Wearing a caveman mask, Dr. John Marzluff walks across the campus at the University of Washington in Seattle. Crows (乌鸦)circle and squawk (尖叫),diving at him and away.
Beneath the mask, he smiles. Days before, he and his students, wearing caveman masks, trapped them and placed colored plastic bands on their legs. Then they released the unhappy birds. When the researchers wandered around campus without the masks, the crows they had caught and banded did not react to them. But when the same humans walked by while wearing the masks, the crows scolded loudly and dived at their “enemies”.
At first, only the banded birds reacted aggressively to the people in masks. But in later tests, more and more crows joined in, and even when the banded birds were not around. "Crows think and dream, fight and play, reason and take risks,“ he says. "Their antics confuse us. "
This led him to study how crows" brains work. He and his students wore one type of mask as they captured crows and brought them into the lab, training them to link that face with danger. Then a different kind of mask for more positive activities, such as feeding and caring. Then he worked with scientists at the university who scan animal brains to see which parts of a crow's brain do certain tasks. Surprisingly, the scientists found that when the crow saw the “danger" mask, one part of its brain became active. When the crow saw the "care and feeding" mask , a different part of its brain lit up. The team has shown that crows use the same parts of their brains for recognition that humans do-something that was not known before!
More than 10 years after the first mask experiment, campus crows still scold the “cavemen”. Crows also recognize people who are kind to them. Crows are always watching us… and they remember.

Coffee chains create a lot of waste, from disposable takeaway cups to the used coffee grounds (咖 啡渣)that are sent to landfills. Starbucks has started to try recyclable alternatives to the disposable cups. But the used coffee is often unnoticed.
The world drinks around 2 billion cups of coffee a day, producing 6 million tons of used grounds every year. When they go to landfills, the grounds release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.
U. K. Bio-bean has found a way to turn that waste into valuable resources. At Bio-bean, used coffee grounds are processed to remove paper cups or plastic bags, and then passed through a dryer and a further screening process. They are finally processed into the fuel, Coffee Log.
"Coffee is highly calorific and leads itself to being a really fantastic fuel," says George May, director of Bio-bean. "Coffee Log bums about 20% hotter and 20% longer than wood logs do. ”
While the fuel releases greenhouse gases when burned, if it replaces other carbon-based fuels, Bio-bean estimates that the recycling process reduces emissions by 80% compared with sending the grounds to landfills.
Founded in 2013 , Bio-bean grew rapidly, launching coffee collection services across the U. K. and building the world's first coffee recycling factory only two years later. In 2016, they launched their first product, Coffee Log, and in 2019 their first natural flavor ingredient into the food and drink industry.
"We've really managed to succeed with our innovation(仓U新)because we've managed to get to scale-the service of our company is in larger demand. What started as a good idea is today the IL K. 's largest recycling plant of coffee grounds. We are turning 7 ,000 tons of those grounds per year into the fuel," says May. "Despite being delayed by the COVID-19, we plan to expand our operation into northwestern Europe within the next five years.
32. What do the first two paragraphs suggest
A. It's necessary to ban coffee consumption.
B. Drinking coffee is increasingly popular around the world.
C. Measures should be taken to recycle coffee waste.
D. Coffee grounds are the only cause of global warming.
33. What is the Bio-bean's Coffee Log
A. A solid fuel B. A natural food.
C. A cup of hot coffee. D. A tree trunk.
34. What do we know about Bio-bean after it was founded
A. It is a high-tech company with a long history.
B. It is a promising recycling plant of coffee grounds.
C. It is started to produce coffee and fuels.
D. It is developing faster than Starbucks.
35. What does the underlined phrase “get to scale" in the last paragraph mean
A. Measure accurately.
B. Cover a wide range.
C. Classify different resources.
D. Go into mass production.

Have you ever woken up worrying about an unfinished project, an email that you forgot to send, or a meeting which you didn't have a chance to schedule 36 It turns out that we just need to tell our brains when we will do what we need to do so they don't annoy us.
Researchers used to think that this low-level worry about unfinished tasks was our unconscious mind trying to get things done by reminding us of what we still needed to do. 37
But recent research suggests that simply making a plan to deal with an unfinished task makes a huge difference in our ability to focus. When we don't know when or how we will finish the things on our task lists, what will happen 38 This is because undone tasks impress us more. As it turns out, our unconscious mind isn't actually urging us to do an undone task right now, but rather to make a plan for when we will get it done. To handle this, you can schedule a task on your calendar. 39 It seems that our brain needs to let something go.
40 So stop worrying about an undone to-do list of things that you hope to accomplish in a given day or week. Instead, you should avoid being distracted by starting each day with a concrete plan for what you will work on and when. You don't have to constantly make choices about what to concentrate on : Just follow your schedule.
A. It is more about making lists.
B. It is vital to stay focused while making plans.
C. Or you can list it as an action task or a quick task.
D. When we have no specific plans, distractions certainly take over.
E. If your answer is yes, your brain is bothered by those undone lists.
F. The belief was that the reminders wouldn't stop until the tasks were done.
G. Our thoughts will typically wander from our present task to our undone tasks.
