About 400 people were brought together in some 20 positions throughout Stanford to carry out an earthquake drill (演习).
The earthquake drill was a year in the planning. It included both Stanford University and Stanford Medicine emergency operation (行动) centers. The university frequently practices emergency plans, but this drill was different from the earlier ones.
This drill asked the university to consider how everyone in the school took on duty after an earthquake. How would Stanford continue to feed thousands of people and take action in the face of damage to the university How would it answer the thousands of people who called the university and who were worried about their loved ones
“We wanted to create an experience centering mainly on recovery (恢 复), rather than the immediate life safety you would experience right after an earthquake,” said Keith Perry, university emergency manager and training and communications manager for Environmental Health and Safety.
The actions of all the people surprised Police Chief Laura Wilson, whose job was to manage the many people in the main EOC in the Faculty Club. “I really wanted to express my thanks to the teamwork of everyone,” she said. “My job was made much easier by the fact that people practice and know what to do. This is a finely honed (打磨) machine.”
Peter is an experienced worker of Stanford Medicine EOC. He believes that with each drill carried out, people get better at protecting public safety, repairing the damage to the university and quickly returning the university to normal teaching and researching activities. “I think everyone learned a lot today,” he said.

24. What’s Peter’s attitude to earthquake drills

Suddenly another thought went through Kate's mind like an electric shock. An express train was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream “Someone must go to the station and warn the stationmaster,” Kate thought. But who was to go She would have to go herself. There was no one else.
In wind and rain she started on her difficult way. Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River, a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek.
The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it. She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper(枕木) to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, into the rapidly flowing stream.
At last — she never knew how long it had taken her — she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately the stationmaster was standing outside. “The bridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shouted breathlessly. The stationmaster went pale. He rushed into the station building and came back with a signal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second too early.
25.What did Kate decide to do
A.Visit the stationmaster.
B.Check the signal light.
C.Meet the passengers.
D.Stop the express train.
26.Which of the following words best describes Kate's journey
A.Fruitless. B.Risky.
C.Well planned. D.Boring.
27.Why did the stationmaster turn pale
A.He suddenly fell ill.
B.He realized the danger.
C.He discovered his mistake.
D.He became overexcited.

Mandara seemed to know something big was about to happen. So she let out a yell, caught hold of her 2 year old daughter Kibibi and climbed up into a tree. She lives at the National Zoo in Washington D.C.
And on Tuesday, August 23rd, witnesses said she seemed to sense the big earthquake that shook much of the East Coast before any humans knew what was going on. And she's not the only one. In the moments before the quake, an orangutan(猩猩) let out a loud call and then climbed to the top of her shelter.
“It's very different from their normal call,” said Brandie Smith, the zookeeper. “The lemurs (monkey like animals of Madagascar) will sound an alarm if they see or hear something highly unusual.”
But you can't see or hear an earthquake 15 minutes before it happens, can you Maybe you can — if you're an animal.
“Animals can hear above and below our range of hearing,” said Brandie Smith. “That's part of their special abilities. They're more sensitive to the environment, which is how they survive.”
Primates weren't the only animals that seemed to sense the quake before it happened. One of the elephants made a warning sound and a huge lizard (蜥蜴) ran quickly for cover. The flamingoes (a kind of birds) gathered before the quake and stayed together until the shaking stopped.
So what kind of vibrations (震动) were the animals picking up in the moments before the quake Scientist Susan Hough said earthquakes produce two types of waves — a weak “P” wave and then a much stronger “S” wave. The “P” stands for “primary”. And the “S” stands for “secondary”. She thinks the “P” wave might be what sets the animals off.
Not all the animals behaved unusually before the quake. For example, Smith said the zoo's giant pandas didn't jump up until the shaking actually began. But many of the other animals seemed to know something was coming before it happened. “I'm not surprised at all,” Smith said.
28.Why did Mandara act strangely one day
A.Because it sensed something unusual would happen.
B.Because its daughter Kibibi was injured.
C.Because it heard an orangutan let out a loud call.
D.Because an earthquake had happened.
29.According to Brandie Smith, ________.
A.many animals' hearing is sharp
B.earthquakes produce two types of waves
C.primates usually gather together before a quake
D.humans can also develop the ability to sense a quake
30.Which animal seems unable to sense quake
A.A giant panda. B.A flamingo.
C.A lemur. D.A lizard.
31.What is the best title for the passage
A.How Animals Survive a Quake
B.How Animals Differ from Humans
C.How Animals Behave Before a Quake
D.How Animals Protect Their Young in a Quake

