What do you see when you look at abstract(抽象派的) art Does it make sense to you Does it look like anything Is it supposed to
Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or sculpt things exactly like they looked. They didn’t want their art to be realistic. They were more interested in basic shapes and colours.
Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours (his “blue period”). Later, he used more red and pink colours (his “rose period”). Many of his other paintings are called “cubist(立体画派)” because they are made of painted squares.
After a long time, Picasso’s paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and things using strange shapes. His work was so original. Many of his fellow artists didn’t understand it.
Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes, and patterns to paint his subjects. His paintings also used strong colours to express feelings.
Other artists, like the surrealists(超现实主义者), were interested in the subconscious(潜意识). Painters like Breton and Magritte used many symbols in their work. The meaning or subject of their work wasn’t always clear. Dali, another surrealistic artist, painted pictures that looked like dreams.

Lu Xun was an excellent writer and thinker of modern China. He took part in the May Fourth New Culture Movement of 1919. He could be said to have laid the foundation(基础) of modern literature(文学) in China. You couldn’t believe that he almost became a doctor! So how did Lu Xun give up the study of medicine and take up writing
When he was young, his father fell badly ill, and little Lu Xun bought medicine for him. But the medicine bought from a quack doctor(庸医) did his father no good at all, and his father died. With a deep sadness and great anger, Lu Xun promised to study the most modern medical skills and help people through medicine. He studied hard, and was accepted to study in Sendai Medical College in Japan.
However, one event changed Lu Xun’s life. One day, the teacher played a film of news in class. In the film, Japanese soldiers were preparing to kill a Chinese while some Chinese were watching it with great interest, as if it had nothing to do with them. After that, Lu Xun thought he should treat the numb(麻木的) spirits of Chinese.
For this reason, he gave up the study of medicine and moved to Tokyo. He produced a magazine with some friends there. As a writer, Lu Xun hoped that he could save Chinese people with his pen. Hip hop, or rap music as it’s also called, started in the streets and in the clubs of New York City in the 1970s, but today many countries have their own kind of hip hop music. This kind of music has its roots in reggae(雷盖乐), disco and funk music. Rapping, which means speaking to the rhythm of the music, is an important part of this music. Young people rap to express how they feel about their lives and problems.
Would you like to rap in class Well actually, hip hop music is being played in more than 10,000 schools in the USA. Why There is a new school programme called “Flocabulary” where teachers use textbooks and hip hop CDs to help teach a variety of school subjects. The lyrics of the songs include information on a subject students are studying. This makes learning easy and fun. Students and teachers are amazed(大为惊奇) at the positive effects that it has had on exam marks. This is what one teacher said, “I’ve used hip hop songs in class, and I’ve never seen students have such great interest in history! It’s unbelievable how students remember what I teach! It even encourages us to write our own songs.”
Blake Harrison, a high school student, first thought of the idea of Flocabulary. The word “Flocabulary” comes from the words “flow” and “vocabulary”. “Flow” is a rap word for “style”, or the way a rapper says the words of a song. How did he get the idea Well, he realized he could remember the lyrics of a hip hop song very easily. So, why not make lessons into songs Today, together with Alex Rappaport, a composer, Blake produces hip hop songs for Maths, Science, and Literature, which are now being used in schools with great success.
