Listening to the radio is something that I really like to do. Whether it's to listen to my favorite songs, catch up on the latest news or just listen to something to help me relax, the radio is always there for me!
I'm surprised when talking to my students in school, to find out that many of them hardly ever listen to the radio because they think it's boring. I always listen to the radio when I'm driving my car or doing my homework. The radio can also be very useful for me as it often has traffic updates which tell me whether the road I want to use has a traffic jam on it.
There is a song by The Buggles called “Video Killed the Radio Star” which I used to listen to a lot and now it makes more sense to me. Have TV and the Internet taken the place of the radio for many people
Now that I am living in Germany I recently managed to get hold of an old radio for free and so now I like to listen to it when I'm getting ready in the morning and when I'm making my tea. Of course it can be annoying (讨厌的) when a song that I don't like comes on the radio but most of time I like the music that is played and it is also a good way for me to hear new songs. Listening to my new radio in German is good for my language learning because I can listen to the news, and also hear new German songs.
I've always listened to the radio since I was young and thought that it is a very popular way to listen to music and news, but after talking with my students I have found that might not be the case anymore. Whatever people think, you will still always find me dancing around my room listening to the radio !

My roommate Lily was well organised, while I was not. Each of her things had its place, but mine were always hidden somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签于) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Lily got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Lily came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming. “Take your shoes away ! Why under my bed !” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Lily answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy(同情) rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side.I got so lost in my work that I even didn't notice Lily had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression a kind of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”

Growing pains and gains
It's not easy to grow up. Actually it's far from easy. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren't allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel trapped, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don't understand why we can't stay young forever. When we look back on all the hardships in life with a positive attitude (态度), we realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!
As a young girl my parents forced my sisters and me to do so many things that I never liked. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music, just because it was what they wanted me to do. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I realize that my parents and teachers were always pushing me along, not because they wanted me to suffer but because they wanted me to succeed in life. They've always wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.
Every moment of our lives we are either living or dying, so live life to_its_fullest! We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just small pains in life. They might seem so huge at the time but we must be strong. Think about how we would feel if we had no fear and lived life like that. The future is ours! A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps (凸块) on our road to success we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!
9.According to Paragraph 1, we learn that when we are young,________.
A.life is full of joy
B.life is easy for us
C.we know we can stay young forever
D.we sometimes can't do things we like
10.When the author was young, she was forced by her parents to ________.
A.take music lessons
B.turn gains into pains
C.look back on hardships
D.live a successful life by suffering a lot
11.What does the underlined phrase “to its fullest”mean
A.Directly. B.Completely.
C.Carefully. D.Terribly.

One day Thomas Alva Edison was given a letter by his teacher. His teacher asked him to give it to his mother. Edison thought it was something nice. After he returned home, he proudly gave it to his mother, saying “My teacher let me give this letter to you.”
Not knowing what it was, Edison's mother opened it, and then her eyes opened wide. With tears in her eyes, she looked at her son and read out the letter aloud, “Your child is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn't have enough good teachers to train him. Please teach him yourself.”
The fact was that Edison liked asking strange questions in class. His teachers thought he was addled (头脑糊涂的). They could no longer stand him and decided to stop him from going to school. However, Edison's mother didn't give up on her son. She taught him at home.
After many years Edison's mother died and he was already one of the greatest inventors. One day he was looking through the old family things. Suddenly he saw a piece of folded paper in the corner of a drawer. He took it and opened it up. It read, “Your son is addled. We won't let him come to school any more.”
Edison cried for hours and then he wrote in his diary, “Thomas Alva Edison was an addled child, but, because of his hero mother, he becomes the genius of the century.”
Having faith in those we love is very important. We should have faith in those around us. Even if others have given up on you, you should have faith in yourself.
12.How did Edison's teachers like him
A.He wasn't hard to train.
B.He was really a genius.
C.He was too weak to go to school.
D.He wasn't a normal child.
13.What did Edison's mother do after knowing the teachers' decision
A.She asked him to invent things.
B.She sent him to another school.
C.She let him get educated at home.
D.She asked him to study by himself.
14.What is the passage meant to show us
A.Teachers should love their students.
B.Parents know their children the best.
C.We should have faith in others and ourselves.
D.Most children can be geniuses if encouraged.
15.How did Edison's mother probably feel when reading the letter
A.Relaxed. B.Sad.

Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues around. But in my heart I was sad because I couldn't stay_with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.
When Christmas morning came, I awoke to a small hand rubbing my face. “Dad, Merry_Christmas!”was all my_younger_son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got downstairs just to see the two little boys' faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection (检查) had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.
Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gifts, I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages constantly thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But I had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence with my absence from their Christmas these years.

Dear Peter,
How is everything going I'm writing to you in the hope of seeking for help.
Our school will hold an English dubbing contest on November 20th. I'm eager to have a try but have no idea which film is suitable. So I'm wondering if you'd give me some recommendations. According to the requirements, the theme should be about friendship. And each video may last 4 to 5 minutes.
I'd appreciate it if you could do me the favor. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,

Paragraph 1:
I had to admit that my disappointment was growing steadily. I was wondering whether I could get a gift when my_younger_son ran to me, who was really kind enough to save my face. He asked me to admire his gift which he deeply believed was carefully chosen by Santa Claus. He said happily that he would share some of the gifts of his and allow me to choose one from them. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart, still feeling disappointed.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly my wife walked up to me. It seemed that she had guessed how I felt. She asked me to look at the Christmas tree which was decorated with so many boxes. I thought she was showing off her efforts on the decoration but she took off a small box and passed it to me smiling and saying it was for me. I opened it and saw a letter which read “We will never forget you. Merry_Christmas!” Under the letter was a watch which was clicking with delight. I was moved to tears.
