The old man walked with a cane (拐杖) slowly into the restaurant. His poor jacket, patched (打补丁的) trousers, and worn-out shoes made him stand out among the people.
He walked towards a table by the window. A young waitress watched him and ran over to him, saying, “Here, Sir. Let me help you with that chair.”
Without a word, he nodded(点头) to show his thanks. She pulled the chair away from the table. Supporting him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and get comfortably seated. Then she pushed the table up close to him, and leaned (斜靠) his cane against the table where he could reach it.
In a soft, clear voice he said, “Thank you, Miss.”
“You’re welcome, Sir.” She answered. “My name is Mary. I’ll be back in a moment. If you need anything, just wave at me.”
After he finished a hearty meal, Mary brought him the change, helping him up from his chair and out from behind the table. She handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door. Holding the door open for him, she said, “Come back and see us, Sir!”
He nodded a thank-you and said softly with a smile, “You are very kind!”
When Mary went to clean the table, she found a note on a napkin(餐巾纸). Under the napkin was a 100-dollar bill. 三、根据短文内容回答问题。
In the early nineteenth century, people didn’t use stamps. They had to pay postage(邮资)
when they received letters. It is expensive because the post offices had to send many people to
get the postage.
Rowland Hill was the first to use stamps in 1850s. He thought it would be much easier for
people to use stamps. They could go to the post office to buy stamps and put them on envelopes(信封) before they sent the letters. Also, post offices could just put seals(印章) on the stamps so that people couldn’t use the stamps again. In this way, post offices did not need to send postmen to get the postage. It only needed fewer postmen to send letters.
Almost every town in the United States has a post office. Some are very small, and you may
also find them in the corner of a shop. Others are large buildings. They are open five days a week and on Saturday morning. From Monday to Friday they are usually open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
If you know how much the postage is for your letter, you can buy stamps at any windows.
In some post offices you can buy them from machines(机器). Stamps are sold at many different prices. If you are not sure how much postage is for your letter, you can ask the clerk(职员). He or she will give you the stamps you need. If you send your letters far away, write on the envelope that you want them to go by air or use an airmail envelope.
At a post office you can also buy postcards. A postcard is cheaper than a letter. The
postcards that you buy at a post office do not have pictures. However, they are also not to be sent outside the countries.
