Starter unit 2 What’s this in English
(Period 1)
Part One: Analysis of the students(学情分析)
Although the students have learned English for four years in primary school and they have master a few simple words and sentences, most of them lack interests and targets in English learning, which cause them lose confidence and proper methods of English learning. The content of Starter Unit 2 is lively, interesting and close to students’ life. It’s a good chance to stimulate their motivation and interests in English. Meanwhile to lay a solid foundation for further study and guide them to use English into daily life.
Part Two: Teaching Aims(教学目标)
Knowledge Aim: Ss will master the key words of objectives, then grasp the key sentence patterns of identifying objectives in our life.
Ability Aim: Ss will be able to identify things around us, and communicate with each other freely and correctly.
Emotional Aim: To raise Ss’ interests of English-learning, meanwhile develop Ss’ communicative awareness and ability.
Part Three: Teaching Important and Difficult Points(教学重难点)
Important points:
1. Key words: map, cup, ruler, pen, orange, jacket, key, quilt, what, is this, that, a, an...
2. Key sentence patterns: --What’s this/that in English
--It’s a/an _______________
Difficult Points:
1. The pronunciation of certain words like ‘quilt’.
2. The usage of a/an.
Part Five: Teaching procedure(教学步骤)
Step One: Greetings and revision
Review the greetings we learned already.
Step Two: Presentation & Lead-in
1. Guessing game: T will show part of some objectives by PowerPoint and encourage the Ss to guess, the group which give the right answer will get one point. In this way, Ss will lead in our target words by themselves, and have fun at the same time.
2. Surprise: In the end, I’ll show a photo of all the Ss and give them a surprise.
Step Three: Practice
Task One: Key words
1. Read after T
The group which do better will get one point.
2. Bomb game
Round one: Read one by one with one bomb.
Round two: Read random with one bomb.
Round three: Read one by one with invisible bomb.
3. Fast reaction
Round one: T says English, Ss say Chinese.
Round two: T says Chinese, Ss say English.
4. Read after T one more time
Correct the pronunciation.
Task Two: Key sentence patterns
1. Lead in the answer “It’s a/an...”
Round one: T will ask “What’s this in English ” with things like ruler, then guide Ss to answer “It’s a/an ...”
Round two: Joke ... (ask with nothing)
Round three: T will ask “What’s that in English ” with PPT, then
guide Ss to answer “It’s a/an ...”
2. Lead in the questions “What’s this/that in English
I will ask Ss to recall the questions I asked.
Whoever give the right answer will get one point.
Then I’ll write the questions on the blackoard↓

3. We’ll explain the sentence patterns together.
4. Read the sentences after T (with the real things or PPT), I’ll correct Ss’ pronunciation.
Task Three: Listening & Speaking
1. Identify things
I’ll guide Ss to identify things in the picture of 1a (PPT) ,
“Look! It’s a room. There are so many things in the room. What can you see in the room ”...
2. Listen and repeat (2 times)
There is a conversation in the picture, let’s listen and repeat.
3. Set an example (2 times)
I’ll ask one student to make a conversation with me.
4. Pair work
“Now, please work in pairs and make your own conversations like Coco and me. You can use the things in the picture or anything around you.”
3 minutes later, I’ll invite several pairs to present.
Step Four: Summary
1. Summarize what we have learned today.
2. Summarize the PK results. ( praise the winners & encourage the others)
