English Poetry
Poetry by Eleanor Farjeon
What is Poetry Who knows
Not a rose, but the scent of the rose;
Not the sky, but the light in the sky;
Not the fly, but the gleam of the fly;
Not the sea, but the sound of the sea;
Not myself, but what makes me
See , hear, and feel something that prose
Cannot: and what is it, who knows

What is poetry
Aristotle: “Poetry tends to express the universal”.
Poetry is everywhere around us. It could be nature:
A host of, of golden daffodils/Beside the lake, beneath the trees/Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. (I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, William Wordsworth)
O wild West Wind, thou breath of Autumn’s being/…Are driven, like ghosts from an enchanter fleeting. (Ode to the West Wind, Percy Bysshe Shelley)
The fog comes/on little cat feet. (Fog, Carl Sandburg)
Poetry is everywhere around us. It could be love:
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor/Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind. (To Autumn, John Keats)
She walks in beauty, like the night/Of cloudless climes and starry skies. (She Walks in Beauty, Byron)
When you are old and grey and full of sleep/And nodding by the fire (When You Are Old, Yeats)
Poetry is everywhere around us. It could be life and death:
The day what belongs to the day-at night/the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,/Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs. ( I Hear America Singing, Walt Whitman)
Tell me not, in mournful numbers, /Life is but an empty dream! (A Psalm of Life, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)
Poetry is everywhere around us. It could be joys and tears:
Break, break, break, At the foot of thy crags, O Sea!
But the tender grace of a day that is dead
Will never come back to me.
A poet can not but be gay, in such a jocund company.

What is poetry
Poetry has been called the art of 'saying the unsayable' and undoubtedly some poems can seem to create meanings and emotions that seem well beyond the words on the page.
Poetry is If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know it is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that it is poetry (Emily Dickinson).
Poetic flavor

is always there waiting to be discovered.
is spiritual, within life yet, above life.
