How is the definition of comfort food given in this article
The author’s definition of comfort food is given in both its broadest sense, “any food that makes us feel better”, and in a narrower sense, “a particular type of comfort food”. The author focuses on the narrower definition in the article because comfort food is a complex topic. By defining comfort food in this way, the author makes us aware of the wide range of the subject, but then draws our attention to the aspect of comfort food that he/she will be discussing in this article.
5.教师活动:教师让学生组成小组讨论如何理解文章尾端“It’s food for the soul.”这句话。
How can you understand the sentence
We usually associate food with something our bodies need—it relieves our hunger and satisfies our appetite. However, comfort food not only serves that purpose, but also makes us feel comfortable mentally and emotionally. Since comfort food is closely connected with positive personal experiences and happy memories, eating it can lift one’s spirits. Therefore, comfort food is considered to be food for the soul.
6.学生活动:用60词总结文章主要内容,并在课堂上口语表述。
参考答案:Comfort food, in a broad sense, refers to any food that makes people feel better when they are unwell or in low spirits. This passage is about one specific type of comfort food. Such type of food is highly individual and brings happiness and sense of belonging to people, especially to those who move away from their home country.
7.学生活动:学生组成小组讨论并回答下列问题。
(1)How does the author introduce the topic of comfort food What do you think of this technique
The author introduces the topic with a personal experience from her childhood that illustrates the power comfort food has to lift our spirits, before continuing with a more detailed description of exactly how comfort food does that. This technique is quite effective, as it attracts the reader’s attention and inspires interest in the topic of discussion.
(2)In your opinion, is there any difference between one’s comfort food and favourite food Give your reasons.
I think people’s favourite food and comfort food are different in two ways. First, people’s favourite food can come and go, while their comfort food often remains the same. Second, people’s favourite food often connects with satisfying their hunger, while comfort food usually connects with memories from their childhood.
三、After-reading

2. 教师活动:让学生思考并讨论如下问题:
There is an English saying, “People are what they eat.” What’s your understanding of the saying
参考答案:The food we eat impacts our health directly. If we eat healthy food, we will be healthy, and we will be unhealthy if we constantly eat processed foods like junk food. Our food choices are often reflected in how we look too—our skin may not be clear or we may become overweight, so eating freshly prepared local and seasonal foods are better for keeping us healthy and looking good.
