Oscar Statuettes
The Academy Awards, now known officially as the Oscars, is a set of twenty-four awards for artistic and technical merit in the American film industry to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements. Each winner is awarded a little statuette.
Since 1950,if the winners or their family want to sell the statuettes, they have to first offer to sell them back to the Academy for US $1. If a winner refuses to agree to this rule, then the Academy keeps the statuette and never awards it to the winner.
Extensive reading
In 1992, Harold Russell needed money for his wife’s medical fees. He sold his 1946 Oscar statuette for Best Supporting Actor on August 6 in New York City. The Oscar was sold to a private collector for $60,500. Since he won the award before 1950, he was not required to offer it to the Academy first. Russell defended his decision, saying, “I don’t know why anybody would be critical. My wife’s health is much more important than any reasons. The movie will be here, even if Oscar isn’t.” Harold Russell is the only Academy Award-winning actor to have ever sold an Oscar.
