Many students ask for advice about how to improve their English. Here are three basic questions.
The first question is about understanding English films and songs. Li Hao from Hubei wrote, “I like watching English films and listening to English songs, but I don’t understand very much. What can I do ”
Watching films and listening to songs are great ways to learn English! Watch and listen several times, and guess the meaning of the new words. Each time you will learn something new. I also advise you to talk about the films or songs with your friends.
The second question is about speaking. Wang Fan from Jilin wrote, “Our school has a teacher from the US. I am shy and I am afraid to speak to her. What should I do
You can say, “Hello! How are you ” “Do you like China ” These are good ways to start a conversation. And before you begin, you should smile at her! Remember this: Do not be shy. Just try.
The third question is about vocabulary. Zhang Lei from Anhui wrote, “I write down new words, but I forget them quickly. How can I remember them ”
Do not worry. It’s natural to forget new words! I suggest you write four or five words a day on pieces of paper and place them in your room. Read the words when you see them, and try to use them.

用法实例
Miss Li advised us to go to bed early and get up early.

advise与suggest都可表示“提议；建议”，大多数情况下可换用，但 advise可用于 advise sb. to do sth. 结构，而suggest则不可以。

【知识点5】动名词短语作主语的用法
知识点再现
Watching films and listening to songs are great ways to learn English! 看电影和听歌曲是学习英语的很好的方式！（P4）
此句的主语是两个动名词短语watching films和listening to songs。动名词（短语）作主语时，谓语动词常用单数形式；但是如果用连词连接两个或者两个以上的动名词（短语）作主语时，谓语动词则用复数形式。
根据汉语意思补全下列句子，每空一词。

动名词作主语有以下几种常见情况：
（1）直接位于句首作主语。如：
Swimming is a good sport in summer. 游泳是夏天的一项好运动。（2）用it作形式主语，把动名词 （真实的主语） 置于句尾作后置主语。动名词作主语时，不太常用it作先行主语，多见于某些形容词及名词之后。常见的能用于这种结构的形容词还有：better, wonderful, enjoyable, interesting, foolish, difficult, useless, senseless, worthwhile等。如：
It is no use telling him not to worry. 叫他不要担心是没用的。
注意：important，essential，necessary等形容词不能用于上述结构。
（3）用于“There be”结构中。如：
There is no saying when he’ll come. 很难说他何时回来。
（4）用于布告形式的省略结构中。如：
No smoking.（=No smoking is allowed here. ） 禁止吸烟。
No parking. 禁止停车。
