An earthquake is one of the most common natural calamities. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile (易碎的) items, like those made of glass are easily broken and should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire outbreaks during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases at all times.
If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.
If trapped in debris (碎片), cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you. Use a whistle if one is available. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous dust. Do not light a match because you may burn yourself. Do not move about or kick up dust.

“Creativity is the key to a brighter future,” say education and business experts. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this important skill in children.
If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925 , we might not have the product that we now think of as great importance: a new type of tape. Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their working time just thinking about and developing new ideas.
Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence. The fact that a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something.
Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can gain information but can't recognize ways to use it in new situations. They may know the rules correctly but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems.
It is important to give children choices. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. Even if it's choosing between two food items for lunch, decision making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should try to let them decide how to use their time or spend their money. This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble.
5.We can know from the passage that creativity is ______.
A.something that most people are born with
B.something that has nothing to do with intelligence at all
C.a way of using what one has learned to work out new problems
D.something that is not important to the life in the future at all
6.Why don't schools try to encourage creativity
A.They don't think creativity education is important.
B.They don't want their students to make mistakes.
C.They pay no attention to examination marks.
D.They think it impossible to develop creativity in class.
7.What should parents do when their children decide how to spend their money
A.Allow them to have a try.
B.Try to help them as much as possible.
C.Take no notice of whatever they do.
D.Order them to spend the least money.
8.What did the company where Drew once worked learn from its mistake
A.It should encourage people to work a longer time.
B.People should be discouraged to think freely.
C.People will do better if they spend most of their working time developing new ideas.
D.It is necessary for people to spend some of their working time considering and developing new ideas.

Cleaning your plate may not help feed hungry children today, but the old advice of mothers everywhere may help reduce food waste from the farm to the fork, help the environment and make it easier to feed the world's growing population.
Hard data is still being collected, but experts in Chicago say about 30% to 50% of the food produced in the world goes uneaten. The average American throws away 33 pounds of food each month—about $40 worth, which means each person throws away almost 400 pounds of food every year. The US Department of Agriculture says that 23% of eggs and an even higher rate of produce end up in the trash(垃圾).
“We forget we have all these fresh fruit—and vegetables, and at the end of the week we have to throw them away,” said Esther Gove, a mother of three young children in South Berwick, Maine. “Now, I don't buy as much fresh produce as I used to.”
But the effect of food waste arrives far beyond the kitchen. Agriculture (农业) is the world's largest user of water, a big consumer of energy and major emitter of greenhouse gases during production. Experts say reducing waste is a simple way to cut stress on the environment and can ease pressure on farmers, who will be called on to feed an expected 9 billion people around the world in 2050, compared with about 7 billion today.
No matter how sustainable (可持续的) farming is, if the food's not getting eaten, it's not sustainable and it's not a good use of our resources. In richer nations, fruit and vegetables end up in the trash because they aren't pretty enough to meet companies' standards, and have gone bad in a home refrigerator or aren't eaten at a restaurant. In developing countries, much food goes wrong before it gets to the market because of poor roads and lack of refrigeration. High food prices are another reason, because some people can't afford the food that's produced.
9.The underlined word “emitter” in Paragraph 4 means “________”.
A.user B.finder
C.protector D.producer
10.Which of the following topics may follow the text
A.More examples of food waste.
B.Ways to reduce food waste.
C.Experts' ideas on the environment.
D.Advice for food with high prices.
11.From the first paragraph. we know that cleaning your plate ________.
A.is your mother's best advice for you
B.can help solve certain problems in the world
C.can help feed hungry children all over the world
D.helps meet the growing population's needs

I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike. It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My granddad was the one who taught me, and he helped me when I got hurt. The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what I was doing, and just about everything went wrong. My granddad told me to just put my feet on the pedals and start pedaling (骑自行车). He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn't.
As soon as I started trying to balance myself, he let go. I happened to look back just then. I was scared to death that I was going to fall and hurt myself. When I was scared, my mind went blank from pedaling, and I just wanted off. I forgot how to use the brakes (车闸) and fell right off the bike. My granddad kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally stopped crying, got up and tried again.
As soon as I started pedaling again, my pants got caught in the chain, and I fell flat on my face and hit my nose. Since that happened, my granddad decided to call_it_a_day and try again the next morning. The next morning I woke up bright and early, and was very eager to try to ride my bike. My nose felt better, so I wasn't that afraid of falling anymore.
Though I knew there were a lot of difficulties on the way to mastering the skills in riding a bike, I believed I could do well with my granddad's help. After all, riding a bike was what I wanted to do eagerly.
12.How was the author when he was on the bike first
A.He didn't know where he would be going.
B.He thought balancing himself was easy.
C.He was nervous and didn't know what to do next.
D.He put his feet on the pedals and started pedaling.

A.Remember what happened this day.
B.Make the author feel happy.
C.Stop practicing bicycling.
D.Go on to ride a bike.
14.What is the author's attitude towards his granddad
A.Supportive. B.Grateful.
C.Indifferent. D.Negative.
15.Which of the following could be the title for the passage
A.The Experience of My First Riding a Bike
B.The Difficulty I Met with My Granddad
C.The First Time I Got My Own Bike
D.The Great Moment When I Stayed with My Granddad

第二节 概要写作(25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
When was the last time you sent someone a letter by regular mail Thanks to the Internet, many people prefer to send e mails rather than mail letters using the postal system. Young people entering the working world today find themselves sending and replying to hundreds of business related e mails every week. However, many of these same young people don't seem to know some basic rules when it comes to sending e mails at work. Most of the people said they didn't check their spelling or punctuation (标点) before hitting “send”. Even more surprising was that 5% of them said they sometimes end e mails to their bosses with the words “love and kisses”! While this is fine for personal messages to friends and loved ones, it is normally considered improper in the workplace.
The main reason for this use of informal language in workplace e mails is that a lot of young people have always communicated with others on the Internet—especially using e mails—in a relaxed and friendly manner. For many people, online communication outside of work, such as talking with others in chat rooms, posting information on message boards, and sending e mails to friends, is usually for fun. Another reason is that young people now are unfamiliar with how to write formal letters, because they have never had to write a formal letter before. They have had no training in how to write a basic business letter, and are unaware of the style and language that should, and should not, be used.
With more business letters now being conducted using the Internet than ever before, it is important for people to realize the differences in language use between personal and business communication—especially when they're using e mails. So next time you send an e mail at the office, remember you're not just online, you're at work.
