All around us are birds, animals, trees and flowers. The facts about how they live and grow are as interesting as anything could be.
Do you know that one of the greatest presidents of the USA spent hours and hours studying birds A businessman who lived near New York City became so interested in insects that he began to collect them. He now has over one thousand different kinds of insects. He keeps them carefully in glass boxes.
Then, come with me, and I will help you find some of nature’s secrets. Let us go quietly through the forests and fields. Here we shall find how a rabbit tells the others where the danger is. We shall follow a mother bear and her young babies as they try to look for food and get ready for their long winter sleep. We shall watch bees dancing in the air to tell the other bees where they can find food. I’ll show you many other interesting things. The zebra is a kind of animal that comes from Africa. They can be seen in almost all the zoos around the world. Many people like them because of their black and white stripes(条纹).
For a long time, scientists have been trying to find out why zebras have stripes and the use of these black and white stripes. But no one can give an exact answer.
The early scientists thought these black and white stripes could help them avoid being caught and eaten by tigers, lions and other animals. Because as they run, it’s difficult for other animals to estimate(估计) their speed and direction.
But is it true Scientists from England have been taking a much closer look. They have been testing the idea using a game called Dazzle Bug. That’s where you have to catch a bug, but it keeps changing its pattern(图案) in an effort to stop you doing so. What the scientists have found is that even when they are moving, the bugs still lose their clear patterns.
So scientists believe that how zebras protect themselves while moving may depend on a completely different mechanism(机制). No one knows how to explain the stripes on a zebra. But while the results may raise more questions than they answer, it does tell the idea that even for scientists, nature is a moving goal.

C.It’s easier for scientists to know about nature.

Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza(吉萨狮身人面像) was built around 2,500 B.C. But John Anthony West says that it’s much older. If he’s right, everything anybody has learned about ancient civilizations(文明) would have to be completely revised.
West, a writer and film-maker, first got interested in ancient history after studying the work of a French researcher. The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as 30,000 years ago, rather than 4,500 years ago, as most experts believe.
West joined a scientist to do research together. Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down(磨损) over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind.
Wait a minute! Water How could that be The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert, which has been dry for 12,000 years! However, before that time, it was very green. If it’s true that water wore down the Sphinx, West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.
Whether West is right or wrong, it’s important to challenge accepted ideas. That’s how science progresses.
West gave some advice to kids: If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can find on it. Do your own research. Don’t always believe everything your teachers tell you. Ask lots of questions, and find your own answers.

Ⅸ.任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,按要求完成66~70题。
If you have a chance to visit London, one place you should not miss is Tower Bridge. London’s Tower Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the world. Its Victorian style comes from a law that forced the designers to create a building that would be in harmony(协调) with the nearby Tower of London. Plans for Tower Bridge were made around 1876 when the east of London became crowded and a bridge across the Thames in that area of the city seemed a necessity. It took another eight years and lots of discussions about the design before the government started to build the bridge.
The bridge was completed in 1894 and nearly 450 workers worked for this 265-meter-long bridge. It took 11,000 tons of steel to build the bridge. The bridge became one of London’s most famous symbols. Tower Bridge is close to the harbor and it is in the direction of the sea, which requires the bridge to allow the passage of large ships. The secret to opening the bridge is hidden in the two towers. It used to open almost 50 times a day but nowadays it is only raised about 1,000 times a year.
Taking photographs of Tower Bridge is a favorite London tourist activity, but you can also go inside the bridge, where you’ll have a great view over London from the walkway between the two bridge towers. Inside the bridge is a showing area that is around the walkway and the two famous towers where you can visit the Victorian engine room. Visitors can learn about the history of the bridge through photos and films.
