You may have already forgotten the days when you had to learn how to use chopsticks. Every Chinese kid manages to use them for some time. But chopsticks are not just simple tools to pick up food. They come with their own special rules and traditions.
Generally, people should not make noise with chopsticks. Playing with chopsticks is seen as bad manners, just as playing with forks and knives in a Western country would be rude.
There are also some superstitions(迷信) related to chopsticks. For example, some people believe that chopsticks should not be left standing upright in a bowl. It looks like the incense(香) that Chinese use to honor the dead. Doing it at the dinner table is believed to bring bad luck.
You should not tap(敲) chopsticks on the edge of the bowl either, as beggars(乞丐) do this to ask for food. Parents might get angry if children do this as they don’t want their children to be as poor as beggars in the future.
Besides, chopsticks can also be a great gift. In Chinese, “chopsticks” is pronounced as “kuaizi”, so newlyweds(新婚夫妇) feel happy to receive chopsticks as a wedding gift. Skilled craftsmen(手艺人) paint beautiful pictures on chopsticks to make them look like fine artworks. Is your life ruled by love or by fear Love and fear are two opposite feelings that shape our life in very different ways. Most of us are controlled by both of them. However, even a tiny change towards love and away from fear can bring more happiness. Here are some suggestions towards love.
Cultivate Gratitude(培养感恩之心)
Gratitude makes us feel happier. If you remember to be thankful for the blessings(赐福) of your life, you will feel more connected to yourself and others. When you let worries go and have gratitude instead, love appears quickly.
Test the Reality of Fear
Sometimes fear can be like a cloud that keeps out the sunlight. A simple way to deal with fear is to test its reality. Write down three things that you’re afraid of. Then look at each point and ask yourself, “Is this fear really grounded(基于) in reality ” I know when I do this, I often find that fears aren’t reasonable.
Take Action
Taking action is the best way to control fear. For example, if you are not feeling well and you dont go to a doctor, you may imagine that you are having a serious health problem. Once you’ve been to a doctor, talked about the problems and dealt with them one by one, your fear will become smaller and even disappear.

There are some differences between Chinese and Western eating habits. In the West, everyone has their own plate of food while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. And sometimes the Chinese hosts use their chopsticks to put food in your bowl or on your plate. This is a sign of politeness. If you feel uncomfortable, you can just say “thank you” and leave the food there. Don’t stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl. This is not polite. Instead, lay them on your dish.

If you eat meat and then drink milk during a meal, your stomach will be uncomfortable. You can ask for a cup of coffee instead.
In America, it’s important to arrive on time. Don’t circle your plate with your arms because that means you don’t like the food. It’s not polite to say, “I’m full.” Just put the fork and knife across the plate. You’d better not reach across the table for anything. If the thing you want is not at hand, ask the nearest person for help.
