Unit 4 Integrated skills
Let's interpret a classic poem
by Robert Frost!
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh , I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
The Road Not Taken
Robert Frost
Step 1 I can feel the sound!
Listen and circle out rhymes and repeated words.
Which image comes into your mind What are the words that help you see the image
Step 2 I can picture the images!
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Step 3 I can figure out the meaning!
Stanza 1
What problem was the speaker faced with What did the speaker do then
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
Stanzas 2-3
Step 3 I can figure out the meaning!
1.Which road did the speaker finally take What did this tell us about the speaker
2. Were the two roads very different
3. Did the speaker believe that he would turn back to the other way one day Why or why not
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh , I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
What did the speaker think of his decision
A. He regretted his decision.
B. He just thought it was a pity that he couldn't take both roads.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Stanza 4

Have you ever had to make a difficult decision in your life
What new understanding do you have about your decision after reading the poem
Step 5 I can reflect on my life!
It's hard to make decisions, yet it's even harder to stick to our decisions. Instead of looking back to the road not taken with regret, we should enjoy the scenery on the chosen road and move forward despite challenges.
