In the history of the United States, Clara Barton was a big name. She spent her life caring for others. Thanks to her, the American Red Cross was born.
Clara Barton was born in 1821 in the US. When she was 10 years old, her elder brother, David, got seriously injured (受伤的). Clara cared for him for two years. Through this experience she found out that she felt great when she cared for others. Soon,
Clara began taking care of injured animals. Neighbours (邻居) began bringing their pets to her. And, almost always, she made them better.
When Clara was older, she became a nurse in the American Civil War (美国内战) and she helped save hundreds of soldiers. After the Civil War, Clara travelled to Europe. Soon she was caring for soldiers there once again! But this time, she learned about the Red Cross.
Over several years, she has asked four different presidents to bring the Red Cross to America. Thanks to her hard work, one of the presidents agreed with her! And on 21st May 1881, the American Red Cross was born.
