Compass It was a great gift to the world from ancient China. Before it was invented, sailors had to depend on the stars to find direction. After it was invented, the oceans were open to travel. And many new discoveries were made with the help of it.
Gunpowder It was one of the greatest inventions. It is said that in the 3rd century a Chinese man wrote about how to make it. At first, it was used for making fireworks. At the end of the Tang Dynasty, people began to use it in wars. The method of making it was brought to the Arab world and Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Paper-making China was the first country in the world to make paper. During the Western Han Dynasty (202 B.C.—8 A.D.), paper was made in some places in China. It was developed in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 A.D.—220 A.D.) by Cai Lun. He made paper with bark, ropes, rags and so on. Before it was invented, the ancient Chinese carved characters on animal bones and stones. They also wrote them on bamboo and wooden sticks.
Printing It was developed in 1041—1048 in the Song Dynasty. A man named Bi Sheng carved characters on pieces of clay and wood. Then he put ink on them. After the characters were printed on paper, the pieces of clay or wood could be used again. This technology then spread to Korea, Japan and Europe. It was the basic method at that time.

Basketball, running and swimming are popular events(项目) at the Olympics. But there are also some events that are not as popular. Some are even very strange. Let’s see if you have any knowledge about the following events.
Tug-of-war This event started in 1900 and left the Olympics in 1920. The team wins if they pull the rope past a certain point first. Interestingly, more than one team from a country can enter this event. This makes it possible for one country to win several medals.
(续表)
Rope climbing It first appeared as an Olympic sport in 1896. The climber who spends the shortest time reaching the top is the winner. The rope used to be 15 meters long. Years later, it was shortened to 8 meters, for some reason. After 1932, there was no rope climbing in the Olympics.
Race walking In race walking, walkers have to win the race by walking. To make sure that they don’t run, race walkers must have one foot on the ground at all times. Race walking has been an Olympic sport since 1904. Men enter 20-kilometer and 50-kilometer races; women only race 20 kilometers.

Glass can be seen in almost all the windows. Although glass is transparent(透明的), it has lots of disadvantages: it is heavy, breaks easily and can lose heat. What’s more, glass making creates a great deal of pollution. In recent years, scientists have been trying to find greener materials to replace glass.
Last October, scientists from America said they had designed “transparent wood” that could replace glass in windows.
They used wood from the balsa tree, which is native to South and Central America. First, they put the wood in an oxidizing bath(氧化剂) that can help make the wood take off color. Then they penetrated(注入) a kind of new material—creating a product that is transparent.
Transparent wood made from balsa wood is much stronger than glass and isn’t fragile(易碎的). So it is much safer than glass. Also, it is lighter than traditional glass, which greatly reduces its transportation burden(负担). What’s more, windows with transparent wood can not only be transparent, but also help stop losing heat. More importantly, the cost of producing transparent wood is lower, and producing transparent wood can create little pollution. The balsa tree is one of the fastest growing trees on the earth. So people can get enough balsa wood to produce transparent wood.
Maybe windows with transparent wood will be seen everywhere in the near future.

No one knows when the first kite was made. The first record of a kite was more than 2,000 years ago in China. Han Xin, the leader of an army, wanted to bring down a king. He decided to dig a tunnel(隧道) into the king’s palace. He flew a kite over the wall of the palace to make sure the length(长度) of its string(线). In this way, he could determine how long the tunnel should be. His men in the tunnel took the kite string with them. When they reached the end of the string, they knew to dig up.
Kites have been flown in Japan for hundreds of years. In the 1700s, kites were flown in autumn to give thanks for a good harvest. They were also flown to send good wishes to couples who had their first son. Today in Japan, kites are often flown as part of a celebration, such as the beginning of a new year. And kite festivals are held each year in many parts of the country.
Kites have been used for scientific purposes in the Western world. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin tied a key to a kite and flew it in a storm to find out that lightning was a form of electricity. In the 1890s, Lawrence Hargrave invented the box kite to test ideas about flight. From 1898 until 1933, the United States Weather Bureau(气象局) used box kites to collect weather data. The Wright brothers also experimented(试验) with kites. What they learnt helped them make the first airplane flight in 1903.

Most of us think the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. However, he wasn’t the first person to think of the idea. In fact, an Italian named Antonio Meucci was officially recognized(认定) as the inventor a few years ago. Who is Meucci and why wasn’t he known for his invention at the time
Antonio Meucci was born in Italy in 1808. He studied engineering and drawing. During his studies, Meucci started to experiment with electricity. He discovered that sound could travel through metal cables. When two places were connected with wires, people in those places could hear each other talk.
In 1850, Meucci and his wife, Ester, moved to New York. Meucci was worried about his wife, because she had become very ill. He needed to keep in touch with her at all times. To solve this problem, he connected metal cables between his home and his workplace. This way, they could talk to each other conveniently.
Meucci invited a group of people to see his new invention. They listened in amazement as the voice of a singer was heard through the wires.
Unfortunately, only a few people attended this talk. Even worse, Meucci never applied for a patent(专利) on his invention. Meanwhile, Alexander Graham Bell was working on the same idea and in 1876 the patent for the telephone was given to him.
In 2002, more than a century after Meucci’s death, his work was finally recognized by the government. He will now be known all over the world as the telephone’s inventor.

Do you like planting flowers What flowerpot are you using Lucy King made a special flowerpot. It is made of wood and metal. This kind of flowerpot can tell people if there is something wrong with the plant. There is a light under the flowerpot. The light under the pot will be green if all is well. And if the plant is too dry, hot or cold, the light will be red. Lucy said she had this idea because of her old grandfather. His eyes are not very well. “This kind of flowerpot is very useful to people like him,” she said. “When the light turns red, one will know the plant is too dry, hot or cold, so he has to do something until the light turns green.”
