由关系代词引导限制性定语从句精讲
1. 定义:限制性定语从句(restrictive relative clause)指修饰名词,代词或名词短语的从句,对所修饰的对象加以限制,表示....的(人)或....的(物)。从句不可去掉,一旦去掉,主句的意思则不完整。被修饰的名词、代词或名词短语称为先行项或先行词(antecedent)。
2. 定语从句可由关系代词(relative pronouns)that、which、who、whom、whose引导。
3. 关系代词的用法
(1)先行词指人,关系代词在从句中作主语时,用who,that。
例:He is the man who/that lives next door.
(2)先行词指人,关系代词在从句中作宾语时,用that,who,whom或省略
例:The man(whom/who/that)we have just seen is a famous writer.
(3)先行词指物,关系代词在从句中作主语时,用which,that。
例:The train which/that has just left is for Shenzhen.
(4)先行词指物,关系代词在从句中作宾语时,用which,that或省略。
例:Where is the book(which/that)I bought last week?
(5)关系代词作表语时只能用that,它既可以指人,也可以指代物,但时常省略。
例:He is no longer the man that he use to be.
例:This is no longer the dirty place that it used to be.
(6)关系代词作定语用whose,既可以指人,也可以指物。
例:He is the man whose car was stolen last week.
注意:当先行词指物时,whose+n=the+n+of which=of which the+n
当先行词指人时,whose+n=the+n+of whom=of whom the+n
例:They came to a house whose back wall had broken down
例:He has written a book the name of which I have completely forgotten.
例:He is the boy whose hair is blonde.
(7)介词根据动词与先行词的搭配来选择,介词后的关系代词只能用which,不能省略,不能用that。
例:Is this the magazine about which you were talking just now
(8)固定搭配短语中的介词不能提前。
例:You are the very person(whom/that)we are looking for.
类似固定短语有:look for、look after、take care of、listen to、look forward to、pick up
(9)当先行词是the way意为“方式”“方法”“以...的方式”时,引导定语从句的关系词用that/in which/省略。
例:I didn’t like the way(that/in which) she talked to me.
例:I like the way(that/in which) she smiles.
4. 关系代词的特殊用法
(1)只用that的情况
①先行词为不定代词时:all, everything, anything, nothing, little, much等。
例:He told me everything that he knew.
②先行词被all, any, every, each, much, little, no, some, few修饰时。
例:All the books that you offered have been given out.
③先行词被形容词最高级和序数词修饰时。
例:This is the best film that I have ever seen
④先行词既指人又指物时。
例:We talked about the persons and things that we remembered.
⑤先行词被the only, the very修饰时。
例:He is the only man that I want to see.
⑥句中已有who或which, 为了避免重复时候。
例:Who is the man that is making a speech?
(2)只用which,who,whom的情况
①在非限制性定语从句中,只能用which指物,用who/whom指人。
例:He has a son, who has gone abroad for further study.
②在由“介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句中,只能用which指物,whom指人。
例:I like the person to whom the teacher is talking.
③先行词本身时that,指物时,关系词用which,先行词为those, one, he,指人时,用who。
例:Those who respect others are usually respected by others.
(3)限制性定语从句中,名词前有such,so,as,the same修饰时,关系代词用as,不用which。
例:He is not such a fool as he looks.他不像你看上去那么傻
例:Don’t read such books as you can’t understand.
