Simone Biles was born in 1997. Soon, her parents found that she couldn’t sit still. When she was 6 years old,
her day-care group went on a field trip to a gym. Simone loved watching the gymnasts train and performances. She
couldn’t just watch them, though — she had to try their moves. She was so good that one of the coaches sent a
letter home with her, inviting Simone to take gymnastics classes.
Simone loved the classes, and she was excellent at climbing, swinging, jumping, and tumbling ( 翻筋斗 ).
Though she had a lot to learn, the coaches could hardly keep up with Simone. When one girl performed a standing
back tuck (翻折), Simone was sure she could do one too. Her coach didn’t believe her, so Simone tried the trick
and made it on the spot.
At 9, Simone learned why she couldn’t sit still: She had ADHD( 多动症). Her brain moved fast and her body
did too — which made it hard for her to concentrate in school but which also made her an amazing gymnast. “The
challenges we face help define who we are,” Simone wrote. “My challenge is also my superpower.” Simone’s
superpower would help make her one of the most dynamic gymnasts ever seen.
Simone is one of the greatest athletes in history. At age 16, she won two gold medals at the Artistic
Gymnastics World Championships(AGWC), including the all-around (the total score from competing in all events).
She has now won 25 world medals, 19 of them gold. That’s the most in world gymnastics history.
Simone competed in her first Olympics in 2016. She was the first female U.S. gymnast to win four gold medals
in an Olympic Games. Since then, Simone has debuted (首次呈现) some moves never successfully done in world
competitions, including a double-double dismount (下马) from the balance beam. The move became known as the
Biles. Several signature moves have been named after Simone.
24. Who found Simone Biles’ gymnastics talent
A. Her parents. B. A tour guide. C. A gymnastics coach. D. Her kindergarten teacher.
25. What brought Simone the gift of gymnastics
A. A disease. B. An accident. C. A superpower. D. A family tradition.
26. Which is one of Simone Biles’ achievements
A. She has now won 25 world gold medals. B. She won two gold medals at AGWC in 2013.
C. Some competitions are named after Simone. D. She competed in her first Olympics at 21.
27. Why are some signature moves named after Simone Biles

