(1) where ancient leaders tried to communicate with the gods是一个
定语从句,修饰a temple。若先行词是表示地点的名词,关系词
在从句中作状语,则用关系副词where引导定语从句。

(2) communicate with 意为“和……交流”。

prevent 意为“防止; 阻止;阻挠”,后面可跟名词或代词。
prevent sb. (from) doing sth. 意为“阻止某人做某事”。
