第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
“Tell me the story of me, Momma,” my daughter Sophie always asks when we sit on my grandmother’s rocking chair at the end of the day. “The first time I saw your beautiful face, it was nearly covered by a blue-and-white hat. You were surrounded by a soft blue blanket (毛毯). All I could see was a rosy face.” “And I looked like a tiny fairy baby ” she asks. “You did, and you weren’t older than a minute,” I always answer. “The nurse handed a tiny little girl to me, and I was so surprised because you felt so light. I thought if I threw off the blanket, I’d find no baby there at all, only air.”
From that moment, I became a mother. But that moment was just special and magical as if she’d come from my body directly into my arms. From that day on, she was my daughter in every way that mattered.
It’s easy sometimes to forget there was another mother out there with whom I share my title. Sophie’s birth mother, who was also my friend, lost her life to cancer not long after giving birth to Sophie. And I’ll never forget that it was her difficult decision — her tears and her pain — that made me a mom.
As my daughter grows, she will understand that sometimes life is a relay race (接力赛), and you never know who in this world will hand you your baton (接力棒). It could be someone you know for years, or it could be someone who you even never meet, someone you will never be able to repay for giving you the life you always wanted.
21. How does the author start the text
A. By remembering her grandmother.
B. By asking her daughter questions.
C. By describing her past life.
D. By showing a conversation.
22. What can we learn about Sophie
A. She was given up by her birth mother.
B. She and the author aren’t related by blood.
C. She had a hard time growing up.
D. She hated her birth mother.
23. How does the author feel towards Sophie’s birth mother
A. Disappointed.
B. Worried.
C. Thankful.
D. Surprised.

A medical study has shown that excess (过度的) coffee drinking could cause heart attacks in people who do not metabolize (使新陈代谢) caffeine fast enough.
The study, published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association, says an enzyme (酶) that metabolizes caffeine in the liver works differently in some people, depending on the make up of the gene. People who have a slow version of the enzyme are at a greater risk of a heart attack when they drink more coffee. The risk had something to do with a person's age and how many cups of coffee he drinks.
The team from the University of Toronto in Canada studied 4,024 people living in coffee rich Costa Rica between 1994 and 2004, of whom half suffered non fatal (非致命的) heart attacks. They found slightly more than half had the slow version of the gene, while the rest had the fast form.
Two to three cups of coffee a day increased the possibilities of a heart attack by 36 percent for those with the slow acting gene and four or more cups a day lifted it by 64 percent.
But those under 50 who had the fast version of the gene had a lower risk of heart disease, even with four or more cups a day.
Those with the fast acting gene who drank two to three cups of coffee a day had 22 percent reduced possibilities of having a heart attack, but drinking four or more cups a day only lessened the risk by 1 percent. Scientists recommend limiting coffee consumption (消耗量) to within four cups a day.
24.People who have a slow version of the enzyme ________.
A.are in danger when they drink coffee
B.are living in coffee rich Costa Rica
C.have the slow version of the gene
D.cannot drink four or more cups of coffee a day
25.The example of Costa Rica the author presented in the passage proves that ________.
A.the heart attack in Costa Rica is really serious
B.the heart problem has something to do with drinking coffee
C.people in Costa Rica cannot metabolize caffeine in the liver
D.more than half people have the slow version of gene
26.It can be concluded that the passage is most probably written for ________.
A.doctors who study heart disease
B.specialists who offer medical care
C.old people who have the slow version of the gene
D.those who love drinking coffee every day
27.What is the best title for this passage
A.Coffee and Heart Attacks
B.Gene and Heart Disease
C.Caffeine and Enzyme
D.Reasons for Heart Problems