In Billings, Montana, some healthcare experts are using 3D printers to make reusable plastic masks. What
makes them special is that the masks are then fitted with pieces of surgical( 外科的) masks which can be replaced
when needed.
“The surgical masks are cut into smaller squares that can be filled into the plastic mask to serve as a filter
(过滤器) ,”said Dusty Richardson, a surgeon at the Billings Clinic. “The filter can be used for a day and you
can substitute it the next day, but I do wash it for the next use,” Richardson added. The plastic mask and filter can
be cleaned with soap, bleach (a chemical that is used to make something become white) and other cleaning
chemicals. Richardson believes healthcare workers can get six to ten uses out of a single surgical mask.
Richardson came up with a prototype(原型 ) of the mask and worked with surgeon Spencer Zaugg and
Spencer’s son Colton to make the design become a reality. They’re all really into 3D printing and Colton has
design experience and was able to adapt a pattern he found online.
“Spencer and Colton have four 3D printers,” Richardson said. “They have created at least 15 masks so far.”
Public schools in Billings are closed because of COVID-19, but some teachers went back into their classrooms on
Monday to start printing out masks on their schools’ 3D printer. It takes a few hours to print a single mask.
Richardson said the files and instructions are posted online so anyone can make the masks on their own 3D
printer. “I got a text from someone who printed one out in Scotland and is even working on it overseas,”
Richardson said.
They’ve already made one huge improvement to their design. A company called HiTech Filters heard about
the project and said that they could mass-produce filters using hospital-grade high-efficiency material quickly
without wasting precious surgical masks.
“We’re just trying to help people here,” Richardson said. “We want healthcare providers and patients to be
safe.”
28. What is the biggest feature of the reusable plastic mask
A. It is in the shape of a square.
B. It is made of natural harmless chemicals.
C. It contains surgical mask pieces serving as filters.
D. It can be cleaned with some chemicals other than soap.
29. In paragraph 2, the underlined word “substitute” refers to _____________.
A. produce B. remove C. purchase D. replace
30. What can we learn about the reusable plastic mask from the text
A. It receives negative comments online. B. It is easy to make and has attracted much attention.
C. Its production instructions are kept secret. D. Its application is considered impractical by others.
31. Which word can best describe Richardson
A. responsible B. courageous C. independent D. arrogant
D
One of the most powerful social desires expressed by teenagers is to be thought of as cool and popular by their
peers(同龄人), which is quite natural. Often, the terms “cool” and “popular” get used interchangeably as if they
were just different labels for the same perception. On closer examination, however, it becomes clear that they are
quite different and have a fairly complicated relationship with each other.
Let’s start by examining what popularity is all about. At first glance, popularity is easy to define and recognize:
A popular person is an individual who is well-known, well-liked, and admired by others. However, the sources of
the social power possessed by popular people can be quite different. Specifically, sociometric popularity (SP)
primarily reflects “likeability” and it is linked with qualities such as being kind and trustworthy. However, peer-
perceived popularity (PP) is based upon a judgment of how popular others think that person is among his or her
peers. It reflects what we might call “status” and is often related with less desirable qualities such as being
dominant, aggressive, or “stuck-up”.
So, popularity is a more complicated concept than it may seem. As complicated as popularity is, coolness is
even more so.
Coolness is a broader category than popularity. One can be cool by having cool stuff, by doing cool stuff, or
by just plain “being cool”. It is a combination of self-presentation, fashion, and attitude. It’s pushback against
norms and authority that may label itself as not caring about traditional routes to success such as academic
achievement and being “too cool for school”.
Hence, coolness and popularity represent two completely independent terms. The pursuit of being cool and
popular will probably always be part of the human experience, especially among young people. In and of itself, this
is neither good nor bad. But it may be useful to be aware of the differences in these qualities and be clear about
exactly what it is that we are pursuing.
32. What is a common understanding of coolness and popularity
A. They contradict each other. B. They share a complex connection.
C. They are simply the same concept. D. They can only be owned by the young.
33. Why does the author mention SP and PP in paragraph 3
A. To make a proposal. B. To illustrate(阐述) a concept.
C. To classify popularity. D. To list typical qualities.
34. Which can be regarded as being cool
A. Following suit. B. Prioritizing others.
C. Observing traditions. D. Challenging authority.
35. What does the author think of the pursuit of coolness and popularity
A. It’s unblamable. B. It’s rewarding.
C. It’s undesirable. D. It’s shameful.
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Fat is an important part of all living things and most body fat in animals and people is white. White fat allows
people to eat more than they need when food is enough. It stores those extra calories until food becomes short. 36
Hibernation(冬眠) can help animals get through the cold winter. They feed themselves on much food in fall in
preparation for a long and cold winter. Animals don’t eat when they are hibernating. 37 To spend an entire
winter, these animals enter a state called torpor(不活泼 ), where they use the white fat more slowly than they
usually do.
When in torpor, it seems that animals have been sleeping. But torpor goes much deeper than that. In fact, animals’
activities slow down in torpor. 38 An animal may take several breaths and then stop breathing for several
minutes. Instead of wasting energy to keep warm, bodies in torpor can remain just above freezing. 39 Every
week or two, they will wake up. They stay awake for a day or so before going back into torpor. The time is
different in different species. What causes the wake-up or why it happens is unclear. However, all true hibernating
animals go through this cycle.
In order to wake up during the hibernation, these animals have to warm their bodies. 40 This process burns
up white fat. And not only on hibernating animals, the warming process has the same influence also on humans,
Ballinger explains.
A. But hibernating animals don’t stay asleep all winter long.
B. If so, they will suffer from hunger during the winter.
C. Their heart may beat only a few times each minute.
D. Instead, they burn their white fat to keep their bodies running.
E. They might feel comfortable when they wake up after a long winter.
F. Then the body burns it for energy to stay alive until more food shows up.
G. That means going from a temperature above freezing to their usual body temperature.

As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and hearing his
wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd jobs when he was young and
wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.
As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa’s stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost
their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living
room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.
When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what doctors
called dementia( 痴呆 ), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Following the doctor’s directions, we
moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly
came to our house.
One weekend before my grandpa’s birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-
looking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him.
He couldn’t express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I
used to be a little boy.
It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which
my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball with grandpa cheering us on twenty
years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical
condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I presented the photo to
my grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly, grandpa could speak out the
name of every player. I even caught a soft light in grandpa’s eyes and a smile on his lips.

A bright idea for grandpa’s birthday came to my mind. “Why not give grandpa a
surprise ” I said to myself. I immediately got down to carrying out my plan. Luckily, I
contacted all the players in the photo. To my great delight, they were greatly touched by the
plan and all agreed to join in. To make the scene real, I even managed to find all the
basketball jerseys, equipment and arrange for a similar-looking basketball court. The big day
finally came. After wheeling my grandpa to the court, we began the special game. While
playing, I kept an eye on grandpa, waiting for something deep down.
Seeing “the same players” playing there, grandpa seemed to have thought of
something. Glancing at grandpa again, I found him cheering us on just like 20 years before.
Sitting in the warm sunlight, he cheered and clapped, with a bigger smile. For a while, my
mind seemed to flash back to those beautiful days. Indeed, my plan somewhat worked. I was
overjoyed that I could do something to delight Grandpa, an important person in my 1ife. I was
not sure whether this birthday would stick in his mind, but one thing was certain: it’d
definitely stick in mine.