On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication that severe weather was on its way — the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the presidential primary debate I had been watching to our local Pensacola, Florida, station.
No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. The wind began to roar through the house, most likely through blown out windows and the door to our garage. We had three flights of steps to navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor, because the cupboard down there is underneath a brick staircase.
I didn't know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet. I tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place.
As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Pieces of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere. Suddenly, a three foot long tree branch crashed into the door frame. It flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have hit us.
By the time I reached the cupboard, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the cupboard floor, but he couldn't get inside himself because of the wind. I held Jimmy's arm and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees were full of glass, but at that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.
All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn't believe it was over, Jimmy said he'd go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don't leave me. Don't leave me.”
Our neighbor said the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured.
32.Where did the husband first get the warning information about the tornado
A.From the weather forecast.
B.From a movie he was watching.
C.From the local broadcast station.
D.From the moving words on a TV programme.
33.What does the underlined word “coverage” mean
A.Power. B.Description.
C.Arrival. D.Delay.
34.Why didn't the wife feel pain
A.Because she didn't get any hurt when the storm hit.
B.Because she was too scared to feel pain.
C.Because she used all her strength to hold on to her husband.
D.Because she had reached the cupboard and she was safe.
35.What's the author's purpose by writing the passage
A.To share with us her experience of surviving a tornado.
B.To warn us of the danger caused by tornados.
C.To show us how to fight against a tornado.
D.To tell us how to protect us from dangerous tornados.

Climate change (气候变化) influences people in many ways. Extreme weather and sea-level rise can destroy homes. People can suffer physical harm from the effects of rising greenhouse gases. 36 And children and teens are especially at risk of suffering from such mental problems, according to a new report.
“The brains of children and teens are still growing and developing,” says Lise Van Susteren. She is an expert on the mental-health effects of climate change. Those growing brains make young people especially easily influenced by climate change. For example, many kids worry that the influences of climate change are expected to only worsen. 37 Not every young person will have these feelings. But for many, the feelings can get in the way of their normal life.
Luckily, there are things the young can do to deal with bad feelings. For example, Van Susteren advises, “ 38 These are people who can help you let these feelings out.”
Susie Burke is an expert providing mental health care in Melbourne, Australia.
39 Playing outside can help children keep calm. It can also improve someone’s ability to pay full attention to things.
40 For example, 14-year-old Milou Albrecht is an activist (积极分子). Since last year, she has been one of the members of Australia’s energy-saving programs. Milou says doing something to stop climate change helps her relax to some degree.
A. Talk with your friends or families.
B. She encourages students to get out in nature.
C. No part of the world has been left untouched.
D. The most important thing is to have a sense of hope.
E. It’s also a great way to take action to protect the environment.
F. But climate change can also be bad for people’s mental health.
G. This can cause feelings of sadness, fear, worry and nervousness.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
I guess everyone would like to set off for a journey with someone we can understand and have fun with. TRAVELLING WITH A COMPANION (同伴)
IS GREAT!
It’s good to have someone with you who can watch your backpack when you want to use the toilet, find the way back home when you get lost, carry some of your luggage (行李) when you’re tired, take some photos of you when you want and help you in all kinds of situations. The feeling of having someone by your side makes you feel less stressful about many things.
With a companion, you can together share the beautiful moments during the travels, experience the same things in a different way and support each other. It’s much more interesting and exciting when you have the chance to share something with someone while on your road. At the same time, there is always someone whom you can shout at when you are angry, or a shoulder on which you can cry when you miss your home.
A companion can share the costs with you. You can stay in one room, buy a dinner, have it together and share the bill, etc. It’s good to travel with someone who has the same or similar pattern of payment as you so you can support each other without having any arguments (争吵).
Having a companion by your side when travelling means less loneliness. You don’t think about it unless you get left in the middle of nowhere, far away from your friends and family. Then you wish to have someone with you.
In short, travelling with someone is the best choice for people who are short of travel experience or just social animals and easily miss their home. We might sometimes feel like being on our own and enjoy the sights with nobody behind our back but at the end of the day you have much more fun when being with someone, especially for a long run.

In February, 2005, my uncle Phillip was teaching his seventh grade students a poem called Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. He liked the poem very much, so he recorded it on his home answering machine. When Phillip and his family returned home from their vacation, he listened to his voice messages. One old man said he dialed the wrong number. But, he added, he'd really enjoyed the poem. A few days later, that old man called. He said that he wanted to hear the poem again. The two men talked. John, now 73, who used to be a doctor, lived in another state. It turned out that his brother's number was almost the same as my uncle's. That was 13 years ago. They've spoken on the phone a few times a month ever since. They haven't gone to a game together or had a cup of coffee together. Their friendship is just to pick up the phone. And to them their best friend is someone they've never met.