Up and down the economic ladder, many Americans who work — and especially those raising kids — are pressed for time, wishing they had more of it to devote to leisure activities (or even just sleeping). At the same time, research has indicated that people who are busy tend to be happier than those who are idle, whether their busyness is purposeful or not.
A research paper released late last year investigated this trade off, attempting to pinpoint (精确指出)how much leisure time is best. Its authors examined the relationship between the amount of “discretionary time” people had — basically, how much time people spend awake and doing what they want — and how pleased they were with their lives.
The paper, which analyzed data covering about 35,000 Americans, found that employed people's ratings of their satisfaction with life peaked when they had in the neighborhood of two and a half hours of free time a day. For people who didn't work, the best amount was four hours and 45 minutes.
The research traced a relationship between free time and life satisfaction, but didn't provide any final insight into what underlies that correlation — “which is exciting, because this is a work in progress,” says Cassie Mogilner Holmes, a professor at UCLA's Anderson School of Management and a co author of the paper, which hasn't yet been peer reviewed or published in an academic journal.
An experiment that the researchers arranged hinted at (暗示) a possible explanation of the correlation they found. They asked participants to picture and describe what it would be like to have a certain amount of daily free time, and then report how they'd feel about that allotment (分配). “What we find is that having too little time makes people feel stressed, and maybe that's obvious.” says Holmes. “But interestingly, that effect goes away — the role of stress goes away — once you approach the optimal point.” After that point, Holmes says, the subjects started to say they felt less productive overall, which could explain why having a lot of free time can feel like having too much free time.
It's not clear what an individual is to do with these findings, since the amount of free time people have usually has something to do with a variety of factors, such as having children or a degree of control over work schedules. Holmes shared her research with the MBA students in her class on happiness, and some of the most time crunched among them were comforted by the findings:“I think that two and a half hours creates a nice goal that even if you increase a little bit more of your discretionary time use, you can expect that it will translate into greater life satisfaction.”
28.According to the passage, what happens to Americans occupied with their work
A.They allow themselves more leisure time.
B.They keep themselves busy on purpose.
C.They know how much leisure time is best.
D.They experience higher level of satisfaction.
29.What can be learned about the relationship between free time and life satisfaction
A.Researchers have cast light on the cause of the correlation.
B.Unemployed people need more leisure time to feel content.
C.The paper on the correlation has achieved peer recognition.
D.Employed people enjoy more leisure time in the neighborhood.
30.Which of the following charts illustrates the change of stress and productivity
31.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ____________.
A.Holmes is optimistic about the influence of her findings
B.individuals are encouraged to control their work schedules
C.people with tight schedules can't benefit from the findings
D.the MBA students find no free time to obtain life satisfaction
D
Daily physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. For this reason, many architects and designers are working to create buildings that encourage people to make exercise a part of their ordinary routine. The movement to promote healthy activity through architecture is called active design. It began in 1998 as part of a university public health program, and it has since gained popularity in cities around the world. Active design uses a number of techniques to encourage the occupants of a building to be more active.
One of the most important strategies of active design is inspiring people to make walking part of their routine. A particularly successful tool for promoting walking is the skip stop elevator. These elevators stop only on every second or third floor, leaving riders to take the stairs in order to reach their destination. Another strategy of active design is to make stairs more pleasant and inviting. Instead of creating dark stairwells that are located in isolated parts of buildings, active design uses well lit and centrally placed stairs to encourage more foot traffic. Skip stop elevators and appealing stair design are both effective tools of active design because they offer incentive and opportunity for exercise. In fact, researchers studying a building that employs both skip stop elevators and more attractive stair design said that 70 percent of building occupants reported using the stairs every day.
Active design encourages physical activity using not only the interior features of a building, but the relationship between a building and its surroundings as well. A building that employs active design may integrate outdoor space in order to make the environment more engaging and promote physical activity. Some elements that architects use to incorporate the exterior with the interior are glass walls, interior gardens or park spaces, and courtyards with open ceilings, all of which de emphasize the boundaries between inside and outside. These elements make the building more physically and mentally invigorating. Similarly, by increasing the number of entrances and exits to a building, architects can help keep a building's users interested in their surroundings by providing a variety of routes for them to use. If people continue to be stimulated by new sights or experiences, they are less likely to choose the quickest and easiest path to their destination and may instead choose a more physically challenging route.
32.What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Requirement. B.Encouragement.
C.Technique. D.Assistance.
33.Why does the author discuss dark stairwells in Paragraph 2
A.To demonstrate the differences between elevator and stairwell design.
B.To describe one advantage of using skip stop elevators in buildings.
C.To make a point about why people don't use the stairs often.
D.To argue that skip stop elevators may lead to design failures.
34.Which of the following is NOT a way that architects weaken the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces
A.Creating more routes for entering and exiting.
B.Building gardens inside the building.
C.Creating spaces with open ceilings.
D.Using see through materials.
35. How does Paragraph 2 relate to Paragraph 3 in the passage
A.Para 2 describes an early model of a design discussed in para 3.
B.Para 3 argues about the effectiveness of the technique from para 2.
C.Para 3 introduces a different strategy than the one discussed in para 2.
D.Para 2 explains a technique, and para 3 gives examples of how it is used.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
We went to Darjelling during the summer holidays and booked a cottage (农舍) for our stay. Our cook Gopi came with us because we could not do without home cooked meals.
Usually all the shopping was done by our home help — Bharat, who had accompanied (陪伴) us to our holiday destination. However, one early evening, my mother decided to do all the vegetable shopping by herself. She believed that Bharat did not wait to check the really fresh items and instead, bought randomly in a hurry. As a result, the vegetables he brought back were not fresh.
After getting ready, she took her favorite purse with quite an amount of money, thinking she could go to other shops too after finishing at the vegetable market. My mother asked Bharat to get a rickshaw for her and on reaching the market, she asked the rickshaw wallah (人力车车夫) to wait for her. She took a coolie and did her shopping happily, choosing some of the freshest green vegetables available there. At last, her shopping was done. She returned to the rickshaw and sat on it while the coolie put all the things my mother had bought onto the rickshaw.
On reaching home, Bharat took all the packets of vegetables inside and my mother quickly paid the rickshaw wallah and got off, forgetting to collect her purse from the seat of the rickshaw. The rickshaw wallah left soon after saying goodbye to my mother. All of us greeted my mother and asked her about her evening of shopping with much delight.
Then we began to help my mother prepare our dinner. My father came to help chop the meat; I helped wash the vegetables; we were talking and laughing. When dinner was about to be announced, it was late in the evening, almost 9 p.m.

Dear Jack,
Glad to receive your letter. I like Michael Jordan best, who I think is the greatest basketball player of all time.
As a basketball fan, I admire Michael Jordan for his brilliant basketball skills. What’s more, I like his spirit of never giving up in the face of repeated failures. He said, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. I’ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
Michael Jordan is not only my favourite sports star but also the best role model in my life.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
Then my mom realized her purse was missing. She looked everywhere for it and suddenly remembered that after paying the rickshaw wallah, she kept the purse on the seat before getting off. She had forgotten to pick up her purse which contained a lot of money. When my father came to know about this, he said that it was too late to look for the rickshaw wallah. We all decided that it was better to forget it. Mom felt sad and worried while sitting for dinner.
Paragraph 2:
We were just about to begin eating when the door bell rang. Bharat opened the door and called my mother to see who it was. To our surprise, it was the poor rickshaw wallah standing at our entrance with a big smile on his weather beaten face. He had the purse in his hand. He explained that he had returned to the market before he realized what had happened. When my mother opened her purse, she found all the cash in it. We wanted to reward the lovely man but he smiled and said,“Madam, I'm poor but not a thief”and went away quickly.
