ONE
Profile
She is a famous American linguist, who has profound attainments in phonetics and psycho neurolinguistics.
She once served as President of the American Language Society (1985) and Vice President of the University of California, Los Angeles.
She is a respected leader in American linguistics. She was the president of the American Language Society in 1985.
She served as the vice president of the American Computational Language Society, member of the National Council for Basic Research in Behavioral Science and Social Materials of the National Academy of Sciences, member of the Council of the American Association for Science and Technology,
academician of the American Acoustical Society, academician of the New York Academy of Sciences and other important positions, and also served as the review member of the linguistics section in organizations such as the National Science Foundation of the United States.
She also served as a visiting professor and researcher in many famous universities and research institutions at home and abroad.
TWO
Academic Path
She was first engaged in the research of physiological phonetics. Using various advanced scientific instruments, she explored the physiological pronunciation basis of various phonetic units and features from the position, shape and muscle current of the vocal organs such as lips, tongue and glottis, and then explained the complex relationships between phonetics and phonology at a higher level.
Professor Fromkin's research on tone phonetics and phonology is particularly remarkable.
Fromkin has collected the main research methods and achievements in the field of tone research in the international linguistic community, representing the latest progress in this field.
Since the 1970s, Fromkin's research field has expanded to psycho neurolinguistics, focusing on exploring the underlying human brain mechanisms underlying language acquisition and language use, and inferring and judging the relationship between human language ability and other cognitive abilities, such as logical reasoning ability, mathematical computing ability, etc.
Although the association between brain damage and language function defects was noticed more than 2000 years ago, it is only in the last 20 or 30 years that systematic research in this field has been carried out in a theoretical and methodical way.
Fromkin's research work in this field is basically carried out in the framework of Chomsky's linguistic theory.
UG grammar
Universal Grammar
Chomsky proposed that UG is a component structure, which is composed of several independent but interrelated parts. Chomsky collected a large number of language materials from various aphasics, dyslexia patients and people with language dysfunction for analysis, so as to infer the relationship between language ability and other cognitive abilities, as well as the relationship between various components of UG.
THREE
Academic Contributions
Her research results have proved that human language ability is relatively independent of other cognitive abilities to some extent.
Her latest research revealed the organic connection of various parts of the lexicon in the human brain.
Her evidence is sufficient, her argument is rigorous, and her results are highly reliable. It is recognized that Fromkin is at the forefront of the world in the field of psycho neurolinguistic research aimed at exploring the essential characteristics of UG.
The textbook she co-authored with Professor Rodman is the most popular introduction to linguistics in North America, and has been translated into Japanese, Dutch and other languages. For the cultivation of postgraduates, Professor Fromkin took more pains to study the famous S Professor Curtiss is Professor Fromkin.
FOUR
Critique
Professor Fromkin is a teacher who loves teaching and teaches tirelessly. Just in her capacity as the vice president of the University of California, Los Angeles, she can completely discharge all teaching tasks and devote all her energy to scientific research and administration. However, she did not want to leave the students, and often volunteered to take the introductory course of linguistics for the first year of undergraduate students.
Many professors regard the large class with 500 people as a burden, but she never tires of it and enjoys it.
Professor Fromkin has always had deep feelings for China. She was one of the first linguists' delegations to China sent by the National Academy of Sciences in 1974, not long after the Sino US relations were thawed.
The warm hospitality of the Chinese people, the magnificent beauty of China's rivers and mountains, and the achievements made by Chinese linguists under very difficult conditions at that time left her with very deep impressions and good memories.
