According to the United States government, people are classified as homeless if they have no place to stay and no expectation of finding a place for the next thirty days.Although technically accurate, that is an impersonal assessment of an enormous and very human problem.
The homeless population represents all of the Americans. It includes men and women, the elderly, children, and infants. Its members are from all ethnic groups. What they have in common is poverty.
Currently in the U.S., thirty-nine million people live in poverty. When money is really tight, paying the rent or buying food often becomes a choice.Government assistance in the form of food stamps does help but, as one homeless man explains, you can’t pay the rent with food stamps.
With no money for rent, the streets and homeless shelters become the alternative.
Although men constitute the largest group within the homeless population, homeless women with children are rapidly joining them.In fact, one quarter of the homeless people in the U.S.are teenagers and young children.
People may become homeless for numerous reasons. However, there are certain factors that many of these individuals have in common. They include a lack of adequate education and job skills.A majority of the teenagers and adults have not completed high school.
The abuse of alcohol and drugs is also a common factor. One third of the adult homeless population abuses alcohol. While one quarter of the same group uses drugs.
Some members of this population suffer mental health problems.Within the past several years many institutions for the mentally ill have been closed and their patients sent “home”.Unfortunately, a number of those people have no home to go to and they are unable to adequately look after themselves.
Job loss in today’s economy has also become a real factor in the loss of people’s homes. The breakup of families through abandonment and divorce are also contributing factors, particularly when there are children involved. The parent who is left to care for the kids with inadequate income may be forced to depend on the homeless shelters to put a roof over their heads.
56.The writer thinks that the U.S.government’s definition for the homeless reveals ________.
A.an insincere attitude toward the homeless
B.an unbearable attitude toward the homeless
C.an uncivilized attitude toward the homeless
D.an unsympathetic attitude toward the homeless
57.The U.S.government helps the homeless by ___________.
A.giving them homeless allowance B.giving them food stamps
C.finding jobs for them D.finding residence for them
58.People become homeless for all the following reasons EXCEPT __________.
A.the lack of adequate education B.the abuse of alcohol and drugs
C.the closure of institutions for the mentally ill
D.the poor performance of economy
59.The breakup of families is likely to lead to homelessness because a parent with kids may_____.
A.lose his or her job in today’s economy B.be unable to look after the kids
C.not have enough income D.find residence at a homeless shelter
B
Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completed a university degree could find a good career quite easily.Companies toured the academic institutions, competing with each other to select graduates. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs.
Most careers organizations highlight three stages for graduates to follow in the process of securing a suitable career:recognizing abilities, matching these to available jobs and presenting them well to possible employers.
Job seekers have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area.Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes. An honest assessment of personal interests and abilities such as creative skills, or skills acquired from work experience, should also be given careful thought.
The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. To do this, graduates can study job and position information in newspapers, or they can visit a careers office, write to possible employers for information or contact friends or relatives who may already be involved in a particular profession. After studying all the various options, they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various careers.
Good personal presentation is essential in the search for a good career.Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling errors.Where additional information is asked for, job seekers should describe their abilities and work experience in more depth, with examples if possible. They should try to balance their own abilities with the employer’s needs, explain why they are interested in a career with the particular company and try to show that they already know something about the company and its activities.
When graduates go to an interview, they should prepare properly by finding out all they can about the possible employer.Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also important.Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer.
60.“Those days are gone, even in Hong Kong” in Paragraph 1 suggests that_________.
A.finding a good career used to be easier in Hong Kong than elsewhere
B.now everyone in Hong Kong has an equal chance of finding a good job
C.graduates now face stronger competition in Hong Kong than elsewhere
D.even in Hong Kong companies tour universities trying to select graduates
61.It is implied in Paragraph 3 that graduates should____________.
A.aim to give a balanced account of what the employer needs
B.consider careers which suit their values, interests and abilities
C.stress their personal attitudes and values in job applications
D.recognize their own abilities regardless of what the employer looks for
62.According to Paragraph 4, graduates should_____________.
A.find a good position and then compare it with other careers
B.ask friends or relatives to secure them a good job
C.get information about a number of careers before making comparisons
D.study the opportunities and the kinds of training that will be available
63.In the last paragraph, the writer seems to suggest that _____________.
A.interviewees should appear humble if they can’t give an answer
B.dressing properly is more important than being able to give an answer
C.it is better for interviewees to be honest than to pretend to understand
D.it is a good idea for interviewees to be boastful in their answers

