第四部分 写作
第一节 应用文
参考范文:
With increasing pressure from the exams, more and more students in our school have to sacrifice the time for sports to prepare for exams, because good grades are so important for our future development. We only have one PE class a week. Obviously it’s not enough. Actually, most of the students are eager to take part in sports, but we are so occupied with our study.
In my view, important as it is for us to have a better performance in the exams, exercise is equally vital. Without a strong body we could achieve nothing in our life. I hope all students can reorganize the importance of healthy bodies and try to build up our bodies as well.
第二节 读后续写
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Sadie thought about her mom’s words and returned to her room. Considering for a while, she took the story she started last month from her desk drawer and began to write. Some scenes she took down were so interesting that she laughed out loud. When she stopped and looked at the clock, she found she’d been writing for 30 minutes. Sadie decided to go outside for a breath of fresh air. With her mom’s permission, Sadie got on her bike and rode slowly down the sidewalk. It felt great! Much to her surprise, scenery along the path was breathtaking, which used to escape her notice when she hung out with friends.
Paragraph 2:
As she rode back home, Sadie ran toward her mom excitedly. “Did you find someone to play with outside ” Mom asked. “No, I took your advice. I rode my bike by myself.” “Wendy called back while you were outside, asking you to go swimming tonight. You will have a pleasant evening,” Sadie’s mom said. “Well, I think I’ll finish my story instead. I can go swimming with her another day,” Sadie said with a wink. “And it’s indeed very different and surprising to do things alone.”

I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the
year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship
高一年级英语学科月考试卷第 4 页 共12页
between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠
叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised
Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old
folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed
a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a
social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less
fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph
His good grades got him a good job.
He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
His views on social values are well known.
He is content with his scholastic achievements.
Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship
A helper.
A judge.
A monitor.
A supporter.
What is the greatest accomplishment for the author
The contribution to volunteering.
The success in exams.
The recovery of confidence in life.
The work in community service.
Why does the author want to major in social work at university
To gain a well-paid job.
To give his life a purpose.

It can be incredibly difficult to encourage ourselves to go for a run during winter, particularly when it’s wet and windy outside. But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute session will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too. Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways.
But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research
done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants (参
加者) to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement.
Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “Given exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better,
probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.
What did the new research find
Running fast benefits all of us.
Running is the best exercise.
A short time run can be beneficial.
A healthy mind encourages us to run.

What is the main idea of the text
We should go for a run in winter.
Running really benefits us mentally.

D
The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves.
You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.
Taking too many pictures could actually harm the brain’s ability to keep
memories, says Elizabeth Loftus, a psychology professor at the University of California, Irvine. So we get the photo but kind of lose the memory.
Photography “outsources” memories. It works in two ways: We either shake
off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’re so distracted (分散注意力的) by the process that we miss the moment altogether.
The first explanation is the loss of memory. People know that their camera
is recording that moment, so they don’t try to remember. Similarly, if you write down someone’s phone number, you’re less likely to remember it offhand because your brain tells you there’s just no need. That’s all well and good — until that piece of paper goes missing.
The other is distraction. We’re distracted by the process of taking a photo
— how we hold our phone, composing the photo, such as smiling faces, the background to our liking and clear image, all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize.
However, taking photos can benefit memory — when done mindfully.
While taking a photo may be distracting, the act of preparation by focusing on visual (视觉的) details around has some upsides. When people take the time to

zoom in (拉近镜头) on specific things, memories become strengthened.
Another benefit is that we recall moments more accurately (准确的) with
the photos. Memory has been reshaped with the help of new information and
new experiences. Thus, photos or videos help us recall moments as if they really happened.
Memories die away without a visual record backing them up. Therefore, a
photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.
What is the purpose of the first paragraph
To introduce the topic.
To make us think of similar experience.
To show the interest in taking photos.
To call on readers not to take photos.
Why does photography “outsource” memories
Taking photos is helpful for us to memorize.
Photos are more detailed than memories.
People depend more on photos to remember than their brains.
Many sources influence people’s memories during photo-taking.
What may likely be discussed next
Situations when taking photos is better.
When distraction is most likely to happen.
How to stay focused while taking photos.
How to use photo-taking to memorize better.
Which of the following could be the best title for the text

There’s a question about maths you can hear in high schools all around the world, “Why on earth are we learning something that we’ll never use in real
life ” 36 Computers can help us do the maths, and the rest of the topics

will only be useful for the expert-to-be. So why do we study maths at all
The teacher might answer, “Classes aren’t supposed to teach you formulas
(公式). 37 ” It is an answer I can totally agree with, but how does maths
“teach you to think”
38 In many ways, explaining how you get to the result is more
important than the result itself. Using mathematical logic (逻辑) to solve problems provides just the right tools.
Make sure you understand the problem before trying to solve it. 39
Or, you can work backwards. When the job is to prove a given supposition (推 测), examining the result might help in finding the evidence.
In real life, setting goals can be a powerful tool for finding a way to reach them. Write the question down, and keep making it simple until it becomes
clear. 40
Maths is supposed to teach you to think.
If you can’t solve the problem, solve a simpler one.
A great deal of high school maths has little practical use.
Solution lies in using mathematical tools for real-life problems.
Maths helps broaden students’ view instead of sharpening mind.
Solving difficult problems is the way we’ll make use of maths in real life.
The next time you see a difficult real-life problem, use the tips above.

looking out of a window. Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. They built sandcastles, played beach volleyball, and even tried surfing. But they wouldn’t be going to the beach together this summer because Allison had moved to a different city far away from Sadie’s.
Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. She could call her friend Wendy, who always
had funny ideas. Maybe they could ride their bikes together around the park. Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy. She sighed more deeply as the phone rang and rang. Then Sadie seated herself on the sofa, picked up the television remote, and put it down again. She didn’t really want to watch television, so she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home.
After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered into the kitchen and sat down
at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden. You could even finish that story about our camping trip,” said Mom.
“I don’t want to do those things by myself. I want to play with a friend.”
“Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet spot to read. Why not have a try ”
