Read the two emails again and answer the following questions.
(1) Why does Chris introduce himself in the first email but doesn’t do so in the second
Because in the context of the first email, Ms Ma does not know Chris, and
Chris is writing on behalf of the school. It is polite and essential to introduce
yourself when you communicate with a person for the first time, more so if you
are writing on behalf of an organization. On the other hand, Tony is Chris’s
close friend, so a self-introduction is not necessary.
Read the two emails again and answer the following questions.
(2) Why does Chris employ a formal language style in the first email
(3) Why does Chris use an informal language style in the second email
The first email is written in a polite, respectful manner. It is formal because
inviting an expert to attend a school event is a formal situation where politeness and respect are essential.
The second email sounds friendly, cheerful and encouraging. It is informal
because when writing to a friend, people tend to be casual and less serious,
which is good for maintaining a friendly and close relationship.

What contributed to the success of the Law Day
The Law Day was a success thanks to the following three factors.
First, the event included various interesting and meaningful activities.
Second, the organizers did a good job inviting experts and police officers, who presented engaging and inspiring activities.
Third, the students were all ready and willing to learn, and their passion
about this event contributed to its success.
Composition: Write a short thank-you email to Alice Ma after the Law Day event (By using appropriate formal language)
Dear Ms Ma,
I am writing to express my gratitude to you for attending our Law Day on Monday,
12 June.
Your speech provided our students with inspiring and practical knowledge about
the law profession. The useful information you shared about your career path was
greatly appreciated by the students. Your speech was indeed the motivating factor
that convinced us to hold the event again next year.
Once again, we would like to acknowledge your valuable contribution to our Law
Day and anticipate inviting you again next year.
Yours sincerely,
Chris Yu
