定语从句的用法
在复合句中作定语修饰主句中某一名词或代词的从句称为定语从句。引导定语从句的词通常被称为关系词,被定语从句修饰的词叫先行词,关系词一般位于先行词与定语从句之间,且作为定语从句的一个成分。关系词可分为关系代词和关系副词。关系代词主要有who, whom, whose, which和that;关系副词主要有where, when和why。
(1)引导定语从句的关系代词的用法
1)that既可指人也可指物,在从句中作主语或宾语,作主语时不可省略,作宾语时可省略。如:
Zhao Bin prefers bands that sing quiet and gentle songs.
赵宾更喜欢演唱安静柔和的歌曲的乐队。
2)which指物,不指人,在从句中作主语或宾语,作主语时不可省略,作宾语时可省略。如:
I like the books which my mother bought for me.我喜欢我妈妈给我买的这些书。
3)who指人,在从句中作主语或宾语,作宾语时可用宾格whom。如:
The boy who is writing is my younger brother.
那个正在写字的男孩是我的弟弟。
4)whose是所有格,它指代人时,所引导的定语从句中所修饰的先行词必须是人。whose指代物时,它相当于of which。如:
①I like the girl whose hair is very long.
我喜欢那个头发很长的女孩。
②Please show me the book whose cover is black.=Please show me the book the cover of which is black.请把那本黑色封面的书拿给我看看。
(2)引导定语从句的关系副词的用法
1)when表时间,在定语从句中作时间状语。如:
I still remember the day when I first came to Beijing.我还记得第一次到北京的那一天。
2)where表地点,在定语从句中作地点状语。如:
This is the house where I lived five years ago.
这是我5年前住过的房子。
3)why表原因。如:
This is the reason why we must leave now.
这就是我们现在必须离开的原因。
