五、阅读理解
William Lindesay fell in love with the Great Wall after seeing it on a map as a child in England. He hoped that he could go to China and walk along the Great Wall from end to end when he grew up. Like most childhood dreams, that was almost forgotten. But then in his 20s, his brother reminded him of the Great Wall. So he set off.
In April 1987, Lindesay first arrived in China and spent 78 days in walking on the wall, from Jiayuguan Pass to Shanhaiguan Pass. During his exploration, he found part of the wall was covered with rubbish. “Some people say it will take generations(几代人) to change. I say we don’t have that time. It has to be much quicker,” he said.
Lindesay organized a clean-up activity in 1998. Three years later, he founded the International Friends of the Great Wall to protect the wall. Lindesay and over 120 volunteers from all over the world have been picking up rubbish along the wall. He also collected a lot of historical information about the Great Wall.
Now Lindesay has become one of the world’s most famous experts on its rich history.
