The life in Nanjing has changed a lot since Reform and Opening-up. Let’s take a look at some of the changes.
In the past, TVs were small and could only show pictures in black and white. There were few TV programmes. And many families didn’t have money to buy a TV set. Children in those families would go to their neighbours’ homes to enjoy TV programmes.
Now TVs are much bigger. They can show things very clearly with high definition(高清晰度). Furthermore, there are many programmes to choose from, and people can enjoy their favourite ones at any time. Almost all the families have bought a big colour TV. Some even have more than one in their homes.
It may be hard to believe that people used to work on their farmland with the help of cattle. Before the 1970s, farmers in Nanjing had to work like that because there were no modern machines. It took lots of people, old and young, much time to finish the farm work.
But in recent years, farmers have had modern machines, which make it much easier to finish the farm work. As a result, old farmers have more time to enjoy a colourful life. To make more money, young people have found jobs in shops, factories and companies.
Xinjiekou has been the commercial(商业的) centre of Nanjing. But in the 1980s, there were only some small buildings in the area. People saw few buses or cars in the streets. People used to ride bikes or walk. The main roads there were not wide.
Years later, it has become a modern CBD. There are many tall buildings in the area, where you can find cinemas, banks, restaurants and big shopping malls. People are enjoying an amazing life here. However, there is always a lot of traffic. If you go shopping there, you’d better take the underground.
