Step 1 Warming-up
Watch the video and talk about the population problem in group.
T: Hello, everyone. Today we’ll start a new Module. Now let’s watch the video firstly and then talk about the solutions for this phenomenon.

Step 2 Pre-listening
1. Learn the new words and expressions.
(1) Learn the new words and expressions by reading aloud together.
(2) Let Ss stand up and read the new words and expressions one after another, and correct their pronunciations.
2. Work on Activity 1.
(1) Ask Ss to talk about the picture using the words in the box in groups.
(2) Invite some Ss to share their discussion.

3. Work on Activity 2.
(1) Play the recording and ask Ss to choose the correct answer.

【设计意图】本部分的听力活动主要是培养学生听大意和辨听大数字的能力。笔记练习旨在培养学生捕捉细节信息的能力。短文填空帮助学生进一步掌握对话内容。
3. Lear the language points.
(1) I’m preparing some notes for a report called “Our growing population”.
prepare … for … 表示“为……准备……”。
(2) The population of China is about 1.37 billion.
population 意为“人口”,用large 或small来修饰。 population是集合名词,没有复数形式,做主语时要用单数形式。
(3) That causes a lot of problems, such as too much traffic and noise.
too much意为“太多”,其后接不可数名词。
辨析:noise, voice 与 sound
(4) That’s almost one fifth of the world’s population, that is 7 billion.
one fifth意为“五分之一”。表达分数时,用基数词表示分子,序数词表示分母。当分子大于1时,分母的序数词用复数。分数做主语时,谓语动词在数上与分数后的名词保持一致。
(5) The population of China is about 1.37 billion.
billion 数词,意为“十亿”。在英语中,hundred, thousand, million和billion前面有具体数字时,它们都要用单数形式;但是当与of搭配使用时,它们都必须用复数形式,表示概数,而且不能与具体的数字连用。
【设计意图】学习课文中出现的语法点,帮助学生更好地理解课文并让学生学会运用这些语法点。
4. Work on Activity 4.
(1) Ask Ss to read these sentences and choose the correct answer individually.
(2) Check the answers as a class.
(3) Ask Ss to use these words (birth, huge, increase, hang on, notes, problem, report, billion) to make sentences in groups.
