used to be very quiet. Nothing much ever happened around here. However, these days, something unusual is happening in our town. Victor, a teacher at my school, is really nervous. When he was interviewed by the town newspaper, he said, “Every night we hear strange noises outside our window. My wife thinks that it could be an animal, but my friends and I think it must be teenagers having fun.

nothing / not much的意思是“没什么; 不多; 不怎么样”,一般用于否定句中,表示并不那么重要、有趣、好等。

1.当表示对现在及将来状态的推测时,一般用can / could, may /
might, must + 动词原形。

2.当对现在及将来正在发生的动作进行推测时,一般用can /
could, may / might, must + be + doing(动词的进行时)。

二. 表示对过去状态、动作的推测
1.当表示对过去的状态、动作推测时,must / may / might可用在
肯定句中表示肯定的推测,一般用must / may / might + have
done(现在完成时)表示。

2. can / could用在否定句中表示否定的推测,一般用can / could
+ not + have done(现在完成时)表示对过去的状态、动作
