Step 1:
Activate and Share
What do you know about Ludwig van Beethoven Complete the quiz.
· Read aloud the title of the lesson, the rubric and the four questions. Discuss any difficult words or terminology.
· Students answer the questions independently as a benchmark assessment.
Step 2:
Read and Explore
Ⅰ. Scan the story about Beethoven and answer the questions in Activity 1.
· Ask volunteer students to read the italicized paragraph and the first paragraph.
· Give students a few moments to correct their answers in activity 1.
· Discuss the answers as a class.
Ⅱ. Read the story. What can you find about Beethoven's composing of Symphony No.9 and its first performance Use a graphic organiser to organise the Information you find.
· Read the rubric and the Skill Builder. Draw a diagram to show the main information of the passage and how the passage is structured. Let's read the passage to find details on Symphony No.9 and supporting sentences.
· Volunteer students read the story.
· In pairs, while listening, students add the details to the diagram. Support students as they complete the task.
· Encourage students to answer the questions in the Skill Builder about the passage that they have just read.
· Discuss the answers as a class.
Ⅲ. Answer the questions based on your notes. Read the story again if needed.
· Students volunteer to each read a few sentences of the text.
· Discuss the answers as a class.
Ⅳ. Pair Work Choose one of the following topics to introduce to your partner.
· Students choose a topic and mind map information on that topic.
· Using those ideas and the discussed vocabulary, students write at least five sentences.
· In pairs, students read their sentences to their partner and review what they have leant.

· Divide students into groups to answer the questions and provide logical reasoning.
· Discuss the answers as a class.
Ⅵ. Complete the sentences with the phrases below.
·Volunteer students can read the phrases in the box and the sentence frames. Discuss any difficult words or terms.
· Encourage students to work independently and not to turn back to the passage, to complete the sentences by filling in the terms.
· Students can read their sentences to a partner to ' hear' that they sound correct.
· Discuss the answers as a class.

Focus on Language: Word Building
Ⅰ. Complete the Word Builder. Use a dictionary to help you.
·Instruct students that they will use their dictionaries to assist with completing the table.
·Ask students to look up one of the words in their dictionary. What part of speech is it How do you know this What is the verb form How do you know this What is the adjective form
How did the word change A suffix helps to change the word form. Underline the suffixes that were added.
·Discuss the answers as a class.
Ⅱ. Complete the sentences with the correct form of the words in the Word Builder.
·Volunteer students read the rubric and the sentence frames. Explain any difficult words or terms.
·Divide students into groups based on their reading level. Allow high level readers to complete the activity alone. Encourage middle level readers to work together to complete the sentences. Support low level readers by providing a key with the answers that they can choose from.

Express Yourself
Ⅰ. Pair Work Which part of the story about Beethoven impressed you most Why
· In pairs, students discuss what impressed them most about the passage and what they learnt.
· Each student shares their answer with the class.
Ⅱ. Find some pieces of Beethoven's music online. Discuss how you feel when listening to his music.
· Read the rubric. Explain to students that as you play various pieces of Beethoven's music, they need to write their opinion of the piece. How does the music make you feel What does it remind you of Do you like it or not Support your answer.
· Play the pieces of Beethoven's music. Support low level students with sentence frames for the answers.
