在西方国家，学生一旦不小心在学校里丢失了东西，就会写一个Lost便条，上面写出所丢物品以及联系方式。同样，当人们拾到了物品，会以同样的方式在纸上写一个Found便条。也有些学校会专门设立一个失物招领处，例如：Lost and Found（box, office, room, desk…）,便于大家找回丢失的物品。
寻物启事就是寻找丢失的物品，使拾到者能通过启事中的信息及联系方式，及时把物品归还失主。招领启事就是要把拾到的东西通知丢失者来认领。招领启事的内容简洁，不详细描述拾到物品的特征，以防止别人冒领。
第一步：明确启事的格式和内容安排。
⑴ 标题：要以Lost和Found作为标题放在启事上方正中，也可以顶格写。
⑵ 内容：寻物启事要包括丢失的物品和其特点，丢失的时间、地点以及失主的有关信息；招领启事的正文包括招领物品，拾到时间、地点以及失主认领物品的地点或联系方式。
第二步： 写启事的正文。