For centuries, the body's blood has been linked closely with the emotions.People who show no human emotions or feelings, are said to be cold-blooded killer. For example, the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. He seems to kill for no reason, and no emotion, as if taking someone's life as nothing.
Cold can affect other parts of the body. The expression "get cold feet" has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do.For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned, and all the work of the organizations will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.
The expression "give someone the cold shoulder" probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you.Or, to someone who has lied about you to others.
A cold fish is not a fish.It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth.A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted.Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy.Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who, without feelings, broke the hearts of their lovers.
"Out in the cold" means not getting something that everybody else got.A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise , that he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
64.When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way, you may express by "_____".
A.I give him the cold shoulder B.I think he is a cold-blooded man
C.I think he is a cold fish D.I'm likely to get cold feet
65.If Sue shows absolutely no reaction to those awful pictures of starving children in Africa, you will say ______.
A.she is a cold-blooded killer B.she gets cold feet
C.she is a cold fish D.she is out in the cold
66.We can use the expression "_____" to describe a man who abandons or hurts his lover without mercy.
A.cold-blooded B.cold shoulder C cold feet D.cold-hearted
67.The topic of this passage is about _____.
A.the relationship between cold and our body
B.some expressions about friendship
C.some expressions connected with cold
D.how cold weather comes into being
D
Women are now as likely to use the Internet as men—about two-thirds of both genders, yet a new study shows that gaps remain in what each sex does online.
American men who go online are more likely than women to check the weather, the news, sports, political and financial information, the Pew Internet and American Life Project reported Wednesday. They are also more likely to use the Internet to download music and software and to take a class.
Online women, meanwhile, are bigger users of e-mail, and they are also more likely to go online for religious information and support for health or personal problems.
“For men, it’s just, ‘give me the facts,’” said Deborah Fallows, who wrote the report based on six years of Pew surveys, “For women, its ‘Let’s talk about this. Are you worried about this problem?’ It’s keeping in touch and connecting with people in a richer way.”
About two- thirds of the 6,403 adults surveyed by Pew during 2005 said they use the Internet. By gender, it was 68%of the male respondents, and 66%of the female participants---a statistically insignificant(不重要的)difference given the study’s margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2%points. In 2002, by contrast, the gap was slightly larger: 61%vs. 57%.
The surveys find that for many activities, such as getting travel information or looking up a phone number, men and women are equally likely to use the Internet.

D. Men and women in the US have difference way of surfing the Internet.
70. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ________
A. A small part of women in the US go on line today.
B. Women in the US going on line are only concerned with personal problems.
C. Men are still more likely to use the Internet than women.
D. The gap between both sexes going online in 2002 was slightly larger than that in 2005.

第四部分:任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
In simple words, hibernation is a state of deep sleep. Hibernation differs from normal sleep in various ways. Hibernating animals take a long time to wake up from their sleep. Turning or kicking their bodies does not seem to wake them up. Even after waking up from hibernation, these animals take some time to restart their normal activities. During hibernation, the heart rate slows down and some of the non-vital organs become entirely inactive. This is a state in which the body uses very little energy.
Winter is the time when food is less and weather rough. Animals have to spend a lot of energy finding food. Even if they succeed in finding anything, it is often not enough to make up for the loss of energy. Besides, the cold weather may often become a cause of death. As a result of all these, animals have to reduce their food demand by reducing energy requirements. This is achieved by hibernating throughout the winter.
Before the onset of winter, when there is plenty of food, animals eat overmuch and store much of the food in the form of fat. As winter arrives, they return to their home where they spend the rest of winter hibernating. As animals hibernate, their body temperature starts dropping due to lack of activity and metabolism(新陈代谢). At one point, it is only a few degrees higher than the surrounding temperature. Whatever energy the body needs to perform certain tasks is got from the fat storage. Due to lack of activity, the fat burning process is slow and steady. The energy from fat is enough to keep the animal alive for the rest of the winter.
Hibernation differs for every species. For example, some animals like black bears may sleep for the whole winter without waking up while animals like squirrels may wake up every 4 days to eat some food, pass waste matter from the body, and then go back to sleep. Hibernation in domestic(家养的) animals may differ from that in the wild ones. As there is no food shortage for domestic animals, domestic animals hibernate as a result of their natural instinct(本能) but with more active periods in between.
