三、阅读理解(分两节,满分45分)
第一节、阅读选择(40分)
A
Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study.
To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized(有条理的). When you put away a book-or memory-you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.
How can you do this with vocabulary The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is height, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.

I don’t know what’s wrong with my brain. My memory started to become shockingly complete in 1974, when I was eight years old. From 1980 on, it has been near perfect. Give me a date from that year forward, and I can immediately tell you what day of the week it was, what I did on that day, and what happened on that day.
I can recall memories at will. But my remembering, in fact, is not under my control. My memories automatically (自动地) flash forward and backward in my head through the years of my life. What does it feel like Well, just imagine this: Someone started to make videos of you when you were a child, and has been continuously following you around all day, every day. This person has placed all of these videos onto a single DVD, and you are being forced to watch it over and over again. There you are as a ten-year-old in your living room watching your favorite TV program. Then, suddenly, you’re on the beach during a family vacation when you were twelve. I never know what I might remember next.
As I grew up, a great many new memories were being stored in my brain, with more and more of them endlessly flashing through my mind. I became a prisoner to my own memory. My mother would tell me not to care so much about the past. I’d try to explain that I didn’t really care about the past. The memories just flooded my mind. But nobody could understand me.
My greatest hope now is that scientists will discover something about my brain in the near future. I hope their findings will help them learn more about the human mind.

Until recently, many people believed that the brain has completed its development by teens. However, scientists found out the brain still grows as much during teens as it did during early childhood.
You may notice that your children seems to be getting more forgetful as they are in their teens. One parent told us a story. Her daughter, Mary, was invited to take part in a birthday party on Thursday last week. Mum reminded her of the party on Wednesday evening. Before Mary left for school on Thursday, mum asked her where she needed to go after school that day. “The birthday party,” Mary answered as she walked out the door. On Thursday evening, when mum went to the birthday party to pick up Mary, she found that Mary was not among them. In surprise, she called home. Mary quickly answered the phone. “Why aren’t you at the party ” asked her surprised mother. “I forgot,” answered Mary.
Why does this often happen for parents and kids of this age Because the brain of a teen is growing so fast that it is inefficient(效率低的). Think of a boom town and it is developing faster than the builders can put up the things and clear out rubbish. The teenage brain is something like this town—the building work needs to be finished, the work place needs to be cleaned up, they can be better planned, and may forget less.
What can parents do about it The first step is agreeing that it really is happening and your child doesn’t mean to be against the rules . Although time will finally take care of the issue, you can support your children during this time by gently but firmly help them.

A. Our Brains Are Growing So Fast

Think of a simple object—a piece of chalk, for example. Are you remembering its name, its shape, its color or its size Are you remembering what it is used for, or the sound it makes when the teacher writes on the blackboard Scientists say that memory includes different parts of the brain, such as language and the ability of sense. They believe that you begin to create a memory when you notice something you’re your senses. Then messages are sent to different brain cells which join together to form connections. A new connection goes into your short-term memory. It is stored there for about 30 seconds, and then it is either lost or stored in your long-term memory.
Having a good memory means making lots of connections and storing them in your long-term memory. To do this, you need to keep your brain in good shape. Eat plenty of brain food such as fish oil, fruit and vegetables. Laughter also makes your brain more active. Also, don’t forget to exercise. So do some sports or just move around a lot in the house. Finally, get plenty of sleep. This will make your memories grow stronger.
When you want to remember new information, you must pay special attention. Use your senses—sight, smell, hearing and touching and keep repeating the information. To do well in your exams this year, turn off the TV, silence your mobile, and review your work regularly. To remember something special, use your imagination to create visual(视觉的) connections. For example, you need to take a pencil, an eraser, your ID card and chips to your next exam. Imagine the ID card as the body of an animal, the pencil its long neck, and the eraser its head. Your animal is hungry, so now imagine it eating a bag of chips. It may sound crazy, but its fun and it works. Another way is to do something different to your room. Turn a picture upside-down, or tie a sock around the door handle to remind yourself of something to remember.

A. lead in the topic of the article B. show the importance of chalk
