Step 1 Lead in “Different students have different problems”
T: When we are in Grade 9, different students face different teenage problems. Mr Wu did a survey about his students’ problems. Could you tell me their problems
These are object clauses. Can you tell me the structure of object clauses
Step 2 Presentation “Help the students solve their problems”
1. Millie: Sometimes I get low marks. I realize that it is important for me to improve my study.
T: Can you tell Millie why she sometimes gets low marks
Ss: I’m afraid (that) she...
T: Would you please give her some advice.
Ss: I think she had better/ should.../ I hope she can...
T: Good. Millie’s teachers also give her some advice. What did Miss Li said What did Mr Wu tell her
T: Let’s look at the first sentence. Why do we change “is” into “was”
S: Because of “said”.
T: Yes. You are right. When the main clause is simple past tense, we should use the past tenses in the object clause. Then we look at the sencond sentence. Here is “told”, why don’t we use “made” in object clause
T: Millie wants to improve her study, so she listens to Mr Friend’s talk on learning methods. Please help Mr Friend finish his speech.
2. Kitty: It seems that I like a boy in my class. I’m not sure whether/ if I should tell him my true feelings.
T: Kitty doesn’t know how to deal with her problem, so she writes to Mr Friend to ask for help. Please help her complete her letter.
T: we use whether/ if to introduce yes or no questions. Then we should pay attention to “it will”, “I can” and “you can”. What is the word order
Ss: Statement order.
T: Let’s pay attention to the sentence. Why do we use whether instead of if here
S: Because of “or nor”.
T: Yes, you’re right. Here are two more sentences. Please tell me “whether” or “if”
T: If you have the same problem, will you talk with your parents Who would you like to talk with
Ss: Friends.
T: So close friends are very important to us, right Mr Friend asks Millie something about her close friends. Please read their dialogue and answer the questions.
Q1: What does Mr Friend want to know
Mr Friend wants to know________________________________________________.
Q2: What is he thinking about
He is thinking about ____________________________________________________.
Q3: What isn’t he sure about
He is not sure_____________________________________________________ or not.
Q4: What did he ask Kitty
He asked Kitty ________________________________________________________.
3. Simon: I don’t understand why my parents don’t allow me to spend some time on my hobby.
Simon is talking about his problem with Mr Friend on Wechat. Can you complete the questions
T: Questions are introduced by wh-words in object clauses. We should use statement order. Then pay attention to “I’m wondering who often asks you to play basketball.” In the object clause, who is the subject, so we don’t need to change the the word order.
T: Can you give Simon some valuable advice.
Ss: I hope/ think/ I don’t think....
T: Simon is crazy about basketball. Simon’s friend Andy tells Simon about a baskeball final. Please read the dialogue and finish Simon’s diary.
Step 3 A quetionnaire about your teenage problems
Before class, we have done a questionnaire about our homework, hobbies and sleep. Now we can share one problem with our friends and try to give your friend some suggestions to deal with his/ her problems.
Example:
A: Can you tell me ...
B: ...
A: I'm wondering ....
B: ...
A: I want to know...
B: ...
A: I hope/ think/ believe...
I don't think...
I'm afraid/ I'm sure...
Step 4 Conclusion
When you feel tired,
you may wonder whether it is worth working so hard.
When you have difficulties,
you may doubt if you can reach your goal.
When you make a mistake,
you may not understand why your parents are so strict with you.
Remember that it is you who shape your life and future.
So try your best to be a better you.
