马克·吐温(1835-1910),原名塞缪尔·朗赫恩·克莱门斯(Samuel Langhorne Clemens),是美国的幽默大师、小说家、作家,亦是著名演说家。
马克·吐温年幼时家境贫困,11岁时父亲去世后到印刷所当学徒。二十几岁时,成为轮船领航员。他的笔名“马克·吐温”就取自船工生活。1861年,南北战争爆发,他随哥哥去了内华达,先卷入采矿热潮,后来又去报馆工作,从此开始创作生涯。
马克·吐温的写作风格融幽默与讽刺为一体。他最著名的作品有有《竞选州长》《百万英镑》《镀金时代》《汤姆·索亚历险记》和《王子与贫儿》等。长篇小说《哈克里·费恩历险记》是他最优秀的作品,曾被美国小说家海明威誉为是“现代美国文学的源泉”。他于1910年去世,享年75岁,安葬于纽约州。

威廉·莎士比亚(1564-1616)被许多人认为是英国文学史和戏剧史上最杰出的诗人和剧作家,也是西方文艺史上乃至全世界最卓越的剧作家之一。
莎士比亚于1564年出生在英国的斯特拉特福镇。18岁时结婚,未满21岁时已经有了三个孩子。后来,莎士比亚前往伦敦,成了演员、剧作家,逐渐开始走红。三十几岁时,他家庭经济宽裕,艺术取得成功。近四十岁时,莎士比亚才回到斯特拉特福,并在此生活直到去世。
莎士比亚是欧洲文艺复兴时期英国剧坛上的一位“巨人”,他的戏剧艺术的特点是幻想与真实的巧妙结合。他的主要戏剧作品有历史剧《亨利六世》三部曲,四大悲剧《奥赛罗》《李尔王》《麦克白》和《哈姆雷特》,四大喜剧《仲夏夜之梦》《皆大欢喜》《第十二夜》和《威尼斯商人》等等。他的剧本至今还在世界各地演出。每年在他的诞辰日,许多国家都会上演他的剧本来纪念他。
