ever built by human hands, working with a team that was the absolute success of human. And now here in my room watching what was being sold as news, and with my new-found perspective,I just could not stomach it.My world view was changed forever in a profound(深刻的) way.
The biggest change by far and the one for which I will always be most grateful is this big-picture perspective. That will stick with me for the rest of my life.
Whenever I feel the pressure of modern life, the stress about work,or worry about the future,I remember my time in the space station.Back to seeing the sun set.Or watching our galaxy rise on the horizon.Or seeing a sea of lightning flash a hundred times a second.Or simply back to floating weightlessly.
When I’m there in my mind and realise how many billions of these beautiful sunsets there have been and will be in the future, the cares of the world just don’t seem that pressing. It goes that,“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Living daily life down here on the planet is so much better with this attitude!

At 39 weeks pregnant most women would only be thinking of racing to hospital. But not Amber Miller, who set off to run the Chicago Marathon while expecting her second child any day.
As she neared the final stage of the race, she began to feel pain in the stomach. But the determined athlete managed to cross the finish line in 6 hours and 25 minutes.
Unbelievably the Chicago race was not even baby June’s first marathon—Miller ran the Wisconsin Marathon earlier this year, four months pregnant. She also ran another marathon when she was about four months pregnant with her son,Caleb,19 months.
Although there was extra weight, the seasoned runner’s time was just 3 hours off her personal best.
Miller began to feel pain near the end of the race, but she was not sure if it was labour (分娩),because she typically feels some pain when she runs while pregnant. After her race her husband drove her to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield where she gave birth to the healthy 7 pounds,13 ounce baby.
Miller decided to run because she and her husband had already signed up for the race. The athletic mother said she experienced an enthusiastic welcome from crowds as she ran along. But the devoted runner, who had completed eight marathons, admitted that she did get a few strange looks along the course.
“I know what I can handle. This is something I’ve been doing for a long time,” the experienced marathon runner said.
June was born at 10:29 pm on Sunday night after seven hours’ labour.“She’s absolutely perfect,” Miller said.“We are extremely happy, but very tired.”
After her surprising double achievement,Miller says she is planning to take some time off to concentrate on being a full-time mom.
12.What is the name of Miller’s kid born right after the Chicago Marathon
A.Caleb. B.June.
C.Amber. D.Wisconsin.

C.Miller knew she was going to give birth at the end of the race.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Distance runners often worry about “hitting the wall” during training or races, when negative thoughts become so overpowering that they make it difficult to continue. 1 At that time, the body’s glycogen (糖原) supplies become exhausted. As a result, many runners feel exhausted and discouraged, slow their pace, have trouble focusing and want to quit or walk. 2 Here are a few sports psychologist-approved techniques to try, which could have major benefits for an athlete’s performance and well-being.
·Make a motivational song list.Distracting yourself with some great tunes can help you make it to the finish line faster. 3
·Try the partner system.A running partner can keep you motivated and on-track,and might even improve your performance, research shows.
· 4 A study on weight-lifters found that mental practices can be as effective as physical practice, resulting in actual muscle increases.Visualising your if-then plan, for instance, could improve your chance of success.
·Try “attention narrowing”. 5 Last year,an NYU study found that focusing on an object on the horizon makes the distance feel shorter, and leads runners to go faster and perform better than those who let their minds wander.
With these helpful strategies, your next personal record might be just around the corner.
A.Plan what to do.
B.Visualise achieving your goal.
C.Finding ways to move past those kinds of experiences is very vital.
D.“Hitting the wall” typically happens around 20 miles in a marathon.
E.Runners who focus their eyes on an object in the distance get there faster.
F.There is evidence that saying motivational things to oneself benefits a lot.
G.Studies show athletes run, bike and swim farther and faster when listening to music.

第二节 故事续写(25分)
Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed.A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example.Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner.Ronny said excitedly,“Some people are fighting!Let’s go and have a look!” But Henry refused,“It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and don’t get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys.Henry had to go home alone and didn’t think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on,they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Ronny for his rude behaviour, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus,he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However,Ronny didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore.Instead,he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward.Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

Chen Ruolin, who took up diving at the age of four and had been training hard and overcoming all kinds of difficulty, won two gold medals at the 2012 London Olympic Games. It is her great determination that led her to success.
As far as I am concerned, determination is very important in our lives. It not only encourages us to move forward, but also enables us to face difficulty bravely. Thus we can stick to our goals and succeed. It is not easy to cultivate determination.Above all,we must hold a strong belief that everyone has the potential to achieve success. We shouldn’t be discouraged when faced with setbacks.
Actually, failure can teach us a lot. What’s more, there are quite a few people with this spirit around us.We can learn a lot from them.
【文章续写】
Paragraph1:
A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. That afternoon after school,Ronny was bathing with some of his new friends in the river happily.Suddenly,he was stuck in the mud and couldn’t get out.He struggled hard but he was still trapped. He screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could. They were so scared and did not even try to help him.
Paragraph2:
At that moment,Henry happened to pass by.He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon as possible.Seeing Ronny was almost drowned,Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesitation. He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself,he brought Ronny to the shore in time.Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.
