(Text 10)
Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Maria. I’m from Peru. I’m so glad to be invited here to share my story today. As a newcomer to the United States in 2017, I quickly realized that I needed more education to live a better life in this country. My English was not good enough to take college-level courses, so I went to Community College in the spring of 2019. I took some ESL courses there. Then I decided to continue working toward a degree. Despite working a full-time job and caring for my family, I am finally close to completing my English degree. Once I complete my studies at Community College, I plan to go to Metropolitan State University of Denver to get a degree in business and economics. I am proud to be a student at Community College. I want to thank my family for all their support; and my professor, Heather McMichael, for making me full of courage and hope. At last, thanks for this opportunity to share my story here.

“Good morning,” the new teacher said. “I’m Ernesto Flores, your teacher for fifth grade.” In all his years in school, Julio had never heard a teacher use his or her first name. Of course, the students always found out what they were, but it was up to the students to discover this information for themselves.
“Now I’d like to find out who you are,” said Mr. Flores. He began to call the roll (点名), starting with the boys. Julio shook his head. Teachers always began with the girls.
“Julio Sanchez,” called Mr. Flores, pronouncing it Hulio. That was the correct way to say the name in Spanish.
Several kids laughed. They had never heard Julio’s name pronounced without the J.
Mr. Flores looked up from the roll book. “Isn’t that how you say your name ” he asked Julio. “Or do you prefer Julio with a J ”
“At home, they call me Hulio. But at school everyone calls me Julio,” Julio said. “Do you like two pronunciations of your name ” asked the teacher. “It’s a good Spanish name and you should be proud of it.”
Julio smiled. “I know,” he said, “but it doesn’t matter to me.”
“Are you sure ” asked Mr. Flores. “Your name is a very important part of you.”
Julio thought for a moment. “Okay,” he said. “From now on, everyone please call me Hulio. Puerto Rico, where I was born, used to be a Spanish colony (殖民地).”
“That’s right,” said Mr. Flores. “Can you tell us something about Puerto Rico ”
“I came here when I was only eight months old. I don’t remember anything,” Julio replied.

We talk a lot about air pollution. Here in Hong Kong we always complain (抱怨) about light pollution as well. Then, there is noise pollution. It’s the same in many cities around the world, and in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, people have been complaining about the noise made by drivers who continually sound their car horns (喇叭). That is until recently, when something was finally done about it.
The Chief District Officer of Kathmandu had received many complaints about horn pollution. He said that everyone felt the use of the car horn in recent years had become excessive. Researchers in Kathmandu found that for about 80 percent of the time, it really was not necessary for drivers to use their car horns. Sounding the horn to make a noise had become more of a habit. It was no longer being used as it was supposed to be used: to warn people of danger.
At the beginning of the Nepali New Year in 2017, the local government passed a law to ban (禁止) the use of car horns unless used correctly. Within six months, 11,000 fines had been collected by the local traffic police. The fine was about HK$360. A taxi driver in Kathmandu can make about
HK$1,000 per day, so he could lose about one-third of his money if he broke the law.
As usual, there were many complaints from drivers. They said that cows and dogs were free to walk on the roads. They always caused danger.
Sounding a car horn was the only way to get them to move out of the way. And while there were quite a few traffic lights in the streets of Kathmandu, very few of them worked. This meant there was often a traffic mess.
The ban on using a car horn went ahead, and within a few weeks the streets of Nepal’s capital were quieter — even though they were still just as busy. Because of the ban, drivers are a little more careful when they drive. Fewer accidents (事故) have been reported. The local government says the horn ban will now be copied in other areas of Nepal.
28. What do Hong Kong and Kathmandu have in common
A. Both have been troubled by light pollution.
B. Both have succeeded in fighting air pollution.
C. Both have been faced with the problem of noise pollution.
D. Both have received many complaints about car accidents.
29. What does the underlined word “excessive” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Too much. B. Quite simple.
C. Very correct. D. More dangerous.
30. What will you find if you go to Kathmandu
A. No traffic lights in the streets can work.
B. The traffic on the roads is usually very heavy.
C. Animals are not allowed to walk on the streets.
D. Drivers are required to drive on one-way streets.
31. What can we guess about Kathmandu’s horn ban
A. It is unfair. B. It is worrying.
C. It is interesting. D. It is successful.
D
With summer drawing to a close, parents are helpless.
Camp’s over. The kids’ friends have left for warmer places. A trip to the pool doesn’t bring the same excitement it did in June. And so many families have no choice but to go for a trip to the amusement park (游乐园).
Whether you’re thinking of Six Flags, Sesame Place, Hersheypark or Dutch Wonderland, don’t do it — you’ll be sorry. Amusement parks — especially water parks — have never been more popular. More than 26 million people went to a Six Flags last year. These parks bring out the worst in kids and parents alike. What starts out as a special treat ends up in disappointment (失望) and tears.
As soon as you get to the park, you pay a couple of hundred dollars for a family of four. Already, expectations are unrealistic as parents start to do the math. How many rides will I get for the money The answer — at least in August — is four.
That’s because of the lines. Time stops as you stand in the sun leading up to even the least exciting ride. Over and over we count the number of people in front of us, wondering how many more rounds there’ll be before our turn. Then there are the other parents — some of whom seem to think the lines are part of the game.
At Dutch Wonderland last weekend, one father walked up to my kids and asked if they were in line. For five minutes, he had his daughter stand behind them. When I turned my head, he had her stand ahead of them. Then he did it to the kids next in line too.
By the end of the day, you see mothers and fathers buy their kids ice cream again and again to ease (缓解) the influences of the heat, disappointment and anger.
It’s like they’ve forgotten — it was all the kids’ idea in the first place.
32. Why are parents helpless
A. Their kids are having little fun.
B. They are not good at planning trips.
C. Their kids depend on them too much.
D. They are too busy to play with their kids.
33. What does the author think of the money spent by parents
A. It is not worth it. B. It is good for the family.
C. It wouldn’t be so much in August. D. It is a waste for those poor at math.
34. Why did the father ask the author’s kids whether they were in line
A. He was a polite person. B. He couldn’t find the line.
C. He wanted his kid to cut in line. D. He wanted to teach them a lesson.
35. What would be the best title for the text
A. Behave well, little kids! B. Mind your manners, parents!
