阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
It was Sunday, so dad and I were at the second hand goods market, looking for tools, appliances (家用电器) , and other things that needed cleaning. Some were broken; others, like silver cups, just needed to be cleaned and polished. It was 1974, and the depression(经济衰退) was very serious. Dad worked full time at a factory, but the money wasn't enough. Dad had tried a second job for a while, but he found it was too hard on the family. One day, he had an excellent idea that set me on a lifelong course of making money to support myself. Standing beside a crowded table at the second hand goods market, I looked over an ancient manual sewing machine. Someone had changed it to run on electric power. It was much older than Mom's machine, but it looked like it had quality and a long life built into it. “Dad!” I called. “This is a beauty!”
Dad walked over, pulling a cart full of audio equipment, tools, worn out appliances, and what appeared to be a block of dull kitchen knives. “What have you got, Son?” I described what I saw and what I figured I could do to fix the beauty up. Dad paid for my discovery, and we headed home.
Every day after school I worked on the ancient machine, and every night Dad and I sharpened tools and knives, polished metal, and replaced missing parts from various items. The next Sunday we headed off, as we did every weekend, to that same market, where we sold the treasures we'd purchased the week before—at a tidy profit. My antique beauty brought in more money than anything else, and Dad let me keep every penny.
Dad has gone now, but I can never thank him enough. Even if we hadn't needed the extra money Dad and I brought in, I wouldn't have traded those weekends for all the picnics or Little League games in St. Louis—not in a million years.

A survey said the average Asian dad spent one minute a day with his children. I was shocked. I mean, a whole minute Every day Get real. Once a week maybe. The fact is,many Asian males are terrible at kid related things. In fact, I am one of them.
Child rearing (养育) doesn't come naturally to guys. My mother knew the names of our teachers, best friends and crushes. My dad was only vaguely aware that there were short people sharing the apartment. My mother bought healthy fresh food at the market every day. My dad would only go shopping when there was nothing in the fridge except a jar of butter. Then he'd buy beer. My mother always knew the right questions to ask our teachers. My dad would ask my English teacher if she could get us a discount on school fees. My mother served kid food to kids. My dad added chili sauce to everything, including our baby food.
The truth is,mothers have superpowers. My son fell off a wall once and hurt himself all over. I demanded someone bring me a computer so I could google what to do. My wife ignored me and did some sort of chanting (咏诵) phrase such as“Mummy kiss it better,” and cured 17 separate injuries in less than 15 seconds.
Yes,mothers are incredible people, but they are not always correct. Yet honesty forces me to record the fact that mothers only know best 99.99 percent of the time. Here are some famous slip ups.
The mother of Bill Gates:“If you're going to drop out of college and hang out with your stupid friends, don't come running to me when you find yourself penniless. ”The mother of Albert Einstein: “When you grow up, you'll find that sitting around thinking about the nature of time and space won't pay the grocery bills.” The mother of George W. Bush: “You'll never be like your dad,who became President of the United States and started his own war.”

Bad teeth may be painful and it's getting worse without treatment. They can even ruin your life. Illness of the teeth can find its way into the blood system. This can increase the chances of a heart disease or other illnesses.
Experts say good care for teeth should start at birth. Mothers' milk is the best food for the healthy development of teeth.
But dentists say a baby's mouth and early teeth should be cleaned after each feeding. Use a cloth with a little warm water. Do the same if a baby is fed with a bottle. Experts say if you decide to put your baby to sleep with a bottle, give him only water.
When a baby's teeth begin to appear, you can clean them with a wet toothbrush. Dentists say it is important to find soft toothbrushes made especially for babies and to use them very gently. Young children often eat toothpaste (牙膏) when they brush their teeth, so they should be carefully watched when they brush their teeth.
Parents often ask what effect thumb sucking (吮拇指) might have on their baby's teeth. Experts generally agree that this is fine early in life. Most children stop sucking their thumbs by the age of four. If it continues, parents should talk to their children's dentists or doctors.
Dentists say children should have their first dental visit by the time they are one year old. They say babies should be examined when their first teeth appear, usually at around six months.

We have two daughters: Kristen is seven years old and Kelly is four. Last Sunday evening, we invited some people home for dinner. I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that their job was to join Mommy in answering the door when the bell rang. Mommy would introduce them to the guests, and then they would take the guests' coats upstairs and put them on the bed in the second bedroom.
The guests arrived. I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids.
Each of the guests made a particular fuss over(过分爱护) Kelly, the younger one, admiring her dress, her hair and her smile. They said she was a remarkable girl to be carrying coats upstairs at her age.
I thought to myself that we adults usually make_a_big_“to_do”_over the younger one because she's the one who seems more easily to be hurt. We do it with the best of intentions (意图).
But we seldom think of how it might affect the other child. I was a little worried that Kristen would feel she was being outshone (使黯然失色). I was about to serve dinner when I realized that she had been missing for twenty minutes. I ran upstairs and found her in the bedroom, crying.
I said, “What are you doing, my dear?”
She turned to me with a sad expression and said, “Mommy, why don't people like me the way they like my sister Is it because I'm not pretty Is that why they don't say nice things about me as much?”
I tried to explain to her, kissing and hugging her to make her feel better.
Now, whenever I visit a friend's home, I make it a point to speak to the elder child first.
12.The guests praised Kelly for carrying coats upstairs because of her ________.
A.beautiful hair B.pretty clothes
C.lovely smile D.young age
13.Why did Kristen feel sad and cry
A.The guests gave her more coats to carry,
B.She didn't look as pretty as Kelly.
C.The guests praised her little sister more than her.
D.Her mother didn't introduce her to the guests.
14.What does the author want to tell us
A.Parents should pay more attention to the elder children.
B.The younger children are usually more easily hurt.
C.People usually like the younger children more.
D.Adults should treat children equally.
15.What does the underlined expression “make a big ‘to do’ over” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Show much concern about.
B.Have a special effect on.
C. List jobs to be done for.
D.Do good things for.

This made him very angry.
He had put up a board, which said,“No parking” in the garden facing the road, but nobody noticed it. People seemed to obey(遵守) only a_police_notice,_but not a private one. There were no parked cars where there was a_blue_board_with_letters on it:Police Notice—No Parking!
Mrs Brown suggested that he could steal a police notice. He dared_not,_being_afraid_of_going_to_prison. She then suggested that he could make one just like a police notice. How nice to see your post on the Internet! It's very interesting that you, an American, show so much love for Beijing Opera!
I'd like to be your pen friend, for I'm a senior high school student as you are and I'm crazy about Beijing Opera too. What's more, my dad is working as an actor in one of the Beijing Opera theaters. He is open minded as well as easy going. I'm sure my dad and I can be helpful.
I believe we will have much to share and can get along well with each other.
Please write back as soon as possible so that we can make a plan.
Yours sincerely,

Paragraph 1:
Why did Mrs Brown say her husband was really clever Because she found that he had written a notice which looked exactly like a police_notice. He made a_blue_board_with_white_letters on it,but it was not a real one. Being_afraid_of_going_to_prison,_Mr Brown certainly dared_not use the word “police”, but he used “polite notice” instead of “police notice”. He was quite clever, wasn't he
Paragraph 2:
If the police discovered that the Browns were using a police notice, they would feel angry and punish them. It was a crime because they offended the police, passing himself off as a policeman. But Mr Brown would remain very calm and ask the policemen to look at the board carefully. The policemen would burst out laughing when they realized what had happened.
