Dykes had completed about 2,430 miles, and all he needed to do was cover the next 1,550 miles in 187 days or less to complete the whole journey.
On August 26 last year, a three-man team, including two guides and a horse, hit the road at the starting point, the source of the Yangtze River in the south of Qinghai Province. Then at different times for the next two months, different people had come to join them.
In order to cross the plateau (高原) and mountains in good weather, the journey was planned to start in summer. However, because of the problems in preparations, Dykes arrived in Qinghai in late August as the days were becoming shorter and colder. Not wanting to wait for another year, he decided to continue.
Within a few days three of the adventurers experienced serious high altitude sickness (高原反应). In the mountains, the team had to light fire to scare off bears, and once they had been followed by a group of wolves for two days. They were forced to quit the journey. In fact, Dykes has been walking alone since late October.
“The rest of the trip would be much easier,” Dykes said. He started from Chongqing on the second half of the journey on March 11. At the same time,he called on more people to join him in some parts of the trek as a way to encourage environmental protection.
“Travelling along the Yangtze River is not only a great act, it’s also a chance to enjoy the true beauty and wonders of China, and attract people’s attention to the environment and good work to protect it,” he wrote on his Weibo. “However, the kindness and warmth of the local people have struck me so much that it is they that make the journey unforgettable.”

Laptop (便携式) computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains, airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork at anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110 year old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the more important of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to the computer lab. They can work with it at home, in a fast food restaurant or under the trees — anywhere at all.
Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptops used in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries, and other resources. State higher education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are testing laptop programs at other universities as well.
At Westlake college, more than 60 percent of the staff use the computers. The laptops will allow teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we are giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

Being in the school's science lab can be exciting, because you're doing something different from sitting at your desk listening to your teacher. But fun as lab work is, you have to observe the safety rules if you don't want to hurt yourself or your lab partner.
The first rule is to behave responsibly in the laboratory at all times. When your teacher is showing you lab equipment, listen to what he is telling you, because some of the equipment can be dangerous. Become familiar with your lab assignment (任务) before you start doing it. This means reading everything the teacher has written down and asking questions if you don't understand an instruction or a term. Do not try to work alone. If your partner is absent, let your teacher know so she can assign another student to work with you. And don't do any other experiments other than what you have been assigned. Wear your lab apron (围裙) and safety goggles (护目镜) whenever you are working on a lab assignment. On lab days, wear old clothing that you won't mind getting damaged. Make sure this clothing covers as much of your skin as possible. Keep your hands away from your skin, face, eyes and mouth when you are working with dangerous chemicals. You will be working with fire in the lab with an alcohol lamp. Use gloves when handling hot lab equipment. If you have long hair, pull it back in a ponytail (马尾辫) and roll up long sleeves. Don't put paper, chemicals, lab equipment or any part of your body in the flame. When you use a sharp instrument, treat it with care. Do not point it at yourself or any one of your fellow classmates during the experiment.

“Smile!” I shouted, holding a yellow sign up on a busy street in Seattle. We are three thousand miles away from home on a Random Acts of Kindness and Volunteerism Road Trip. We had two aims. One was to try out our new “Smile!” signs and see how much kindness and joy we could spread in Pike Place Market. The other was to raise $80 by doing street performances, enough for gas to Portland and a small hotel room.
We weren't sure how people would react to our signs. I nervously raised up our signs and shouted, “Hi, there!” to a young couple. They looked over and felt confused. Then they read our signs and broke into a smile. Before long, some tourists wanted to take a photo with us and some strangers stopped to ask us about our signs.
In fact, we paid so close attention to our “Smile!” project that we forgot the other aim. Before we knew it, the sun was setting, and we had no money for our trip to Portland. We sat down to watch a blind musician play the guitar while thinking about what to do. He was packing up when a passing crowd kicked down his change bowl. He stumbled (绊倒) into the crowd. We rushed to help him, but another man moved more quickly to help him.
Once the musician had his money safely returned, we ran over to meet the strange helper and said, “We just wanted to praise you for your good deed.” He smiled, looking at our signs. “Your trip reminds me of something similar I once did when I was young,” he said, “Look! I'd like to donate (捐赠).” We told him, “No, thanks! We are fine. We've collected plenty of money.” We lied. “Please let me donate. It will make me feel like I'm a part of this adventure,” he insisted. And then the stranger opened his wallet and pulled out four $20 bills. The money was exactly what we had intended to raise that day. We were astonished. It seemed as if he had known somehow.
32.What's the main purpose of the road trip
A.To spread kindness and joy.
B.To invite more people to join in the trip.
C.To raise money for a trip to Portland.
D.To encourage people to take happy photos.
33.How did people react to the “Smile!” signs later
A.Disappointed. B.Worried.
C.Interested. D.Moved.
34.According to the last paragraph, why did the strange helper want to donate money
A.Because he felt pity for the author.
B.Because he wanted to join in the project.
C.Because he hoped to help the homeless.
D.Because he felt sorry for his impoliteness.
35.What does the underlined word “astonished” in the last paragraph most probably mean
A.Tired. B.Satisfied.
C.Frightened. D.Surprised.

The cheerful girl, Jenny, with golden hair was almost five. Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw a necklace of shining white pearls in a pink metal box. Quickly the mother checked the back of the little metal box and then looked back into the begging blue eyes of her little girl's upturned face. “A dollar and ninety five cents. That's almost $2. If you really want it, I'll think of some extra housework for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy it for yourself. Besides, you might get another dollar bill from Grandma on your birthday a week away.”
After dinner back home, she did more housework and even she asked the neighbor for housework for ten cents. On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at least she had enough money to buy the cheap necklace from the dime store (廉价商店).
Jenny loved her pearl necklace. She wore it everywhere. The only time she took it off was when swimming.
Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, “Do you love me?”
“Oh, daddy. You know that I love you.”
“Then give me your necklace.”
“Oh, daddy, not my pearl necklace. But you can have my Barbie doll — the one you gave me. She's my favorite.”
“That's okay, Honey. Daddy loves you. Good night.” And he brushed her cheek with a kiss.
Daddy repeated the same request about a week after the story time. However, Jenny refused and wouldn't give up her necklace to her daddy.
